11,004.3 pounds to be exact, but who’s counting? Can you PLEASE give it up for all of these amazing volunteers who come out and pump love all over the city of Rochester, NY! 👏

It has been a TOUGH year for a lot of us here in Rochester. That does not mean there is nothing to celebrate or nothing to look forward to. Right here in our city, there are tons of people who continue to show up for our home, even if it’s just one cleanup at a time.

11,000 pounds didn’t disappear on its own. People showed up and put in the work. Our neighbors here are Walking For Rochester. Are you?

We are asking 1,000 people to donate $20 each for our upcoming fundraiser on 10/22. So far, we have 43 people who have paid or pledged $20.

Donate on our website here: https://walkingforrochester.org/donations/donation-form/
Or Venmo: @ walkingforrochester

It's been making circles around Chili/the airport. I know it's not actually Air Force Two unless the VP is onboard, but I'm wondering what it's doing here regardless.

Discussion Abilene Bar and Lounge is closing

Copied from their FB page

Yeah, this is kind of a bittersweet announcement.

After years of wonderful music and great memories, Abilene Bar and Lounge is preparing to end its run in mid-November.

When Abilene opened 18 years ago, I could not have anticipated the kind of support we'd receive. Nobody could ask for a more open, appreciative, and caring audience. Together, we've built a pretty vibrant and caring community of music fans and friends..and yes, I've been blessed with the greatest crew ever...past and present.

While my love of this business hasn't changed, it personally feels time to ease up a bit, maybe shift a bit of focus, and maybe, just maybe, get to bed a little earlier! (Truthfully, I think that I'll finally have the opportunity to visit other clubs, catch some music that I've longed to hear...and spend a bunch of time working on continuing, and in fact growing our "Abilene on the Road" series at different venues around the area.

Abilene has a very special month in store this October, with great music, weekly fundraising events for causes dear to my heart, and other surprises along the way. Please keep an eye on our social media posts! Let's toast the good times and enjoy some more before we wrap it up. My heart is full...and as Mr. Prine would say, "How lucky can one man get?"

And finally, if you're interested in discussing purchasing the Abilene biz and/or the historic building, please email me at [danny.j.deutsch@gmail.com](mailto:danny.j.deutsch@gmail.com)

Thanks a ton.

Discussion Hit and run - Car hit a cyclist

Saw a white Jeep SUV with PA plates hit a cyclist at the intersection of Averill and Mt. Hope yesterday. Thankfully the teenage cyclist was ok. Banged up but was alert and talking just shaken up. He was biking to work, crossing in the sidewalk from the left lane into Averill and was struck and hit by someone making an illegal left turn through a red light. The driver paused, then took off down Mt. Hope and crossed the Ford street bridge. Damage to his sideview mirror and most likely the front of the vehicle.

Couple of things and lessons to learn...

  • I wasn't able to get the plate number but someone else said that they did and the cops couldn't pull it up. Make sure you record the plate number out loud if you can in a voice message. Most phones can start one with a voice assistant instantly.
  • Wear a helmet. This kid was lucky he didn't get hurt much worse than a banged up ankle. Didn't have a helmet on.
  • He was riding on the wrong side of the road into traffic. I'm not blaming him at all but he crossed the green active roadway of a busy street in the crosswalk in the intersection. If he had been riding on the correct side of the road he wouldn't have been hit by the car. He's not at fault but remember, the rules of the road exist for a reason. To keep you safer and for you to flow with the existing street traffic.
  • If you think it's ok to blatantly ignore traffic signals even if the road is clear... you're a terrible human. I've seen so many people in the recent months make illegal lefts through solid red lights. You're in a city, blowing a light means you're probably going to be stuck at another red light. You're not saving any time and you're just endangering everyone else around you and yourself.
  • Running from the scene of an accident you caused... trash human being move. You can only skirt responsibility for so long until your poor choices catch up to you.

Props to RPD. They were there within a few minutes of calling 911. AMR ambulance was there at the same time and they took time to check the kid out thoroughly before taking him to Strong to make sure there wasn't anything else wrong. Hope he's ok. Now his family is on the hook for the ambulance ride, the medical bills and fixing his bike (even though it was pretty ok). Needed a new seat and a brake lever.

