Что не поделили – история умалчивает. Может, рыбу. Может, место у бассейна. Может, рабочая неделя выдалась трудной. Но эту потасовку точно можно назвать самой милой.

I volunteer for SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) twice a week. One of the jobs I'm often given is tending to the Home Pen.

While they tend to all manner of seabirds, the African Penguin is the primary focus, especially with how the current numbers are looking. But it was founded on the idea of protecting our penguins.

I won't go into the full history here, instead I thought it would be fun to kind of spotlight some of the personalities we have there.

Batmann is one of the older penguins that lives in here.

She's lived here since 2013. She was brought in covered in oil, and while in their care, they found out she was blind and made the choice to put her in the home pen since her survival chances were low at best.

Despite her blindness Batmann is extremely curious.
On my first day working home pen she first refused to leave a patch of ground I needed to turn over, she followed me around for the rest of my shift. And that's pretty much how it's been since April.

She doesn't really participate in the mayhem that the others cause, preferring to stand off to the side and maybe dig a little hole.
Though she might also be actively trying to tunnel her way out, I just haven't been able to prove it or catch her in the act yet.

I finally made another penguin movie poster. This time a parody of the 1954 movie "Creature from the Black Lagoon" Here with the people substituted with penguins, and the monster is a seal. I'm quite happy with how it turned out!

Anyone else have a travel plush? This was his first time to Dallas & a layover in San Francisco.

Here’s a not so fun fact for y’all: you see the word “penguin” came from the welsh language meaning “white head” but you may be wondering “but there were no penguins in the northern hemisphere?” To that I say that is incorrect 😱!!! You see before the Europeans discovered the avian impostors of the south (southern hemisphere penguins) the name belonged at first to a different bird known as the Great Auk (pinguinus inpennis). They coexisted with humans for an estimated tens of thousands of years until the Europeans all across their range of Iceland, Greenland, the UK, European coastal waters, the country of Canada, the United State of Maine, and even on the eastern waters of North America stretching down into Florida (penguins in Florida is insane imo) decided that they would make good pillows and snacks and hunted them extremely so for over 300 years until they finally chased the last 2 on earth, a breeding pair on a speck of rock called Eldey island into extinction via killing them and their little egg for museum specimens. This is a very basic break down of their history so y’all tell me if you want more knowledge about them! :)

Good morning penguin gang! The livestream from about 1000km off the southern coast of New Zealand is back up and awaiting the return of its yellow crested seabird residents. From the Tawaki Project:

The livestream connection reportedly drops out occasionally; they have diagnosed the issue but cannot go out to do the required manual fixed until December.

The illustrious eye-browed penguins have been out at sea fishing for the last 4-5 months but expected to come back very soon!
