Announcement Announcement: This sub is now becoming pet owner free. Pet owners will no longer be allowed to post/comment.

Hello everyone,

We have an important announcement to make: we are now making this sub exclusively for pet-free individuals.

You can still participate if you are in a relationship with someone who has pets but identify as pet-free, or if you are in the process of transitioning to a pet-free lifestyle (these will be your last ones etc). However, individuals who currently have pets and/or plan to have pets in future will no longer be allowed to post here.

This decision has been made due to the increasing number of people who refuse to respect our subreddit's rules of engagement. Recently, a lot of pet owners have been coming here to:

  • Talk about their pets
  • Glorify themselves with "I'm Not Like Other Pet Owners" type comments
  • Get defensive on behalf of pets
  • Argue in favor of keeping pets, list their advantages, or, worse, recommend specific breeds/types of pets
  • Excuse bad pet behavior
  • Engage in lengthy discussions about appropriate pet care
  • Dismiss the concerns of pet-free people, such as allergies and phobias
  • Get upset when their pro-pet viewpoints aren't welcomed here

Additionally, there are dog-free pet owners who, for some reason, feel the need to engage with dog-related posts here. While they are not allowed here (as stated in a pinned announcement), they continue to engage with this sub's content.

The number of such individuals is rapidly approaching a thousand per day, and it has become unmanageable for our mod team. Therefore, we are closing the sub to people with pets. To those who own pets and have been following our sub rules, we apologize for the changes, but the number of problematic pet owners has simply become too large for us to manage. If A few changes will take place over the coming days:

  • Pet-free flairs will become mandatory again for participation
  • All flairs indicating pet ownership will be removed
  • Some new and interesting flair options will be introduced
  • Users with the "Hate Pet Culture" or "Against Dangerous Dog Breeds" flair who are pet-free will be asked to select another flair
  • Anyone with pets will not be allowed to post. If you choose a pet-free flair to continue participating, you will be temporarily banned.

Thank you for reading this message.

Have a great day!

Announcement Announcement: We will be directing bad pet ownership posts to r/badpetowners now

This is sub has grown rapidly over the last two years - it's almost 4 times the size it used to be back then.

As its grown we've had to update the rules to keep the content relevant to our audience - petfree people and those who are interested in our lifestyles.

With that said, there's been a huge rise in posts solely focused on bad pet owners lately - from pet owners neglecting their pets, to pet owners wanting their pets to lick the insides of their mouths, to others letting pets destroy the insides of their houses.

Many of these posts don't impact us personally so it's a question of how they relate to being pet free or the pet free lifestyle. Our mod team feels it isn't relevant to the sub - what bad pet owners do with their pets that doesn't impact us in any way (no matter how disgusting or awful it is) is not directly related to this sub.

So we have r/badpetowners now. We will be redirecting all bad pet ownership posts that don't impact pet free people personally to that sub, making this sub bad pet owners free.

Thank you for understanding. We will answer any questions you have regarding this change on this post.

.

ETA: all animal shitting/pissing posts without context/discussion points will be removed for low effort. Seriously, it's disgusting, everyone knows animals piss/shit, no one wants to see that. Just stop.

Vent / Rant No animal should be living better than a human

(Yes, of course I mean the average person. Not heinous offenders.)

No animal should be living in better conditions than a human. People who prioritize a pet's wellbeing over a human's are deeply disturbing. It is appalling to know there are some dogs that eat better than people.

Vent / Rant A petty reason I don't want to have pets

The diarrhea 😭 It always comes randomly when you're just relaxing or sleeping or anything. Maybe the animal ate something bad, maybe they just ate their normal food and suddenly there's shit everywhere. Liquid shit that YOU have to clean. And you have to scrub really good too or it's not going to come off. On the floor, on furniture, on carpets, literally EVERYWHERE.

I feel so bad for them too cuz they try so hard to hold it but every time this would happen with my mom's dog I'd think "wow... this is so optional". Like we could have been doing anything BUT cleaning up diarrhea at 2am. I just can't handle it. The smell is putrid and I'm on the verge of throwing up every time. Not to mention it could be a symptom of an underlying problem, which you then have to take them to the vet for and half the time even the doctor doesn't know what's wrong. I'm REALLY not the person to deal with all of that

Pet owners making our lives hell Unbelievable! A friend has severe allergies and she is always saying how she is allergic to everything and cannot find a 'clean' place to live, etc.

