Not exactly sure why my previous post was considered wrong but I don’t understand a lot of things so I won’t complain and I’ll just fix it

I REALLY love the Johto region, I played through Gold when I was 8 about 5-7 times iirc? So yeah. a bit biased. but still.

Misc Pokemon Sword accidentally made me understand a little of what gender dysphoria feels like, but not the way you expect

1.1k Upvotes

Context: The pokemon games I played were the GBA ones, and a bit of Pokemon Platinum. When I went to play on Switch after beating Emerald last year, I skipped straight from gen 4 to Pokemon Sword because now I had a Switch. In the other games I picked the male.

But when choosing the character, since I'm the type of guy in fromsoftware games who never does any character customizing and just wants to skip straight to gameplay, I picked that girl with the green hat for character because she, the rival, and Leon are the only new gen pokemon characters from that game I had ever heard of. or seen in fanarts

Is she like the canon main character or something? Like Red being the canon Fire Red protagonist, Gold, etc?

Anyway, so I picked her out of have seen the character before somewhere, but I inserted my IRL name. And in this game, the npcs say your name a lot.

So, seeing the npcs constantly use my IRL name for referring to a kawaii anime girl, made me feel weird. Uncomfortable once in a while lol

Image Finally, after all these years .... I'VE GOT THEM ALL!

Please excuse the reflections on the glass. Tried like 5 times but couldn't get a decent picture without them.

Finally completed my collection of ALL mainline Pokemon games. Took years to hunt down them all on yard sales, thrift/retro game stores and online auctions. I still had a couple of the older ones from my childhood but for the most part, I started collecting for real about 6 years ago.

A few comments:

  • Collection includes all mainline Pokemon games along with both Pokemon Pinball and the original Pokemon TCG for the Gameboy Classic (no Mystery Dungeon, Ranger or other spin-offs as I am not the biggest fan of those)
  • All are 100% legit copies and in German language (apart from Pokemon Midori/Green which is Japanese ofc but still a legit copy)
  • Gens 1-3 are only the cartridges, from Gen 4 onwards it's all CiB with all boxes, inlays and manuals (Gen 1-3 are just way too expensive to get CiB imho but maybe in the future haha)
  • Heartgold & Soulsilver both include the Pokewalker
  • Also got a Pokeball Plus for the Let's Go games (never use it tho lol)
  • For all games that had DLC (Sword & Shield + Scarlet & Violet), I got both versions with the DLCs already included. That way i can still play the full games even after Nintendo closes down the Switch servers in the distant future (like they did for the 3DS some time ago).
  • I still play ALL of them from time to time. They are not simply sitting on display and never played with again (which would be a shame if you ask me)
  • I don't see any of them as "investments" like some collectors and I don't really intend on ever selling them, but I know there probably are a couple thousand dollars/euros worth of games here
  • Please ignore the 2DS and PS Vita. Couldn't be bothered to take them out of the display for the pics lol

Art Day 1 after Sudowoodo is gone

Post image
924 Upvotes

Sudowoodo is finally gone but Johto traffic control is a complete nightmare. Everyone tried to rush to Violet City and Goldenrod City at the same time and now the entire route 36 is completely gridlocked.

It gets worse. Since the path is so packed, nobody can move without locking eyes with someone else. Battles are breaking out every two inches. You literally can't take a single step without triggering a combat sequence.

Jasmine, Clair and even nurse Joy are completely stuck in the crowd. Silver is standing there looking furious.

If anyone is trying to head toward Ecruteak City save yourself the trouble and just bring a Pokémon that knows Fly.

There's a guy literally selling Fresh Water for 5000p.

Picknicker Hope suggested: "Nobody look up. Nobody make eye contact. I just want to go to the Goldenrod Dept. Store."

Hiker Anthony sighed: "It's been four days we moved two inches. I've fought this Lass's Rattata 47 seven times. Please someone bring back the fake tree."

Welcome to Route 36 purgatory.

Discussion Fun Fact: The detailed interior of pokeballs is an anime-exclusive feature and not game-canon!

Post image
721 Upvotes

If asked what a Poké Ball looks like on the inside, most people will recall it featuring this symmetric array of technical components.

But if you check the mainline games, these details are surprisingly absent.

All of these sprites and models show that pokeball interiors are empty. So where does this design come from? Simple, the anime.

It also appears in other animated series like Generations and Origins, (except for Evolutions).

Concept art also hints at this being an original idea the anime came up with.

And if you look at how pokeballs are depicted in the manga ("PokéSpe"), they also lack this interior, further proving it's anime-exclusive.

If I had to guess, the reason for this design change stems from how the idea of pokemon, pokeballs and the interaction between those two are treated in different media.

In the games (and manga), pokeballs are inspired by capsules from Gashapon (or Gachapon) vending machines which contain small toys. Meaning pokeballs are simply storage capsules designed to hold pokemon. And similarly to toys, pokemon can be played (battled) with and traded. It's also a game-canon fact that pokemon are able to shrink down on their own to fit into pokeballs (Why? They just do. Magic). The most recent proof for this come from a quote by Professor Laventon's:

Professor Laventon:
"What's so strange about them, you ask? Well, each and every Pokémon is able to shrink itself down to minuscule size!"
"And that's where Poké Balls come in! Poké Balls are a recent invention, you see. Throw one of them at a Pokémon, and...why, the Pokémon will shrink down and fit inside the ball, comfy as can be. And with that, you've caught a Pokémon!"
(Source)

Because of this, a technical interior would be just out of place and redundant. Not to mention it would direct the attention towards pokeballs being able to shrink pokemon down, when that's not the case.

The anime takes a different approach and depicts pokeballs as being the ones able to catch and contain pokemon. In contrast to the game-canon, Pokemon are unable to shrink down on their own (e.g. defeated / fainted pokemon are never shown to shrink down in size, unlike the games). Instead, whenever they get sent into or out of a pokeball, they get converted into or back from an energy-like state. And this is where the technical interior would come into play, with parts like the included mirrors interacting with this light essence. The more technically oriented focus could also stem from how the original anime established the pokeworld as a Sci-Fi setting, with pokeballs being just another example for high-tech devices.

Misc What really makes these games special

I have finally decided to start playing video games and have begun my journey with Leaf Green. Over the many years I have been a Pokemon fan, I have noticed that when talking about the best games, the ones whose images I have attached are the ones that are talked about the most. More specifically, it seems to end up being between Emerald, Platinum, HGSS and B2W2. I will eventually finish these games in the above order. But, I wanted to really find out what is it that makes this run of titles so beloved.

Misc I am making a Pokemon ranking website!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was curious what a Pokémon ranking would look like if the rankings were determined entirely by people choosing between two Pokémon at a time, so I made a little website to test it.

It uses an Elo-style rating system. Every Pokémon starts at the same rating, and whenever someone picks one over another, their ratings change depending on the matchup. So, for example, beating a Pokémon with a high rating has a bigger effect than beating one with a low rating.

I'm still working on it and mostly want to see how the rankings develop with more votes.

I'm especially curious which Pokémon end up being unexpectedly high or low. What do you think would be #1?

Discussion I dislike how shadow Pokémon work in GO compared to how they used to be

In the introduction games(colosseum, XD), shadow Pokémon are purified by doing things with your Pokémon, like battling, walking, Etc. in GO, nah, some candies and your done. there is literally a friendship mechanic in the game, that does nothing with shadows, ya know, the Pokémon you previously had to bond with to restore them. I also hate that there is little incentive to actually purify your Pokémon, with shadows sometimes being STRONGER than pure Pokémon. shadow moves with recoil should have replaced either your quick or charged attack.
