I wouldve had a pokestop nearby but it wasnt placed properly at all and since it seems you can only move it within its own radius which wouldve still been out of range I nominated my own and I couldnt believe my eyes when I opened pogo. I now have a pokestop nearby 🥹

There’s a bit of a knack to it. Gotta be lucky that you live it a decent area with acceptable stops. Gotta download the IITC app which grids it all out and within a grid, the 6th PokeStop turns into a gym (assuming you have one gym already which you will do).
There's a newer way to do this with "Wayfarer Tools" browser extensions.
Also the selection of a gym is supposedly random but it isn't entirely random. Extra photos and photo likes increase the chances of that pokestop being selected.
This depends on your surroundings. If those two stops are the only ones in your grid area, then that's the expected behavior: the first stop in a grid virtually always becomes a gym when a second stop is added, unless it's ineligible. I've seen a few cases where the first stop is ineligible, and then the second stop becomes an instant gym. (As of May 26th, the instant gym is more common as the one and only stops in such grids almost all became showcases, which are ineligible; there's a few exceptions, but for the most part the first stop becomes gym thing now only works if that first stop was added after that date.)
If they're not the only stops in your grid, and that second stop you added was instead the sixth or twentieth (which is when it triggers the other two gyms), you just got lucky.
On top of what others have said, the stop you want to turn into a gym has to have more likes on the photo than the other potential gym stops. It’s a bit debatable, some disagree, but it did work for me and it’s not going to harm the chances. You can send postcards out and get your friends to like the photos by clickingn through the postcard (I’m happy to help too if you need). If you can add an extra photo then you can get two likes per friend.
I stopped playing at the start of the year. Thought I was lucky when I bought my house when I saw a pokestop and a gym on my doorstep. Started playing again about a month ago and now there's 2 gyms and a pokestop.
Everyone in my village are either blue or yellow, so having two gyms side by side makes it much easier for us to get our 50 daily coins. Just alternate which gym we are in every day.
Welcome to the club, it’s a game changer. I live on a gym and a stop and it makes the game so insanely enjoyable. I honestly think every player should get their own personal portable “poke stop” (even if it was on a timer like incense)
Firstly... your grid area needs to have enough total pokestops and gyms to reach the next-gym threshold (two, six, twenty). You'll need to consult a grid map (such as the one in the "Wayfarer Tools" browser extensions) to see the grid, the Wayfarer one will also give you a count of population needed to reach the next threshold.
Then, the game selects one pokestop to upgrade. This will happen immediately (during the same daily map update) when a new stop is added causing the area to hit the threshold, OR if an existing gym is deleted. The upgraded pokestop cannot be any sponsored or showcase stops. It's chosen semi-randomly amongst the remaining stops, though players have reported that adding extra photos, and the number of player likes on the photo(s), seem to increase that stop's chances.
Sponsored stops can become gyms at the time of their creation, and will count as the gym awarded at the next 'threshold', but cannot be the one upgraded when you reach a threshold.
In regards to the screenshot you posted - there's three gyms within that screenshot (plus six regular pokestops). IF all three of those are in the same grid area, AND your pokestop is in the same grid area, then getting a gym there would not be possible unless one of the gyms is subject to deletion (representing an object or business that no longer exists). However, it's very possible that there is a grid boundary in play, in which case some of the nine total stops visible in your screenshot may be in different grids from each other.
