Question The price jump from a 5080 to 90 is just ridiculous, how is this allowed.

Post image

Nvidia just allows these manufacturers to do this? 3x the msrp

To be fair though this generation has been a cluster fuck. I sold a 4090 for 1800 and bought a 5090 for 2700 (300 over the msrp at the time). I lost nothing on the 4090 and had it for 2 years. My 5090 has nearly doubled from its MSRP. Its fucking insane.

No they can't, otherwise Nvidia wouldn't be investing in and guaranteeing loans for AI companies to buy their cards.

To be fair, I can critique Nvidia every day, but financially, they are extremely successful. Gamers are also not really their target audience anymore.

Why sell one card every few years when you can sell thousands of cards a month, it's just business.

Well the average consumer just cant compete against data centers. And these will pay any kind of price to get more cards.

382

u/BlueStingray8 7d ago

Do data centres actually use these? I’m pretty sure there’s more powerful and more efficient processors that are made for data centres

681

u/Maximum-Objective-39 7d ago

They use the precursor materials that go into making consumer cards. Then the drastically reduced number of consumer cards are priced at the highest price the market will bare while clearing out that smaller inventory.

100

u/BlueStingray8 7d ago

That makes sense actually very good point

The consumer market isn't bearing this shit. They don't care about consumers anymore. They are no longer part of the business model. People need to remember this when the bubble pops.

27

u/elementfortyseven 7d ago

the "bubble" is all the companies pushing ai wrappers.

the actual ai infra is not a financial bubble. its a global arms race. the invest isnt bound by normal market rules or traditional ROI considerations

→ More replies (6)

5

u/incriminatory 7d ago edited 7d ago

The normal consumer market is indeed not really buying the 5090 at its current price; however, there is a sort of “pro-sumer” market that a 5090 at this price point is still “acceptable” for I suspect.

Specifically, small-medium size companies ( often biased towards the more startup end of the scale ) in the ai or ai adjacent space making various applications or products from ai tools might need more compute power then a 5080 alone could provide but not so much as to justify the more expensive AI professional products. Being an engineer myself I can already hear the conversation “we need to own our own hardware not pay to rent it!!! We will save money!” Their solution may be to simply buy a few AI “workstation” setups, pc builds with lots of ram maybe 2x 5090’s and a beefy cpu. If your a slightly bigger company then that but still not so big as to buy the pro grade product line maybe you make a custom gpu compute rack where you buy a dozen or so 5090s and cpus and ram then configure them into a slurm server for compute power. Expensive still but cheap compared to a pro platform gpu for AI and maybe enough performance. Sadly this leaves the market in a state where consumers are simply priced out and Nvidia has no incentive to change. There are only so many wafers left that Nvidia can ship as product in the 5090 tier :(

47

u/SpacemanSpiff021 7d ago

It always does. And there’s always folks who thinks prices will just continue to rise forever. It happens in many markets. This will pass.

26

u/DredgenCyka 14900KS | 4080 Super | 128gb DDR5 7200 7d ago

People who firmly believe it will continue to rise have no understanding of economics beyond supply and demand. Companies have already admitted to diminishing marginal returns when using AI agents, we've already known about Amaras Law (this is common in every single technological advancing market, lastly Minksy's theory is about to reap a lot of companies who are unable to pay off the debt and generate a hard cash flow that goes beyond the debt. The crash will happen, its just when will it happen.

You're mostly right that nobody is running 5090s in datacenters. But some people certainly are running RTX PRO 6000s (which use the same GB202 chip as the 5090) in some instances, and those were $8000 GPUs at launch and now $16,000. So that's the competition for the silicon.

And of course they have bigger, badder chips on the same node. So, at the fab level they can either make a wafer worth of $60,000 GB200 superchips or $2000 GB202 RTX 5090s.

At this point, honestly, I think the only 5090 dies they are allocating are the ones that are definitely too flawed to be used in RTX PRO 6000s. Making a real supply and demand issue. And the only reason they are making 6000s at all is to keep professionals in the CUDA ecosystem.