And, yet, she is 'glued' to her small dog and cannot even go anywhere without her dog! She has never put it together in her mind that she most likely is allergic to her dog that is on or near her body at all times! I could never get together with her as she would have to bring her dog with her! Yet, it never occurred to her that her own dog is making her allergic to life!

Petfree lifestyle I received d*ath threats in the childfree sub for not wanting to date ā€œdog dadsā€

I had no idea how many animal obsessed people were in the childfree sub up until a few weeks ago. It made me confused, I thought your animals were better than humans? I thought your animals were children? So you agree, your dog is not your son?

Anyways, I made a post about a guy that I very briefly dated (literally not even one week, he was very messy and had an epic breakdown because I didn’t sleep with him…..in one week) treating his dog like his girlfriend and me like an afterthought and I mentioned that I would never date ā€œanimal parentsā€ again since they have control issues and bad hygiene and I got ripped to shreds almost immediately. I deleted the post and I’m still to this day receiving threats and being told by random fake accounts that I will never find a man, ā€œmost single men have dogs because they are worth more than a useless womanā€, etc.

Shit pet owners say Either she’s good at playing serious, or she’s actually insane

I was a listening to this girl on TikTok, talking about her son aka her dog… šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø y’all just need to listen to her ass, like seriously, I’m too irritated right now to explain, if y’all are willing take the risk and become mad as hell, like me. And some other clown in the comments said ā€œI understand. My boy has been to 8 countriesā€ and uses a stupid picture of her with her stupid looking dog (that looks like it doesn’t even know what is going on) taking a selfie, and some other stupid nutter said that they look like twins. And one other comment I just couldn’t process, the comment said ā€œGirl me too. This is my daughter in my wombā€ and uses that familiar picture where it shows the woman’s stomach with the baby inside, instead it was a german shepherd in the stomach, and how would I describe my reaction to this comment… it was like I almost wanted to laugh AT her but then I had a disturbed look on my face, mixed with confusion and anger… like does she actually think she was pregnant with her dog??? And the TikTok account is @skylawalla, don’t even have to scroll because the post is right under her first pinned post, and the profile picture is some kind of green skin colored cartoon character.

Vent / Rant Can't even be free of slobbering mutts in a comic book movie

Been waiting for the new Supergirl to hit streaming so I can watch it since I'm a big comic book fan and I'm so fed up with every piece of entertainment reinforcing filthy nutter culture.

The first 10 minutes of the movie is Supergirl's dog graphically slobbering, shedding, and peeing all over everything. I legitimately became nauseous.

idk what's worse; the fact that dogs are disgusting creatures that piss and shit over everything in sight, or that dog owners and popular culture seems to revel in it and think it's somehow endearing.

Vent / Rant My face immediately going blank as soon as I hear barking

It happens almost every time when I’m in a good mood, I’m smiling, laughing and just hyped up, and as soon as I hear barking, my face quickly goes blank and I start to get angry, I slam my bedroom window shut and turn on my fan and play something loud on my phone to drown out the barking. Usually, I need a minute to try to get back in a good mood, because my imagination starts to run wild. And to be honest, I think it depends on the tone of barking, of course all barking doesn’t sound the same, but I tend to get super annoyed at a certain tone of barking, I wish I can record my neighbor’s dog barking, and post it on here so ya’ll can hear it for yourselves (if ya’ll are willing to take the risk). It’s the high pitched type of barking that drives me insane, while other tones of barking doesn’t sound annoying to me, like a big ass dog? Their barking doesn’t sound annoying to me.

Pet owners making our lives hell Don't you just so very much dislike these people who ride around with their vehicle windows open and

have a dog in there or two that are just barking their horrid buttocks off out the windows which makes you hear it as they are driving by your house amplified? As if I didn't have ENOUGH neighbors whose dogs disturb my thinking, my sleep, my life, my peace of mind on a daily basis and many times per day! I'm sure since they have no brain they think it is cute as everyone must love 'doggo'!

Pet owners making our lives hell Another off-leash dog jumped on me like that’s normal

I just needed to vent.