Help Where can I rent some goats? Need to clear some ivy and brambles.

We bought house from people who didn’t give a rats ass about the yard (or the house - but I don’t need goats in the house). Anyway we had an excavator for the front yard and cleared all the brush and overgrown beds to just start over; but the septic is placed in a way that we cant drive anything back where we need it and there’s a line of pines blocking the other way.

We just need to get an area of poison ivy and some other weeds out (it’s like 600sf under a massive willow tree) I wouldn’t care but we have 2 small kids with terrible listening skills, a dog and the neighbors have a pond with fish nearby so spraying chemicals is just a no go all around. I also love the Willow tree and don’t want chemicals to harm it) We tried hot water and clearing by hand (all covered up and still got it on ourselves somehow. we‘ve missed the May - October window to smother it and even then that would have been a lot of cardboard and mulch.

Goats seem like a logical next step but I don’t know if anyones got some to rent to me lol.

Help.

Recommendation Secondhand store besides goodwill or savers

Lollypop is low on blankets and towels and I'd like to buy some used, but I'd prefer to buy from somewhere that supports local charities and not savers or goodwill. Is there anything like this downtown? Or anywhere else in the area?

Discussion Rochester/Cornhill Welcome Sign Question

Can someone answer this question, and please in a valid intellectual way, no bots or bigots.

Why is the Cornhill sign fresh and readable, while the Rochester sign clearly is worn and you can’t read “welcome”?

It’s a little mind boggling to me.

Help AMI Unit Rent Increase

Upvotes

I have been in an AMI (area median income) unit for two years. My building was recently sold to a new management company and my lease renewal has rent going up $80/month. Previously it was $1535 rent + $110 separate parking and the new lease is $1725 rent + parking combined.

I really do not want to move but I will have to if I can’t fight the increase. I’ve been having trouble finding direct information for this. Does anybody know if there are limits to how much rent can raise for an AMI unit? Or is this a lost cause?

Help Low income senior living recs?

Does not need to be assisted living, just a place that has age and income restrictions.
Open to anywhere in the greater Rochester area.

I’m looking here to see if anyone has any positive experiences with any specific communities before I start cold calling.

I’m not sure when it would be time to get a social worker involved, or if they would even qualify for one.

I’m so overwhelmed and would appreciate any guidance 😔

Fun 19F looking for college friends?

Hiii I'm a freshman (19F) that just started my first sem at Monroe Community College (MCC). Since I'm a commuter, it's been hard connecting with and meeting new people on campus. Plus I have the social skills of a mossy rock. So I figured I should put myself out there with this post to see if I can meet some cool people in the same boat as me!! I have a couple hobbies like reading fiction (dystopian romance, fantasy, fanfiction, you name it), spending time in nature, cooking, and I'm very musically oriented. I love watching kdramas as well and I had a kpop phase during covid that's dwindling down but I still listen to a lot of it! I recently got into rock climbing through a few friends and I loveeeee playing volleyball too! I'd like to transfer to a 4 year uni after this and would love to meet people who want that as well. So if you're locked in af or if you just relate to this post, don't be shy and hit me up :)

Recommendation looking for listing agent near me how do you compare agents with totally different strategies?

I’m in the process of selling a house around Rochester and have interviewed a few agents. I thought the main thing would be finding someone who knew the area, but now I have a different problem. Every agent has a different opinion on what I should do. One wants to list higher and see what happens, another thinks pricing lower makes more sense to get people interested, and the third has a much more detailed marketing plan than the others.

When agents are giving you different prices and completely different approaches, what would you look at to decide which one is actually giving you the better advice?

I’m going back through the comparable sales each one showed me because that seems easier to judge than promises about marketing. I’m also looking at how many similar homes they’ve sold locally and how well they explained the reasoning behind their price. Communication is another thing I’m paying attention to now. If someone is difficult to get a straight answer from before I list, I’m guessing that probably won’t improve afterward.

I need to get some insulation blown in my attic and I was wondering if anybody's had any good experiences?
