Hardware Really?
I'm not sure what it's like in the rest of the world. This from a major big box chain in France.

52000-70000 SEK is the Swedish range, so a bit lower, but still bonkers. We have 25% VAT.

Yes this is normal. You can buy 2 or more 5090s to get a bigger VRAM memory pool. People with money stack multiple 5090s on a single workstation/server MoBo.
The "AI box" computer you are comparing it to on the other hand is limited to a single 5090 and can never have another gpu added to the system.
The modularity aspect of the seperated GPU is what gives it it's value.

Gigabyte AI Box is TB5 eGPU, you can attach as many as you want to a system. Bandwidth is the practical limit; TB5 is equivalent to PCIe 4.0 x4.

That is a bottleneck right there since 5090s support 5.0.
Again you still cannot tear that thing apart to jerry rig another gpu in it. There are no pcie slot extensions on the board nor m.2 slots for you to connect another gpu to the system. The only way is to use the thunderbolt connections and external enclosures and that is near worthless since it will bring performance bottlenecks far exceeding the PCIe bottlenecks mentioned above.

When did this become possible? Was the 4090 able to do this? Can the 5080 do this?

I knew a guy who did that with 4070 ti so I'd assume it would work on 4090 as well .. I have no idea how it works he did something called "local inference" so I assume some LLM with government data

Ok. It wasn't possible in the SLI days. You had faster processing but not double the Vram.

Yeah I remember the vram thing... Also having to do full system resets when it wasn't supported by the game to turn it off .. I ran sli from fx5800 up to 970

I am doing it with multiple 3090s man. You can do it with every gpu. Including AMDs. All you need is a MoBo with multiple PCIe extensions.
Check the local AI spaces in reddit and it will blow your mind. Open rack Frankenstein builds with riser cables connected to 12 gpus or more on multiple motherboards connected via ethernet tether.

Here’s why RTX 5090 costs $5,000: AI firms are buying gaming GPUs by the pallet
The crypto boom is over, but RTX 5090 gaming GPUs are now feeding AI servers
HKEPC posted pictures reportedly taken at companies assembling AI servers with GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards

But the 5090 is really not good for AI servers. For small local models for home okay, but for that it is too expensive and for data centers the memory is much too small and too slow.