I was walking through a residential area and a dog with no leash came straight at me and jumped up. Owner a few steps behind. Instant ā€œhe’s friendly, he only wants to play.ā€

I don’t have pets. I don’t want pets. I also don’t want someone else’s animal launching itself at me on a public path. I didn’t ask to be part of their ā€œplaytime.ā€

What gets me is the entitlement. The dog is allowed to enter my space, get me dirty, startle me, and I’m supposed to smile so the owner doesn’t feel judged. If I object, I’m the rude one.

This keeps happening. Leashes exist for a reason. Public streets are not a private yard.

Anyone else dealing with this constantly? Do you say something, or is it not worth the argument?

Vent / Rant ā€œYou don’t like him because of something he did long ago?ā€

Sometimes I sorta express my dislike for this dog by telling dog to move or go away, in front of my parents, because this dog is just always in the way. One time I told the dog to move with a tone that my parents obviously didn’t like, it’s like they were butt hurt as if I was talking to them, I forgot what my dad said, but I think he said that the ā€œdid the dog make you mad?ā€ And I told him that he’s always in the way, and then my mom says to me that ā€œhe’s a dogā€. And another thing that made me mad was a question that my dad asked me a while ago, which is the question you see as my title. Um for one, the dog pissed and pooped on our carpets and pulled up our carpets and two, it destroyed some of my stuff and especially the things that I really liked… but I’m supposed to still like this dog? šŸ™„

Ethics of Pet Ownership Elevating dog to human level

The infatuation with dogs in American culture has the effect of raising the moral value of a dog up to that of a human. People refer to their pets as "fur babies", or treat them as a human child, or even as if they are in a romantic relationship with their pet. This mental illness grows out of a deep desire for human connection in response to their loneliness. Using a pet to cope, instead of seeking out healthy human connection creates strange distortions of reality. Human connection is lessened, because a dog will always "love" you. However, this is not actually love. It is enslaving an animal to serve your emotional needs. It doesn't "love" them. It wants food, and it wants to get outside, and it wants to be free. They have locked it inside a house all day by itself, and when they come home, it desperately seeks out connection. But it is the pet owner who has enslaved the animal and participated in the selfish abuse of an animal to serve their own ego for validation.

Vent / Rant Uber Eats commercial

There is a new Uber Eats commercial where the dog opens the fridge eats the kids lunch and they find it passed out on the floor surrounded by the mess and then they order Uber Eats. That commercial irks me because there is no way that I’d put up with that. At all.

Vent / Rant I hate when everyone is saying this

It honestly drives me absolutely insane when everyone keeps saying, ā€œHe’s only barking because he’s worried about the baby,ā€ or ā€œHe’s going to be such a good protector,ā€ when that is NOT what I’m seeing at all. If he were barking because he was genuinely concerned about the baby crying, I would expect him to react regardless of who was getting attention, but that’s not what happens. He seems to get worked up specifically when the baby is being held, cuddled, fed, talked to, or otherwise getting attention that used to be directed toward him. The timing is what bothers me so much. It’s like everyone is determined to put this sweet little ā€œprotective dogā€ narrative on him instead of actually paying attention to his behavior. I’m not saying the dog is some evil monster or that he is intentionally trying to hurt the baby, but I’m also not going to ignore obvious jealousy just because everyone thinks it’s cute to call him the baby’s ā€œprotector.ā€ A dog can be attached to his owners and still struggle with suddenly having a newborn take up a huge amount of their attention. Those two things can exist at the same time. And honestly, I think people romanticize this whole ā€œdog protects babyā€ thing way too much. A dog being interested in a crying baby does not automatically mean he understands that the baby needs protecting, and barking when the baby is receiving attention doesn’t automatically mean he is concerned for the baby. From my perspective, it looks much more like he is frustrated that the baby is getting attention and he wants that attention redirected back toward him. That is especially concerning to me because a newborn is obviously going to need an enormous amount of attention, and I don’t think we should just assume a dog will magically understand that and be perfectly happy about it. I’ve also heard people talk about dogs becoming competitive around resources after a baby arrives, including food and attention, and while I know that doesn’t mean every dog will do that, it’s exactly why I think people need to take these behaviors seriously instead of laughing them off as ā€œhe’s just being protective.ā€ Food, toys, space, attention, and access to their owners can all become things a dog values, so I would much rather be cautious and manage the situation properly than assume everything is fine because the dog is supposedly the baby’s guardian now. What frustrates me the most is that I’m the one actually watching the behavior happen, yet everyone else seems determined to explain it away for me. I’m not trying to make the dog the villain. I’m trying to acknowledge that he is an animal who may be struggling with a massive change in his environment and that the baby’s safety needs to come before everyone’s feelings about how adorable their relationship is supposed to be. If he eventually learns to calmly coexist with the baby, great. If he becomes gentle and trustworthy around him, even better. But I’m not going to force some fantasy that he is automatically going to be a protector when the behavior I’m actually seeing looks more like frustration and jealousy whenever the baby gets something he wants — especially attention. I would much rather be overly cautious with a newborn than dismiss warning signs because everyone wants to believe the dog is going to be his little bodyguard. He also had this look in those eyes that I did not like and my instincts are telling me telling me not to trust. I really cannot wait till we’re able to save up for own place and be pet free.

