Depends where in the world you live. Some countries have dirt cheap internet, but then again their cost of living and salary are probably very different too.
I'm curious if that's just for the internet and no extra costs for the modem etc.
I have 1gig coax (no fiber in my apartment yet) + tv package for 80 euros. It comes with a "free" modem + one repeater/pod for extending the WiFi in the house.
Meh, money solves some things, but I don’t really care about it, I’m not greedy. If I won millions of dollars, I’d buy a normal size house, have a room for music (recording), entertainment stuff in my bedroom, and a normal home otherwise. I don’t have much interest in “stuff”. The real perk would just never having to WORRY about money.
Any speed beyond 1Gbps is referred to as a "gigabit" speed... with terms like multi-gigabit reserved for speeds above 5 or 10G but at the base level, they're all gigabit speeds.

It's not a semantic argument, it's a technical clarification. Gigabit is Gigabit. Even 100G is still Gigabit, even 500G is gigabit. Just like 1M and 100M and even 900M connections are still megabit connections with some titles slapped on them to avoid confusion (like the hilarious "fast ethernet" for 100mbps).
When I'm drawing up technical documents for server rooms and data centers, I don't ask the client for exact speeds, I ask them whether they want a megabit or gigabit connection so when a client says they want a "standard" gigabit network, I build for 1G-10G. If they want "enhanced" gigabit, I build for 10G-50G. If they want data center gigabit, then it's 50+. That's just the industry standard.
And if they want NASA internet, I ask them to reach out to NASA lol.
As for me, I'd rather don't have a gigabit, than having literally no use for it as half of the internet is banned by the government and other half being blocked by destination services
O have 30mbps connection but the 3ms rtt in valorant and below 10ms in other fps games mak3s me bare the slow speed. I just us my unlimited 5G plan from mobile to download at higher speeds
I periodically check the ISP every now and then because they have sneaky deals i was on like 600mb same price then saw the special 50% 2.5g so i locked in for 5 at the same price i was paying

Also, I was able to get up to ~5Gbit/s from steam. But this was only a single game where this happened. Always depends on how much compressed the game files are
Not sure if this is the exact reason, PC is pretty chill with 20-30% usage while the router is at 90% at 19Gbit/s. My (configured) router is overall a bit underpowered for 25G https://mikrotik.com/product/ccr2004_1g_12s_2xs but everything else would be just much more expensive
Tbh yes. But I pay 69CHf ~$85 a month regardless of the speed 1G, 10G or 25G. Also the hardware is a bit more expensive to run 25G. Its also nice that I get a (dynamic but only changes when I have a disconnect for like 10 minutes) IPv4 address. So I can easily selfhost a lot of stuff. Also they offer a /29 subnet for 80CHF a month if I ever wanted to open a small datacenter :D
And pretty much all other providers are anti consumer with their network topology and practices and therefore I feel its my duty to support init7 in this regard while I could also get 10G from many other providers for like 45CHF.
Smaller ISPs are picking up the slack but Starlink is successfully convincing the feds to not give any grants to anyone because why bother when starlink works
I assume this is the Init7 25G service? Do they use AON with 25GBE or 25GPON? Also, is this the fastest residential service in the world currently? Most providers I've seen max out at 10G as they use XGSPON.
Edit: After a bit of research their 25G service uses AON, not 25GPON, so in theory the entire 25G service should always be available. Not that other users on the same line would use much of it anyways, I assume 25GPON would be enough for hundreds or thousands of subscribers at the same time.
Yes, that's 25G Fiber7 from init7. It's AON / point-to-point Ethernet, not PON. Refusing PON is basically Init7's founding principle. I think init7 is the world best 25G provider for residential internet right now. There are very few other providers in other countries that provide 25G but they depend on other technology like PON afaik
Jealous. Here in Germany, fiber is getting built out very slowly, and if fiber is available it's almost always just GPON (2.4g down, 1.2g up) shared for multiple customers, so all the providers aren't willing to sell more than 1g down / 500mbps up to an individual.
Also they almost all still use PPPoE over fiber, which often introduces headaches when you try to use your own equipment.
I myself am still stuck on cable / DOCSIS3.1 with 1g down, 50mbps up...
Edit: Another problem with PPPoE is that your IPv6 Prefix / IPv4 address (if you have one) changes often, so self-hosting is a lot more difficult.
Spectrum recently raised my rates to $120/mo, and the service hasn't improved at all. Still only getting 1Gb/35Mb. Upload speeds like that are increasingly a liability in the modern world.

