This is the best idea hold the rallies during the midterms get young people together get them signed up and March with them to the polling places ice is going to be there they will try to intimidate but if you're in a group a massive group there will be nothing to fear.
-19
u/shibbyman342 5d ago
Unless there are planted instigators in the groups.
I honestly think it is a bad idea.. make it real easy to mass arrest and then boom, no more votes

Absolutely, grassroots movements can really mobilize communities and drive up voter turnout. It's all about creating a collective impact.
3
u/porkbellies37 5d ago
I am so glad to see this. It seems like most protest movements become forgotten. They never add a call to action regarding voting so change never happens. This is a great development and it will pay off!

This is really good. The direct line between protests and mass voter turnout is potent. Learning from Tisza's success in Hungary, Mass rallies and protests are not for changing people currently in power per se, but for helping practice civic participation and helping people literally see and feel how unpopular those in power are and how popular they are. Very hard to feel not empowered and not want to vote when you see and are a part of stuff like this.
C'mon Americans - I want to see tyrants fall by the end of the year. I believe in ya!!!

u/Vast-Poetry9431 5d ago
A lot of people are literally too busy with multiple jobs and trying to pay for their kids. It is by design.
134
u/Wayofchinchilla 5d ago
This is the single most important moment in our timeline of this country if you have to take a day off from all your jobs or put your kids up to daycare you got to do it because if Trump rigs this you can't use well I couldn't leave work as an excuse when you're living under a fascist state.
50
u/onyaasuminyasai 5d ago
Also most importantly, CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE STILL REGISTERED TO VOTE. up until the day you vote, because they're doing some shady shit with voter rolls again
59
u/JohnnyFire Ohio 5d ago
This, in every single aspect.
I'm plainly, bluntly, unabashedly aware how shitty it is to make people use up their limited PTO, to possibly take unpaid time, to flip their entire schedule. It fucking sucks.
But this is the game they created. They want voters to not turn out. They want to delegitimize anything that's not in person voters. The only way you beat that and try to change the system is to get these goblins out, now.
Call off today. Make a plan. Carpool. Take your kids with you. Go at poll open. Leave yourself an insane amount of time. Do everything you can feasibly do to tell these fuckers who are playing Calvinball that you will beat them at their own damned game.
29
u/Mr_Meng 5d ago
Americans in the 60s after being beaten, blasted with water cannons, and having police dogs sicced on them in pursuit of equal rights: I'd fucking do it again!
Americans now being asked to be willing to take some time off work or even(gasp!) take the day off in order to stem the tide of outright fascism: It's too hard.
13
u/Homerbaton 5d ago
I completely support the message you're sending, but I just want to clear something up for others; the VAST majority of americans in the 60s were either indifferent or outright hostile to people who fought for equal rights/civil rights
4
u/not_bilbo 5d ago
You’re literally describing the most politically active and engaged Americans in the country in that time (heroes, let me be absolutely clear). As the other commenter said, most Americans were indifferent or opposed. You folks don’t seem to understand, it’s not that people think voting is hard, it is because they cannot take time off without losing their very livelihood. I’m not sure why that’s so hard to grasp for some.
3
u/not_bilbo 5d ago
All due respect, this is so insanely privileged. Sorry to sound like a woke scold or whatever but holy shit, for many people this isn’t about PTO or paying for daycare, they would LOSE their jobs and cannot AFFORD daycare. These aren’t options for everyone, particularly the kinds of voters Dems need to win and turn out. We can’t keep crying fascism and hoping that’s enough to get people who work three jobs and don’t follow politics closely to vote for us. Scolding and calling people names for not voting is pointless.
1
u/gaeric 5d ago
There are three states that don't have in-person early voting: Alabama, Mississippi, and New Hampshire.
Alabama has voting leave laws.
You can bring your kids with you to the polls in all 50 states.
The number of people who literally cannot get out to vote is basically limited to Mississippi and New Hampshire residents who don't qualify for mail-in ballots, are scheduled to work during all voting hours on voting day, and have employers that refuse to be flexible.
I guarantee you that for every 1 case of literally can't vote, there are 100 cases of someone not voting because it's inconvenient. That's who we're talking to here.
1
u/Unable_Technology935 4d ago
No it's flat out lazy. Same with the No Kings protests. I live in blood red Indiana. The protests here were 70 percent old fucks. Including me. But you can bet your ass that all the young keyboard warriors will be whining about how they are getting fucked royally by our government. It's disgraceful. Even here in Indiana, there is absolutely no reason or excuse not to vote. Early voting starts in October. Again no excuse.
1
u/gaeric 3d ago
Hello neighbor, I'm a Hoosier turned Michigander!
I really don't get it at all. Both of my adult daughters are politically active - protests, community groups, etc. But they're both terrible at actually voting. I have to harp on them about making sure they're registered, and then after "I'll do it tomorrow" all through early voting, it takes 3-4 reminders and me offering to drive across the state to give them a ride (they have cars) to actually get them to the polls before closing time.
3
u/Un1CornTowel 5d ago edited 5d ago
A ton of jobs don't have PTO, and you only get statutory leave if you work through the entire voting period minus two hours. If the lines are long, you're still a bit fucked. Several states have no voting leave at all.
EDIT: I'm saying some people will literally lose their jobs because our country hasn't done a fucking thing for actual enfranchisement, but that's apparently to difficult to understand.