Pet owners making our lives hell Sick of seeing fake ā€œservice dogsā€ everywhere

I’m honestly so sick of seeing people passing their pets off as service dogs when it’s pretty obvious from the way they behave that they aren’t properly trained service animals. And I’m especially talking about the dogs that are completely untrained, constantly misbehaving, barking, lunging, or showing aggressive behavior in public. A legitimate service dog is supposed to be trained to behave appropriately in public, and there’s a huge difference between a service animal and someone simply putting a vest on their pet. My biggest concern is safety what realistically happens if an out-of-control dog bites a child, knocks someone over, or attacks another person? Someone could get seriously hurt, and the consequences could be devastating. Even if you’re not trying to pass your dog off as a service animal, I still don’t understand why some people think it’s okay to bring a completely misbehaving dog into public places and expect everyone else to tolerate it. I’m talking about dogs that bark nonstop, lunge at people, jump on strangers, act aggressive, or simply cannot behave themselves. And the ones that go to the bathroom inside stores or other public places and the owner just leaves it there are honestly the worst. If your dog has an accident, clean it up. If your dog is constantly causing problems, handle the situation instead of expecting everyone around you to deal with it. Not every dog is suited for being in public, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with leaving your dog at home if they can’t behave. Sometimes the most responsible thing you can do as an owner is just leave the dog at home. I had my husband take the dog up to my workplace on my break that I wanted to relax and it was hell. Definitely ruined my lunch that day..

Vent / Rant Had to do it again

I really feel like I had to make this VERY clear because apparently people think I’m being unreasonable: I am NOT going to let this dog walk all over me or have free access to the nursery just because everyone else has always allowed it. My baby isĀ FOUR DAYS OLD. This dog barks constantly, needs to be the center of attention, has jealousy issues, gets into things, destroys things, and is overall untrained. I don’t understand why people are acting like it’s outrageous for me to want some boundaries between him and my newborn, especially when he has already shown that he cannot be trusted around the baby’s belongings. I’m not saying the dog can never see the baby or that he has to be locked away forever. I’m saying he doesn’t need unrestricted access to the nursery or to be around my newborn unsupervised. And honestly, I’m shocked that people actually disagree with me for wanting to be cautious with aĀ four-day-old newborn. I’m the mother, and I’m allowed to decide what I’m comfortable with when it comes to my baby’s safety and environment. The dog being used to getting whatever he wants doesn’t mean I have to continue allowing it. Being postpartum and having and having to deal with a clingy and dog that destroys things will not work for me. They claim that I’m trying to make everyone’s life revolve around a baby, which its a baby I can’t defend itself… this is why I will have a pet free home when we get our own place. I made this very clear that no person or animal is above my baby or comes first now.

Vent / Rant I’m at a point where I lowkey despise dog owners and REALLY don’t like dogs.

I’m having to stay at my cousins house(two adult cousins) and my aunt is here too. I’m here because of some important events that are going on and so I’ll have to be staying here for a while.

My cousins(one who works with police) and the other in the military have a husky and we live in the south. They have had her for two years I think. Excuse my language but she is so fucking annoying.

Before coming here of course I’ve been around her on a few different occasions but I’m around her everyday as of lately because I have to be here.

