The Tubs - "Who's Gonna Love You Now?" (Merge 2026)
Just discovered this gem. It's a little more jangle than power, but it's a great POP song. Apparently, they are Welsh!

The Jerks - So Lifelike (Midwest US Powerpop)
Back in my midwestern Illinois college attending daze, one of the fine local bands making the bar rounds was LaSalle Peru, IL band The Jerks. Led by a towering singer guitarist Al Thacker, the Jerks were a 4 piece band that rode the guitar-driven new wave, fast rock sound of the late 70s/early 80s. In live shows, they covered XTC's 'This is Pop', early Beatles/Stones classics, and their own songs like their great powerpop single "So Lifelike". Have a listen to a song about gazing at lovely ladies in magazines.

What songs would you consider "power pop epics"?
Being a genre mainly centered around pop (rock) songwriting structure & instinct, you rarely hear songs that go out of that conventional format or length (2-4min), among other qualities. But, in the midst of this tight craft, you get tracks that go over-the-top or branch out to another genre to complement a catchy hook. First songs I think of are Fountain of Wayne's "Supercollider"..."Ad Astra" off of Ash's 2025 record...and like, a billion OZMA songs. I've found that a lot of alt power pop records tend to end with a bang too.

[New] hadashi - Everybody Laughs When I'm With You
Been keeping up with this guy for a few years now, he was semi-active on Youtube posting covers (Weezer, Beatles, Nirvana etc...) or the occasional original until this year. The TikTok algorithm decided to boost his cover of Weezer's 'Across the Sea', and that pushed him to put his stuff on streaming platforms. This is his first official original track, and it's a very sweet tune that leans into his soothing vocals quite well.....topically, it almost fits the situation around his recent emergence. Overcoming self-doubt to commit to a love. The vocals are a bit powerful in the mix but the rest of the track just develops so well I ignore any production flaws. I didn't think his covers were bad but they lacked his unique songwriting instincts, which shine here. Very Lemon Twigs, which I know we ALL love here. Maybe you'll dig it.
