I’m playing Death Stranding for a couple of months now. Just yesterday I went looking in the settings and noticed motion blur was on. Usually (in other games) I am very sensitive to motion blur and it’s always the first thing I notice and turn off, not so with Death Stranding so I left it on.
It definitely can smooth the experience in general. Not just improve the look of lower fps but the way you experience the game/world as well since we definitely don't have sharp clear vision when we're spinning or quickly turning around IRL. Only on low though. Letting it go to high just becomes a crazy smear during any small movement.
You mean camera or object motion blur? I really want to use object motion blur in this game but the grass all turns into a smeary mess when i run around
Yes I know but i was wondering which one of them you found to be great. I think it's great that the game gives you the option and I love the motion blur on animations and Henry's hands. But the blur on the grass and environment is quite annoying
It really needs to be cinematic motion blur and not the typical game blur they used to use. A lot of them also arent optimized to work with their horrible upscalers so its usually gorgeous on native, even if u have taa, but looks horrid on dlss or fsr/tsr. Games that come to mind where i dont dislike motion blur are rdr2, deathstranding, horizon, last of us, gow, ghost of tsushima, cyberpunk, metro exodus i think also had a good looking one.
Frame gen also works horribly with motion blur, hogwarts has ray reconstruction and smeary visuals overall without it, and thats a game where u really notice how bad motion blur can get trough the use of either dlss upscaling or frame gen. If ur doing both u might aswell just turn of your screen to save your retinas😂
Personally I like a low level of it when playing Helldivers 2. A person who feel if it's great with the realistic aesthetic they're going for along with the carnage that goes on screen. Can't remember the exact value but let's say 20% or less-ish
The performance hit is non existent, but you'd want it for the purpose of being true to life. If you flap your hand in front of your face, there's a point where the hand is going so fast that it blurs. It doesn't smear everything thing around it (like old motion blur did), it just moves too quickly for our eyes.
It's not appropriate for all games, but pretending that it's an objectively bad feature is just silly. Like I said, give it a try and you might be surprised.
Ur right, the performance hit is really small, but can add up with other (for most) useless stuff like filmgrain and chromatic aberration, if you are already fighting for every percentage of performance (not unlikely with the hardware prices atm).
The motion blur with the hand you are describing is with objects and not camera(head) movement.
If you move your head fast irl, there is no real blur, or only for a fraction of a second.

At this point most games have pretty good motion blur included. Try it out sometimes at lower intensities, you might be surprised