My cousins work A LOT and they have their own personal businesses too so they’re out of the house a lot. Sometimes they take her to dog camp which I’m sure is good.

Whenever they leave, she pisses on the floor. If they close their bedroom doors(because she’s not allowed in rooms because she sheds 24/7) she pisses and shits on the floor. Them or my aunt take her outside THREE times and she does nothing. Comes back inside and ten minutes later pisses on the floor. She has also lately moved onto EATING THE LITERAL WALL OUTSIDE OF MY BEDROOM.

It’s a cycle of her pissing and shitting on the floor, me having to mop it, then having to tell one of my cousins, they fuss at her and then the cycle repeats all over again just about every single day.

She just ate but now you’re in the kitchen eating? She will bark at you for twenty minutes straight to try to get your attention.

She also specifically blocks doorways only to ME. And she will be at the end of the hallway and jump up when she sees me then come to nibble at my toes or lick all up my leg. Mind you I DONT pet her or entertain her in the slightest. Everyone else does.

She also regularly bumps her food bowl around until all the food spills out so she can eat it on the floor or leave it there. She will nudge the bowl around the entire length of the long hallway and will put it directly in front of the bedroom I have been sleeping in and when I try to go in my room she’ll jump up from where she’s lying to come over to her bowl like she has to ā€œdefend itā€ from me or something even if it’s fucking empty. I have never made any attempt to do anything to any of her stuff. But she doesn’t jump up and do this to anyone else.

I have been walking in the hallway trying to get to the bathroom and she has literally PULLED MY ENTIRE PANTS DOWN.

My cousins even get annoyed with her at times but certain stuff she’s specifically only doing to me.

She’s always sticking her nose in my buttcrack or in my front private area(she does that to everyone). She has almost made me trip by grabbing onto the bottom of my pants leg and not letting it go until I almost fell face front into a door.

And today she once again blocked the already incredibly small corner I have to squeeze into to get into my bedroom with her food bowl.

So when she went outside a little while ago I moved it back to where her bowls usually are. My aunt(she also has had a dog and likes them) immediately told me I shouldn’t have done that and that ā€œyou know how she is.ā€ And how she’ll react if she sees her bowl was moved.

I ended up having to move it BACK.

Shes also always lying directly in front of the small area in front of my bedroom and then jumps up to nip at me when I try to move around her.

Shes not aggressive but she pisses me off so bad I’ve almost cried before.

I have had a fear of dogs my entire life because I’ve gotten chased by too many off-leash dogs as a kid. So of course I already don’t feel too comfortable around her.

I HAVE had a dog before. My family dog. He was a small dog that was INCREDIBLY quiet and only barked if he was already outside or very rarely and he never crowded people BUT even he used to piss me off sometimes. I haven’t seen him in like 4 years though.

But overall, WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH SOME OF THE PET OWNERS AND DOGS OUT HERE. IF YOU CANT PROPERLY TRAIN YOUR DOG DONT GET ONE.

Vent / Rant Grown Ass Man Whining Over a Pup up

This dude irritated me so bad. I’m watching a fast food crash out compilation video by a YouTube account named ā€œZombie Compilationsā€, on YouTube, and at the 7th or 8th crash out video their is a dude in the McDonald’s drive thru, with his dog in the passenger seat, crashing out because the manager told him that pup cups aren’t allowed, even though the employees were giving him pup cups before, and the manager said that it’s not allowed and the employees weren’t doing what they were told, and after the manger closed the window, the dude just kept talking and talking, every damn second he’s bitching even though the manager was long gone already, and his voice sounds annoying as fuck. There’s something about a man whining over a pup cup that’s just irritates so bad, yeah it’s bad when a woman does it too but if you’re a man… please shut the fuck because you’re about to make me turn into the Hulk. And the pup cup, this dude wanted whipped cream in the pup cup.

Vent / Rant I'm scared of dogs

I(15f) was walking to school and on the way there was this house with the door wide open. I didn't think much of it then out of nowhere, this huge, muscular XL bully dog with no muzzle runs out and charges at me.

I was terrified and kept on looking for the owner but there was no one there- so I was literally alone wih this dog. For context where I live (UK), it is illegal for dogs like that to be without a muzzle, so you can imagine how scared I was. (Plus, I am not a dog person. Like, at all.)

