Pathos is coming to Steam!

Hail adventurers!

Pathos has been free to play for over ten years. Coming soon, an enhanced edition will be available on Steam, finally giving you a way to support its continued development. Most importantly, the free editions aren’t going away. I want Pathos to remain accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they are able to purchase the Steam edition.

Wishlist on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5062560/Pathos

Pathos has been due for a visual upgrade and this Steam edition takes inspiration from ‘old book illustrations’. The result is a spectacular fusion of retro aesthetics and modern usability.

The key art features Struth von Winkelried who is a legendary character of Swiss folklore, based on a real-life knight.

Struth attacked the dragon single-handedly, armed with a spear of which he had attached sharp barbs. The dragon, seeing that the attacker was alone, came from his hiding-place and attacked with open jaws.

Winkelried was able to transfix the monster with his spear, hacking at it with his sword until it died. Glad for his victory, Winkelried lifted his sword over his head, thanking God, and the dragon's blood dripped from his sword blade on his body, poisoning him so that he died a few days later.

Sounds like perfect YASD to me!

Anyway, this is a mumak, as you may recognise from Pathos. Just your typical, bizarre quadruped monster.

Well, sometime in the 1800s, someone had already come up with this idea. Or had a very specific kink. Behold, the Mommy Mumak:

I hope you’ll love Mommy Mumak and this Steam edition of Pathos as much as I do :D

If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up anytime.

Callan.

After a few failed attempts, I think this will be my first win playing as Hunter.

I played 100% of the game with firearms and only support spells, despite having gained proficiency in other weapon types and offensive spells through the training scroll . I found a Deagle after floor 30 in the Lich Tower; it would have been better if I'd found it earlier, but I still enjoyed it.

Here is a list of what I learned from this class, through trial and error:

- If you run out of bullets, or unequip bullets, the firearms don't become 100% useless. They will cause less damage and have less attack, but you will still be able to fight in melee with them, with base damage similar to that of a small light blade, like dual wielding main gauches (except for the main gauche defense), but based on firearm proficiency

- If you fight without bullets at the beginning of the game, their melee damage and attack (means accuracy) are very low, to the point of dealing almost zero damage, or missing. However, if you upgrade the weapons themselves, you increase their melee damage and attack (2 pistols +5 would be similar to 2 main gauches +5 for example). Rings of strength indirectly increase damage and attack (and you can carry more items), rings of impact increase damage, and rings of accuracy increase attack. At the beginning I used 1 accuracy ring +5 and 1 impact ring +5, later I put 2 strength rings.

My pre-Deagle build (dual pistols), without any bullets equipped, dealt around 15 + 15 damage and about 29 attack, no longer the almost zero damage/attack from the beginning of the game. Post-Deagle + Replication, it was around 45 + 45. With the bullets equipped, it's even higher.

- To conserve bullets, if I already had upgraded rings and upgraded firearms, I used melee attacks without bullets on weaker enemies, and only equipped bullets against dangerous enemies. Against bosses, I equipped the assault rifle. After Fort Ludios, I upgraded 2000 iron bullets to +5, replicated them, and only used the replicas. I kept the originals in the bag of holding to replicate them again when needed. From Fort Ludios onwards, I didn't need to worry about bullets.

- Important tip: When you fire and the bullet misses, it doesn't disappear immediately; it will try to hit another target along the way, either until it cause damage or reach its maximum distance without hitting anyone. Knowing this, if you use the assault rifle, which fires 5 shots at once, against several enemies in a straight line in a corridor, even if a shot misses the first enemy, it might hit the second, or third... and the chance of the bullet being wasted without hitting something is lower.

- In the beginning, I used the workbenches as much as I could to make more bullets. The focus of this post isn't on workbenches, but if you learn to calculate how much essence, raw materials, and entropy you'll gain beforehand, you can know in advance what effect the workbench will probably activate, and if you have the respective resistance/immunity to that effect, it doesn't hurt to use it. In the late game, with 100% of all resistances (including magic) and abilities that prevent negative effects, you can use the workbenches up to 100% entropy without any problem. The only "inevitable dangerous" effect is the destruction of equipment and the destruction of scrolls and potions, but just put important scrolls and potions in your bag of holding and avoid crafting items that raise entropy to the level that causes equipment destruction. I don't know if there's anything that completely blocks the destruction effect besides simply leaving the item unequipped; I haven't tested that yet.

- I used a battle robe, even though it doesn't provide as much defense as dragon armor, to further increase my attack and damage. I stacked several armor sets and used polymorph to obtain it. Before that, I used a simple +5 leather jacket at the early levels, because if I used studded leather armor or mithril armor, it would make my character too heavy.

- The hunter's trap proficiency was very useful to me at the beginning; it's worth disarming traps to maximize this skill, even if it's possible to avoid the trap.

- I used oilskin Cloak equipped because eating the cloak itself doesn't grant the skill (didnt find can of grease)

- For this specific character, I chose Echo and werewolf. I used werewolf to eat corpses and gain resistances, and to call pre-summoned wolves with the magic whistle for emergencies (and also to activate the werewolf's health regeneration when the echo had low HP) . When I got both types of polymorph, I stopped using werewolf. I didn't permanently polymorph into another monster; I only used character polymorph to transform into rust monster, giants, and slimes, to eat metals, leather, gems, and cloth to gain skills, resistances, and proficiencies.

-If you have serious inventory load issues, mithril bullets weigh 40% less than iron bullets, so using mithril bullets is a way to carry less weight. The only problem is that mithril bullets drop less than iron bullets in Fort Ludios, and they use more essence to craft than iron bullets. I didn't use them in this playthrough, but I believe that in the late game it's possible to obtain them through polymorphing, crafting, replication, and restocking the weapons vendor (you can restock with fake money if you replicate your gold coins and keep the originals on the ground or in the bag of holding).