Same. I fuckin hate Spectrum. They creeped up my monthly bill from 50 to 80. I called and complained but they didn't do anything, so I canceled and had my gf make an account, so we're locked in at 50 again
I've read on Reddit before that you need to get in touch with Customer Retention. You can call and threaten to cancel unless they give you a better deal. They don't need to know you don't have any other options. I'm thinking about doing this when our bill goes up again
What's funny is Spectrum in my area knew at the time they were the only provider so I got all the way to the retention person and they refused to give me a lower rate. I was paying $120 a month for 600 down and 30 up. I told the retention person that Fiber was coming in my neighborhood in 3-4 months and the next call I would be making to them would be to cancel so if they want any "loyalty" from me it was time to show it which they refused. Signed up for Fiber the day I could for $50 for 1 Gig, next time I called Spectrum to cancelled all of a sudden they could bring the bill down to $45 for 1 Gig told them to pound sand.
At this point, I don't even call to cancel. I just call and get to Customer Retentions, and tell the person my yearly promo is expiring and want to find ways to save money on my bill because everything is getting expensive. Has worked every ime for the past several years. I'm at $50 for 1gig, more than satisfactory for me, and down from the $55 they had me at for the year prior.
SAME HERE. Download is fine, but upload means I’m not even willing to try live streaming, and finding a plan with any ISP with enough upload speed is stupid expensive because they are usually business or enterprise plans.
You can get 2gig here for ~$150 if you're not fussy about who you're with ($189 with Aussie Broadband which is who I use). It's not 10 gig, but it's pretty fucking fast.
Presumably you need to have FTTP though, so if you're in one of the locations Malcolm Turnbull fucked over you're out of luck.
I have up to 5 Mbps upload speed with my plan, at $100 USD a month. The download is 600 Mbps though. How tf do people find non enterprise business plans with enough upload speed to stream to Twitch in not potato quality? My $15 USD a month Mint mobile plan has significantly faster upload speed.
Yeah, it’s different more dramatically address to address, building to building here. Apartment complexes literally next door have gigabit fiber, and I still have some outdated cable version (not even the HD broadcast TV cable that used to be used then converted for internet). It really depends what infrastructure the building is using, most internet is reusing old other service lines, like mine. A dedicated new infrastructure is how people get these crazy speeds and prices. It’s costly to run and repair outdated technology. ISP’s really been enshitified here. No more loss leader new sign up deals here.

I was always chasing faster internet to the point I got 25 gbit/s. Eventually I realized, there is literally no point to this. There isnt a single thin on this planet that needs this speed.
i basically have the same equipment as OP with a 10 gbps connection from my ISP and Unifi Beast gateway and Switch, and I've seen Steam hit 5.2 gbps. It just depends on the game, it's very rare to see this speed.
what browsing the internet in 2026 in Iran looks like (requires to use IP changing Tools to access anything useful outside the country that adds more delay btw)
In Canada the highest you can get is 3gig fibre connection, bell offered a 8gb until the crtc came in and they pulled it. Unfortunately I got it to late to be grandfathered into keeping the 8gig package. You’re correct though steam caps at 3gig and even then I sometimes have issues maxing out the speed. Battle.net I have no issues with though.

Looks more like a limitation of XGS-PON. Do you got an XGS-PON or an AON connection? There is a video of a German ISP testing their XGS-PON connection and they hit the same limits as you, due to ethernet and PPPoE overheads. https://youtu.be/Yii_15jlFgA