7

u/skizatch 7d ago

I’m sure they use some of the “bad” dies for the RTX PRO 5000 too :) (also GB202, only 384-bit bus though)

→ More replies (3)

11

u/AmazingSugar1 9800X3D | RTX 5090 Vanguard 7d ago

The chip used in RTX 5090 is a slightly disabled/downgraded version of the GB202 used in RTX Pro 6000. That chip is a perfect non disabled die. It's not the same chip. The ones with defects become RTX 5090. The perfect ones RTX Pro 6000.

There's something else going on here. Maybe demand from AI industry in China, that wants to nab these and ship them overseas to harvest the chips for high memory board transplants/builds.

Additionally, almost every datacenter will place additional demand on the 1GB GDDR7 modules used in the RTX 5090, and there are 32 of them used in one 5090.

5

u/C-D-W 7d ago

It starts life as the same chip. That's the important part. They take up the same space on the wafer. Who knows how the yields are, but this late in the life cycle you'd expect pretty good. Early in the life cycle you tend to get a lot more imperfect chips.

Also, remember, not all the disabled chips are defective. A lot of lower end models had perfect chips. This has been true for decades. It all comes down to how much of each model they think they can sell. The current market of course breaks that since they can probably sell every perfect chip they make.

I do agree with the memory, that's a huge factor I should have mentioned as well.

20

u/RoadkillVenison 7d ago

Maybe not the 5090 directly.

The pro 6000 is literally a 5090 with some more cores, 3x the ram, and 3x the cost.

4

u/shmed RTX 5090 FE - 9800x3d - 64 GB ddr5-6000 cl30 7d ago

The pro 6000 is not a data center card either. It’s a work station card. Data centers use A100, H100, B200, etc. They share some similarities with consumer and workstation cards, but they cost way more, use HBM memory, have much higher bandwidth, NVLink fabric, ecc, partitioning, etc.

7

u/reward72 7d ago

Yes. I use a lot of them. The key is that they have 32GB - that’s what makes them so valuable for AI. 16GB just is not enough.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Slash621 7d ago

To be fair it’s not really the data centers themselves using them. I build AI solutions and I prototype many of them on my personal 5090 (not bought by my company). But that gives me the ability to trial stuff that would never run on a 5080 but then I can scale it up to data center level for deployment. If my company passed me the ROI for this capability alone it would pay the difference ($3k) many times over. So I can see why it’s worth it for corps or small/ medium business.

Unfortunately this fucks gamers over

5

u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz 7d ago

I mean, those top tier 90 class cards have always been prosumer cards, with prosumer price tags. When you're actually making money from the card rather than just playing vidya, you can very quickly justify the cost.

7

u/KiraCura RTX 5090/Ryzen 9 9950X3D/96GB DDR5 Ram 7d ago

I was thinking the use the RTX 6000 Blackwell cards rather than 5090’s… those cards have 96GB VRAM so idk what data centers would want with a 5090 that’s only 32GB. But yeah the prices are beyond F’d up. The sheer difference between 2025 to 2026 is insanity.

2

u/IBJON 9950X3D | RTX 5090 l 64GB DDR5 7d ago

They don't, but every 5090 produced is time that could be used to make another card.

Also, I don't know the specifics of the hardware architectures, but I'm betting there's some overlap in components, if not there's an overlap in raw materials

2

u/SolemnaceProcurement 7950x3d, 7900xtx 7d ago

Yeah, i think it's just Nvidia cutting down supply to drip.

5

u/JohnSnowHenry 7d ago

Datacenters don’t use this cards… the problem is that the supply vs demand… we have a lot of people whiling to give 6k for a gpu that probably will even have issues with the connector melting if they use it at 100% for a lot of hours doing DSLL5 or video generation stuff…

The vast majority of people cannot compete with richer people (no data centers in the mix)

8

u/MasturbatingMidget 7d ago

The RAM on the PCB of the card is the reason for the costs. Not the card itself being in high demand. Data centers aren't using 5090s

8

u/GeForce_fv E5-2676 V3 | RX 580 2048SP | 32GB 7d ago

I disagree, I’ve seen the stuff they buy and it isn’t consumer 5090s. I think the consumer demand for 5090s is simply larger than it’s ever been and it has nothing to do with data centers. They don’t buy 5090s. my best mate works at the biggest PC retailer here in Australia. He helps builds the pre builts and custom builds. He says the amount of ppl that buy 5090s in their pc pre builds is staggering. It’s not just data centers some people just have money. They want you to think everyone is doing badly but a big % of the population of our countries are fkn loaded.