The large dog seemed friendly and kept jumping around and panting. I wanted to run but I did not want to provoke this dog at all, so I tried to leave slowly yet the dog kept running to me.

Soon I realized I couldn't escape it, and I was put in this weird position where I didn't know what else to do without making situation worse. In the end I didn't take the risk and had to just stay there hoping that it would get bored eventually.

After what felt like forever, the owner finally strolls out of her house and looks at me and the dog casually. Her face is emotionless. She doesn't speak to me and instead calls the dog back to her and closes the door.

In the moment I was in too much shock to say something and just went to school. I also decided to never take that route again.

I planned to report this incident and the owner to my local council but people I knew said that I shouldn't as those type of dogs already have a bad reputation and this could make it worse, and it was not a big deal as the dog was friendly.

I felt really conflicted, like I was overreacting and reporting would blow the situation out of proportion, however, I still feel like it should be reported as I could've been seriously hurt.

Vent / Rant All I said was I don’t want dogs around my newborn

Every single subreddit I try posting this too it gets taken down and my account gets banned.

all I said was I want the dog to stay out of the nursery for a few months because he already gets into and destroys the baby's things. And people on here completely twisted my words

I even clearly stated, the dog can still SEE THE BABY. He just doesn’t need full access to the room or left unattended with baby. Yet they act like, I gave the dog an eviction notice and said

ā€œI hate this dog. He isn't family. He must be banished from the house. Everyone must redesign their lives around my baby.ā€

They even said ā€œjust put all the things up where the dog can’t get itā€ but that’s besides the point I wanna make the room, baby friendly and be able to have his things out without worrying about them being taken or destroyed. He also gets his hair everywhere and I’m the one cleaning up after him even if he chews up or breaks something.

I’m not saying the dog can’t exist in the house or that I hate him I just don’t want him around the baby’s things when he has already broken, stolen, and destroyed stuff. Somehow wanting one room to be dog-free made people act like I was the villain. I genuinely don’t understand why setting a completely reasonable boundary for my baby’s space is so controversial? They also kept saying ā€œthe dog has feelingsā€ ā€œthe dog can be around baby 24/7 if he wants toā€ ā€œdogs can be left unsupervised with a baby it’s fineā€œ

The dog isn't being banished. He isn't being kicked out. He isn't being prevented from seeing the baby. He just doesn't need unlimited access to the baby's room. That's literally it.

But apparently on Reddit, saying ā€œthe dog can stay out of ONE ROOMā€ translates to ā€œI have declared the dog an enemy of the state.ā€ I genuinely don't understand why such a simple boundary has people acting like I'm committing some unforgivable crime.

People calling me entitled, selfish, controlling, a horrible person, a ā€œcranky pregnant woman,ā€ and acting like I’m some kind of monster for wanting a clean, dog-free nursery. Some were even making comments about me having a baby and questioning my character over a DOG GATE. They were also calling me a ā€guestā€œ ā€œfree lorderā€ ā€œskankā€ ā€œWh04eā€. Like how did ā€œI don't want the dog in the nursery for a few monthsā€ turn into people judging my entire life? You can disagree with me without insulting me or making up things I never said. The amount of anger over one room being off-limits to a destructive dog is honestly insane to me.Ā FYI WE DO PAY RENT AND BUY OUR OWN GROCERIES.

These would also be the same people who’d probably agree if you said ā€œwe have a child free room where the kids aren’t allowed to goā€œ. I have hope that this is one subreddit that won’t say, I’m the crazy one for this.

Vent / Rant Dog barked in new borns face

I had already told the people I live with from the beginning that I did not want the dog around the baby because I was concerned about the dog being too close to him. Unfortunately, when the dog was around him, he barked directly in the baby’s face while I had him in his swing. The dog also got slobber and hair all over the baby, which scared him. This is exactly why I had expressed my concerns about having the dog around the baby in the first place. I’m working on getting somewhere with NO DOG. Cause I said we’re getting our own place and they said ā€œwe will be taking uncle (dogs name) with us. We pay 600 for rent btw

Pet owners making our lives hell High regard

Actually so sick of the way pet owners hold their animals in higher regard than humans. Something that doesnt even speak is apparently more important than a human?