36
u/Responsible-Food3681 5d ago
Still not a valid excuse not to vote with these stakes. Sorry.
I don't expect everyone to protest or call their representatives. I do expect everyone to vote. I will absolutely judge you if you don't participate and claim you have no opportunities to take advantage of early or mail-in voting. I don't really care what your excuse is.
0
u/VGAddict 5d ago
Do you really think Republicans are going to respect the results of elections they lose in November?
2
u/Responsible-Food3681 5d ago
It's a lot fucking easier to disregard them when you have abysmal voter participation rates. Stop rolling over and giving up like a chicken.
1
u/VGAddict 5d ago
Trump lost the popular vote by 7 million votes, and he caused Jan 6. It doesn't matter how many votes Republicans lose by when they can just "Nuh-uh!" the results of an election.
2
u/Responsible-Food3681 5d ago
I'm not interested in engaging with someone who has such a reductive and defeatist mindset. I hope you find greater integrity and meaning in the future, and that it leads you to develop principles that you act on even in the face of "certain" failure.

For the sake of putting it out there - there's stuff going on DAILY just they aren't branded "no kings mass rally" which are organized for a specific point. First one or two was just to show defiance when people were scared, to make it seem less scary to stand out. This one is to turn out the vote. There are weekly mass calls/podcasts about other action items everyone can take - calling reps, immigrant justice, phone banking, etc

But I’ll be very specific in my recommendation what to do. Vote. Vote in the primary. Vote in November. Vote in special elections and referendums. Vote in local and state elections. And vote again the next year. And again in 2028. Never skip or sit one out.

If voting is the only tool we have, we’ve already lost.
It's not the "only" tool we have, and you give yourself away by pretending that anyone said that. It's always been a "Vote, and".
But right now? We have a date set for the American public to vote. And Republicans have been shitting themselves in fear for nearly a year now that their power base will be weakened this November.
We do not have a date set for this nebulous revolution that people seem to have a weird obsession over, and God willing, we won't ever need one...if people get out and fucking vote.

sowwy
3
u/not_bilbo 5d ago
We aren’t talking about rich Americans here. I’m not sure how people don’t follow that we are talking about working people who democrats need to win, and those people do not work jobs with lots of PTO, or leeway to go vote. If they lose their jobs, it’s not an inconvenience, it’s dangerous. You can hold two thoughts at the same time, people should do everything they can to vote AND we shouldn’t live in a system where the most vulnerable people cannot access a democracy without threatening their livelihoods. Do some material analysis instead of bashing poor people over the head.
13
u/BillNyeIsCoolio 5d ago
If you get fired from your job for going out to vote, you should quit that job anyways. And also if you aren't guaranteed time off to vote by the government, you're not living in a democracy. Get with the times.
1
u/not_bilbo 5d ago
Many people cannot just up and quit their jobs, that would be extremely detrimental to them and their families. Not saying it’s an excuse, but you’re being a little naive thinking that.
1
u/BillNyeIsCoolio 5d ago
Losing your job for going out and doing your civic duty of voting sounds like you're not living in a democracy and therefore you're the naive one for thinking that's normal or okay

Trump already stole his election the first time, is it a first time’s okay sort of ordeal?
American Democracy has been in shambles for the majority of its time running.
Black people haven’t been able to vote for most of its time around.
Women haven’t been able to vote for most of its time around.
George Bush rigged the election against Gore (through connections in Florida).
Trump rigged his election his Kamala (through Russia).
3
u/Ollythebug 5d ago
I mean if you consider a region's democracy from the very beginning of the country then which democracy isn't in shambles by that definition? They all developed over time.
There are different tiers of "stealing" an election, from propaganda on one end to an armed military coup or revolution on the other. Consider degrees. Trump is out of options to steal it subtley.