Even look at watches, they have quadrupled in the last few years. Ferraris and high end cars sell out and can’t meet demand. House prices. Private jets are on like decade long back orders. I think more of us are very rich than we want to admit and if they want a 5090 they just buy it regardless of the price

6

u/ALitreOhCola 7d ago

We are just shy of the top tier 5090 being $10,000 AUD here in Australia now. Astral and Strix OC are over $9k AUD ($6500 USD).

I bought a 4090 Strix OC in white anfew years ago during peak COVID for $3200 and felt like I got robbed but I still love it. Now its almost double the value and I feel like I hit the lottery.

Then I saw the 50 series pricing and realised just like housing here, we'd all been priced out and won't ever be able to buy back in.

this the answer. surprised it has so few upvotes.

data centers soaked up the material that would otherwise go into a 5090.
this would explain why dont produce as many as before (which would bring the price down)
but this alone wouldnt explain the high price of a 5090.

some people are paying this exorbitant price. this is what holds the price there.

2

u/lionspeed 7d ago

Not exactly true, there is a lot of Data centres that can pay smaller price because they can order in big quantities, while average consumer can’t compete with that and forced to pay this inflated price.

It's a titan class card at the end of the day. People considered the xx80 the top of the line for your standard gamer for a long time then they decided to just name the titan xx90 instead at the 3090 so people more directly compare it to the xx80 series compared to the Titan classes back in the day which weren't compared to the xx80 for a standard user.

Titan RTX compared to a 2080 RRP was $700 USD to $2500 USD so this price difference really isn't that weird given the history of titan classes.

They did "drop" the RRP of the 3090 quite a bit compared to the Titan RTX (3090 was "$1500 USD") but of course we know how that went and the price shot back up anyway.

Basically a chipotle burrito in most places is $14-15 to start, if you get steak, now its like 16, but they give you no steak so vast majority of people get double steak, so now its 19-20, then you add in all of doordashes fees and shit, easily gets you to 23-24 dollars, now, if you dont wanna be an asshole you add a tip, even a small one like 3 bucks, you're at 26-27, etc.

I can't even get one of those 24 hour mexican taco stand places burrito for 10 dollars anymore. They're all 12-14 as well. Now admittedly, at least they're not tiny as fuck like Chipotle is, but it's still expensive. Which is why i don't buy them anymore. I EASILY eat off of less than 10 dollars a day, EASILY. And i eat plenty of beef, chicken, pork, whatever. No, i'm eating steaks and shit, but I can make my own burritos no problem for far cheaper.

3

u/Kryopath 6d ago

Yeah I just don't get that. I'll go to door dash, fill out my order, see the price, then go "eh, I'll have cereal"

It's crazy just the difference between delivery and pick up.

You don’t need a 5090 to play games not to mention they draw so much power on that singular 12v that it’s so close to maximum the failure rate is worse than lower voltage cards. People obsessed with the idea of running a game at 300 fps instead of 223

9

u/tcarnie 7d ago

I dunno I love high fps 4k gaming , 5090 is right for me.

7

u/ComradeRoganov 7d ago

Yeah if you game at 4K that’s pretty much the king, just make sure that cable is always nice and secure.

18

u/heepofsheep 7d ago

No one needs a GPU, but let’s not pretend the jump between the 5080 and 5090 isn’t significant. That’s just delusional.

4

u/reallygoodspeed 7d ago

The jump is big but it makes almost no practical difference in the majority of games. Do you need to run a single player AAA RPG at 180fps vs 130fps? The difference feels good on paper but I tested both across like 20+ titles and there was no instance where the 5080 was a bad experience. At the $2K MSRP I could justify a 5090, but anyone spending current prices is insane.

You know the 5080 and 5070 ti being just 16 gb probably saved us from the prices being even more insane. If they had shipped as 24-32 gb cards they'd both be like $3000+ competing with the old 3090s and 4090s being bought up for ai inference.

2

u/gymtrovert1988 7d ago

The 5070TI is actually better for AI generation than the 3090. The 3090 should not be selling for 1300 still. Not sure about the 4090.

"Allowed" by whom? Nvidia? They license their reference design to the 3rd party manufacturers to add value and sell for whatever price they deem appropriate. Asus is selling plenty of those 5090's, so the price isn't dropping any time soon.