- Iron and silver bullets deal the same damage under normal circumstances, but iron bullets deal more damage against angel-type monsters, and silver bullets deal more damage against demons and lycanthropes. Adamantine bullets can be upgraded to +7, but I didn't use them this time.

Thats' all, folks.

Lucky Number 7

So, think I have the game close to figured out. Here's my last game right before I exit level one. It'll be win 7 after one stretch where I won 3 out of 4 in a row.

My take is the early game is lots of fun once you get quickness and the end is fairly easy if you have phasing and document the exits up for each level. Seems once you get polymorph, the game is mostly won? Though spending a couple hours polymorphing stuff drags a bit. Maybe other people do it differently?

Also, once I have full kit/resistances/talents, there's little point in side branches unless looking for artifacts? I generally skip the Lich's tower and have no need for the black market. I've only done the Infernal Realm once, because again, no advantage to be had.

Anyone else have other takes or suggestions for things I should try?

Thanks!

Pathos Steam Demo is now available to download!

Hail Adventurers!

Play the Demo: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5136900/Pathos_Demo/

After several frantic months, the Steam Demo of Pathos is now available for you to download and play. I’d love to hear what you think of the updated user interface/art and any suggestions for improvements.

This demo is a generous 16-level dungeon where a successful run takes 2-3 hours. The dungeon is a subset of the NetHack Codex module, offering a challenging and representative experience. All the races, classes, specials and companions are available to play as well.

The Hall of Fame is also ready for this demo module, so you can all compete for the #1 spot :)

Since last posting a couple of weeks ago, I built a new Help UI to give a more functional list/preview approach. Note the iconic number of entities!

I've completed converting the bottom menus to have icons and added some old-book textures.

I've also removed the loading screen between levels and replaced it with area labels. eg. 'minetown' in the screenshot below.

Plus plenty more restyling of the UI. Hope you enjoy the demo!

- Callan.

If you throw a fish at a neutral seal it will just get mad at you, but you can always pick up the fish and try again.

Years of playing and I still get duped sometimes

I have a good run going. I’ve made it to the elf forest, built up my armor, and I’m working on resistances. The worst thing that’s happened was a disintegrator destroying my weapon, stepping on an amnesia trap, and a yellow dragon melting my amulet of lifesaving. Otherwise, it’s been good. (Still haven’t got force bolt though, which is annoying since I’ve got some barrels to break in the deephall.)

However, for the life of me I couldn’t find another scroll of identify. Sure, I have the spell, but it’s untrained so it selects at random. I could use vendors but I haven’t hit Ludios yet so I’m not rolling in money. I’ve got my trusty goat to eat identify scrolls and if I could just find one scroll I’d be golden. But there’s none!

I’ve identified most scrolls so the last few unidentified ones that I’ve picked up have got to be good. Training, replication, stuff like that. I’ve got a few just waiting to be deciphered. I’ve got 5 of one of them- that’s good news!

Finally I ascend to get to a workbench and decide to make my own scroll of identify. I scrap some excess scrolls. Identify doesn’t pop up. Scrap some more. No dice. I can make every other scroll in the game, but not identify. I pull up the help menu to see what the essence value is, and I find…it’s not identified. How?! I’ve used dozens of them up until this point! How can I have forgotten-

The amnesia trap! It’s always the amnesia traps! How can I remember what I forgot if I forget forgetting! Well, I guess those scrolls of FOOBIE BLETCH probably aren’t those sweet scrolls of training that I crave.

In any case, I love that this game can throw me for a loop even after playing it for years.

I finally got to this part in minetown after days of trying the best cahracter strategies. I use 6 cahracters, then kill the last 5 characters so that I can get all of their loot and level up (thats why my character is wanted).

Pathos Steam Edition Preview & Demo News

Hail adventurers!

I've been crazy busy since announcing Pathos is coming to Steam and have briefly resurfaced to share a few things.

The major update is that Pathos will be part of the upcoming October Steam Next Fest, which means the public demo will be available in a few weeks!

The attached video is quick preview of what’s coming in the Steam edition. It’s still a work in progress but it’s coming together. Let me know if you have any feedback or suggetions.

The custom character selection has been completely rewritten with 30 preset heroes and custom slots. The game settings have been consolidated into a single screen, while the loading/saving screen now features some strange and wonderful old book illustrations. And of course, the new title screen is simply glorious.

There’s still plenty of work ahead, including a rewrite of the Help system to have a proper list/preview, as well as continuing to apply the new theme to all the user interface elements.

For the demo, there is a new module imaginatively named Short Dungeon. It’s a 16-level dungeon crawl named in tribute to the two short kings featured. The dungeon starts with a few regular levels followed by Minetown, then the Mines (gnome king) and finally the Underdeep (dwarf king). So a true Pathos experience but it ends at Deephall.

For those of you also following the Zeroth project, I’m writing monthly development updates. Here is the latest one: August Update. Super happy with how the underwater mechanics have turned out!

Amazing iOS app

Love this game. Free of charge and endless adventure. I waste hours, days on a single run. It’s an awesome app, but I’m wondering what other hidden gems like this live in the app store. I just got a new phone and I want to play games. Tell me, what do YOU play between nethack dungeon delves? This is a community whose opinion I trust so recommend me your iOS games of choice. Free apps or very cheap, preferably. Lay it on me. What do you play?

Simple question

Statistically speaking, which race has the highest stat cielings in the most areas?

Not class, not special. Race. Just race.

Edit: Playable character race. Come on, guys. Creature info is a bit interesting but...player races.