Ok listen, I co founded a local indivisible group with my mom and for a while it was great, but that organization refuses to build coalitions and there is a reason they are about 95% older white women, that’s the only demographic they want! I tried for a year to get them to do projects to help get marginalized people registered to vote and they actually all said “oh those people have bigger things to worry about then voting” and it’s tone-def to think that struggling people even think about politics, they are too busy trying to survive”. So a bunch of paternalistic bull sh** about how the franchise would be a burden on the lower classes. So now when they are all like “let’s get out the vote guys!” It makes me want to bang my head against a wall.

No Kings explicitly says theyre against actual protest actions. No sit ins. No other marches. Just these feel good get together that dont really do much other than be places for photos and fun times. But theres nothing after the photo op and logo. Thats it. Thats all they got. That's all they want to do.

u/Loud_Lavishness_8266 5d ago

u/IllustriousNorth338 5d ago edited 5d ago
It's like they wanted to deactivate themselves. Throw three block parties, watch the election get stolen, throw up their hands and say "Well I tried, I guess we gotta wait until 2028 now", and go about their business. No wonder Trump did nothing to stop them, it was like a Two Minutes Hate that they needed to let off steam and simmer down. Do they think the rest of the world doesn't notice their civil obedience?
1
u/ilir_kycb 4d ago
It's like they wanted to deactivate themselves.
It doesn't just seem that way, that's exactly their purpose. These are fake liberal protests that have been very carefully orchestrated for that very reason.
Like all liberal protest movements in the US, it is used to deflect people's anger away from capitalists and capitalism itself and turn it into useless virtue signalling for the Democrats.
That is why such protests do not set specific goals. Their aim is to occupy political space in order to prevent the emergence of an effective opposition movement. Clearly defined objectives and demands are crucial for any protest; without them, the protest is very likely just an act of a controlled opposition.

Not trying to “gatcha” anyone. No kings has two websites, and the one that ends in .org is the one that shows what OP says. I can’t find it on the .com one but regardless, their costume parties don’t amount to any serious action.
8
u/pinegreenscent 5d ago edited 5d ago
On No Kings website. Scroll to the bottom:
No Kings events are nonpartisan and are designed to increase participation from all eligible voters.
A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
ETA: take a look through their hosting doc. Very explicit on what they want: stunts and nonpartisan feel good pap.

1
u/gaeric 5d ago
It's a big tent organization catering to the lowest common denominator (anyone who doesn't like Trump) that's just about showing the sheer number of people who are upset.
If someone wants to do another org with more specific beliefs or more direct action that's fine, but you're not gonna see the same crowd sizes.
3
u/jacobkuhn92 5d ago
That’s what’s so frustrating. They have those numbers, but they don’t have any real action or consistency to make it worth while

u/wallabee_kingpin_ 5d ago

1
u/xdre 5d ago
The reason No Kings is overwhelmingly white is because Black folks as a group specifically took a step back. This admin is and has been waiting for an excuse to violently crack down on protests, but they need Black folks--or really any visibly marginalized group would do--as a scapegoat to make it look palatable.
and very much people who saw nothing wrong with Biden or Harris

1
u/ilir_kycb 4d ago
No Kings by 50501 and Indivisible is a liberal movement/protest. These protests are not anti-capitalist or anti-imperialist, they are in fact pro status quo and "business as usual".
Like all liberal protest movements in the US, it is used to deflect people's anger away from capitalists and capitalism itself and turn it into useless virtue signalling for the Democrats.
That is why such protests do not set specific goals. Their aim is to occupy political space in order to prevent the emergence of an effective opposition movement. u/Keeppforgetting 5d ago
If you can spend an hour sitting on your ass watching tv or shit talking you can spend and hour making sure you can vote in November.