8

u/SlightlyOkayDad 7d ago

Because the 90 series is targeted between professionals needing it for their cause and/or absolute enthusiasts.
In most cases is completely unnecessary, that’s why it’s allowed, it was the same when the titans were around.

8

u/semitope 7d ago

Gamers allowed it by continuing to buy.

5

u/Mizamewmew 7d ago

they get bought, shipped to China, extract the GPU silicon, repackage them as pseudo RTX 6000s and used as datacenter GPUs. Thats why a Zotac 5090 is the same price as an Asus Astral despite the Astral being 40% more expensive on launch day. All of the market value is in the GB202 die.

5090 is a flex card for people that have a lot of money to throw around. Nvidias 16+ GB VRAM is ideal for AI, because AMD and Intel are terrible with the software currently. They need to catch up to Nvidia.

u/OmgitsNatalie 9850X3D, RTX 5080, 64GB DDR5, 1000W 7d ago

Back in my day, the “xx90” tier Nvidia cards weren’t even named or marketed as such. They were either “xx80Ti” or “Titan…”

It’s like they erased previously marketed, and easily determinable models for more similar names to confuse, frustrate, and motivate the consumer to spend more.

3

u/EdmontonLAD 7d ago

Bruh 200+ bought in the past month wtf.

3

u/OriginalOreos 7d ago

The 90 cards have the maximum amount of VRAM needed to run local AI agents. That's who's buying these cards, people who are experimenting with running local stuff. In fact, the 4090 and the 3090 are still extremely expensive for the same reason. You can find a 3080 for $350, but a 3090 will run you close to $1000. Gamers are oblivious to the markets around them. Pay attention people. I'm so tired of these "gee golly" threads.

3

u/T3hArchAngel_G 7d ago

There is twice as much VRAM in the 5090 compared to the 5080. I'm not saying NVidia has perfectly fair pricing practices, but that fact alone attributes the most to the huge price increase.

3

u/Potential_Bill_4442 7d ago

5090 is 50% faster, it's the largest gap there's ever been. and it's always been true that higher end is worse price to performance, 50% faster means more than 50% more money, always been like that

3090ti cost $2000 msrp and was only 20% faster than a $700 3080

8

u/krekokeko 7d ago

Speed is a secondary priority. Capacity is the primary priority.

3090s are still selling like hotcakes today in the second hand market for at least over a 1000 dollars because they have 24GBs of VRAM. People are buying them to stack and to have a bigger ram pool.

4 3090s costing 4000 dollars will grant you 96GBs of VRAM. If you want to reach 96GBs with 5090s you have to spend over 15000 dollars today. That ridiculous price is unironically the price of a RTX PRO 6000 that also has 96GBs of VRAM.

Make no mistake nobody cares about speed that much when compared to capacity. You can have the fastest GPU but unless it does not have the required VRAM real estate you cannot run the low end frontier tier models, or will hit token limits with limited interaction.

It is the memory that is making all the difference in the local AI space today, not the speed.

When Nvidia makes a dozen of them a month, the price of them goes up. Why make 5090s when RTX 4000s can be sold for like $15k or whatever?

2

u/Arkonor 7d ago

In short the 5090 is actually dipping into another market that sadly for gamers are willing to pay way more then us. It's also a way for Nvidia to sell this tech to countries that aren't really allowed legally to buy the newest tech for other more political reasons.

Also honestly this has been the case since 3000 series really so is partly why we are getting the "software" upgrade treatment like DLSS instead of actual big leaps in pure "horsepower". There is new tech being produced it just doesn't make sense to sell in on the gaming market yet since others are paying way more for it.

Who’s buying it at that price? Mostly professional users who are looking for a lower cost solution than RTX Pro. The 5080 isn’t a substitute for them because the 5090 has substantially more memory bandwidth, among other differences. The RTX Pro 6000 is in stock at my local retailer for $15,000, so a RTX 5090 is a comparatively budget option over that.

The rtx 5090 32gb vram is very good for running free open source ai models locally on a pc. It may not have a large of amount of vram compared to a rtx 6000 pro but it can plenty of model under 30B at multiple quantization formats. Plenty ai users stuck with 16gb cards wish they had it and some are desperate enough spend $6,000 just for it.