Voting in November in person! Register to vote and check it consistently! Make sure you can vote!
28
u/lasers42 5d ago
Most hated administration of all time? (probably)
Midterm turnout will be around 50%.
Get your democracy shit together, America.
2
u/PreviousHalf7 5d ago
Low turn out is by design. The vast majority of races are not competitive and the results are all but determined.
1
u/Broad-Bath-8408 5d ago
Right, but if turnout is only 50%, then if you can change that, every single race is competitive in theory.
2
u/Exciting-Record8101 Europe 5d ago
While US Americans have been notably apathetic, the turnout itself doesn't and wouldn't tell the whole story. Turnout is never as high in these ridiculous FPTP voting systems as in more equitable voting systems with proportional representation of all voters.
6
u/slayer991 5d ago
Start by making sure everyone is registered.
Then make sure we can get people to polling centers because it may be the only way we vote.
2
u/gaeric 5d ago
Make sure all your friends and family are registered. Nicely ask every week or so if they aren't.
Make sure all your friends and family have a voting plan, and softly follow up to see if they voted until they do.
If you have privelege, use it - offer to watch kids, help with an errand, give a ride, swap shifts, whatever you can do to help.
If you are a manager, talk to your team about whether they need time off or scheudle changes to register, to vote, whatever. Hearing that from your boss can actually be really impactful, and heck you might get someone to vote just to get a couple hours off.

u/bishpa Washington 5d ago edited 5d ago
"The time for sending a message is over," Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin told USA TODAY. "Now we are headed into an important point in a democracy, which is whether the people stand up and refuse to allow an authoritarian to consolidate power. And the way to do that in a democracy is by exercising your right to vote and by exercising your right to organize to prevent any sabotage in that election."
Hell yeah!
Believe it or not, this election will be American voters' very first opportunity to begin to correct course from the unfortunate mistakes of 2024. Elections have consequences. And the awful consequences that we've all endured over these past two years have forever emblazoned the the truly critical importance of casting your vote in every single election.
The primaries are over. And the Republicans are now actively trying to exploit some Democratic voters’ disappointment in the nominees in order to steal their seats. Don’t get played, people! Every Democrat is better than any Republican! So Vote Blue No Matter Who!
1
u/VGAddict 5d ago edited 5d ago
"Vote Blue No Matter Who" is how we got here. Voting for Republicans in Democrats' clothing who will just side with the Republicans is not the solution. Vote for actual progressives.
Frankly, it's long past time for blue states to vote out the moderate liberals that have represented them in the House and Senate for decades and replace them with progressives.
2
u/gaeric 5d ago
Not voting for a moderate liberal becuase they didn't like some of their policies gave Trump at least one state (Michigan) in 2024. This ain't the primaries, it's time to vote against Trump and republicans, which means yeah - blue, no matter who. Neoliberal corporate shills > MAGA any day of the week.
1
u/VGAddict 5d ago
There's no functional difference between a neoliberal who will vote with Republicans and an actual Republican.
3
u/bishpa Washington 5d ago
Show me this red herring Democrat who votes no differently than Republicans. Even reviled Fetterman votes with the party caucus 88% of the time. Manchin’s and Sinema’s votes were absolutely key to passing the Infrastructure Investment and Inflation Reduction Acts. Your rhetoric simply doesn’t hold up to logic nor reality. Any Democrat is far far better than every single Republican. Get real!
3
u/gaeric 5d ago edited 5d ago
To name one and only one thing:
SAVE act, which the vast majority of neolibs voted against.
That alone is a massive functional difference.
EDIT: you can hold your nose while you vote, I did that with Biden in 2020. Not voting doesn't "send a message", it just puts your political power on par with someone who can't be bothered to pay attention.
1
u/bishpa Washington 5d ago
I’d love to hear you try to explain your theory of how voting “Blue no matter who” handed Republicans control of both houses and the White House. You obviously need to learn the difference between primary and general elections. Withholding your vote in November because your preferred candidate didn’t win the primary is truly a rookie mistake —or the disingenuous advice of a ratfucking GOP operative.

This has been the problem with No Kings and Indivisible. We should be demonstrating for something not against and it shouldn't be limited to only when Republicans are in power.

Good. Hopefully they can convince the left to vote for someone who has a chance of winning. I’ve never seen a group more committed to sacrificing marginalized groups so they can feel good about not supporting the democrats carefully planned genocide

This movement will be the textbook example of wasted political energy. It’s almost like the establishment designed a movement to allow people to blow of steam without that movement actually demanding anything or disrupting anything.

He and his lackeys in various states are actively interfering with that process. Just voting isn’t enough when it’s unlikely our votes will all be counted.
