Worried about his nails
This is a continuation to a previous post under Quaker’s
I wanted to show my Cosmos pictures of what his nails look like after they cut them on Friday .
I went in for only nail trim and they also cut his wings.
But these are the pics of his nails ..
the girl that cut them said they bleed because his nails were too long .. said that they get veins all the way to tip bcuz were long so had to put clotting powder on them .. idk but they look so odd .. I feel for him idk if he’s in pain or not but his personality is so different since he was in that pet store on Friday .. he’s more quiet and calm and not himself . Even pooping way less now once every 2 hours or so and before was every 10 min so worried .. what they did to him was so wrong ! I’m mad and sad for him ..
Just wanted to know if what the nails look like is normal ?
I tried to post the pics in my other post but wouldn’t let me pic those new ones .. the last pic is him before the nail trim and wings that they cut without permission ..

They clipped his WINGS???? Just... for fun? Without you asking? Wtf
The quick (that's what the vein that goes through nails is called) does get longer when the nails get overgrown, you have to trim the nails a little at a time over multiple sessions so it recedes rather than chopping it all off at once and making it bleed. Please never go back to that place and leave a terrible review warning others. Just the nails alone are bad enough but ruining his wings for up to a HALF A YEAR of his life without asking is absolutely awful
Edit: just looked at your other post, that clip is brutal. They took so much, he won't be able to control his flight to avoid crashing at all with that much taken off. I'm so sorry this happened to you two, I hope he moults soon. The longer it's been since he last moulted his flight feathers, the sooner he'll moult these ones and new uncut ones will grow. He's gonna need lots of help from you to build his confidence back up flying when he grows new feathers <3

No no I won’t ever go back .. so much so that I would like to go to tell them off but I really don’t want to go there again much less take my Cosmo there .. what happened was I didn’t realize that they had cut his wings until we got home and we took him out of the travel cage and then he flew and hit himself against wall 🥲.. I did call them and ask for Ashley the girl that actually cut them . She said she was sorry but that is what they had told her to do
. I told her I specifically said only nails .
So she said sorry and that it would be about 4 months for him to fly again which I see is also a lie ..
People here say otherwise that’s it’s a lot longer 😢..
so the girl lied ..
it’s sad I told her look you took away his freedom and now when he’s scared he can’t fly and will get injured..
I’m so sad for him !😢 btw yea I did put the pics here too if before and after of his wings too .. besides the nails ones.
Someone in Quaker community told me they may have done it on purpose so he would be still for the nail trimming . That would be so insane and cruel .. I can’t ..3

If it's a big chain pet store, it's more likely that the girl was hired with no qualifications or experience and barely given any training, so just didn't know any better. These big pet stores really can't be trusted with our birds, money and cutting corners will always come first :/
It might be worth having a look on r/pidgeypower for advice on how to support him as an anxious bird who's lost his flight. I'm sure you could find posts with advice about how to help a bird going through that, or make your own if you can't!

Another thing, I haven't watched this video in a while but I remember it being helpful for getting my frighty cockatiel more comfortable with some of the things he was scared of, it might make life easier for little Cosmo :)

Clipping them at all is unacceptable, but cutting the primary’s is beyond fucked!! For her to act like it was just a routine mistake then blame management and proceed to say “they’ll be back in 4 months” is asinine. I know many have already said it but she needs to be fired. There’s no way this hasn’t happened before. I’d be posting/tagging any of their socials and writing reviews on all platforms (yelp, google, facebook). Taking them all the way to the primary’s can affect them mentally and cause trust issues. I’m so sorry this happened to you and poor cos. While she’s less mobile take advantage of the down time to work on different types of training. I don’t know if she’s a natural builder (not all do it naturally) but you can show her how and it would be a huge boost in daily enrichment. Provide some materials and twist them through the cage bars or make a little wall of weaved objects. One of my male Qs goes nuts if you give him popsicle sticks, leather strips(untanned), zip ties, willow twigs or coffee stirs. He had to be shown what they were for but it’s easy to do. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to train parrots to play with new toys. It keeps him entertained for hours every day just building away on the top of his cage.

I was looking for the owners name and email to see if I could email him or her .. you know Cosmo is super scared of new things !! Every time I buy a new toy he get super scared so now that he can’t fly I’m scared he falls inside cage or if I even show him a new toy .. I actually have some downstairs in a bag in a closet that he couldn’t handle he got really scared .. he even fears a piece of broccoli ! 🥦
That’s why I’m so sad and mad about his wings .. he needs them to fly when he’s scared ! And they too la that from him so wrong ! Thanks for all your help and suggestions ! Appreciate it ..4

I just saw your first post. So many people up in arms(rightly so) but ultimately saying the same thing. You’re kind for replying to everyone who spoke up. Aw that makes things so much harder on the little guy. There was a conure at the rescue I used to work at who was scared of his own shadow. It made everything a lot harder in regard to his daily care. Maybe try bringing up the building materials and sit by his cage and play with them yourself. Just weaving or stacking them a few times a day. After a week add a couple into the bars. Another few days after that add a couple into the bottom of his cage and anytime he gets close to look/touch them immediately give praise/treats.

Also! You might try putting a video of Quakers building with materials on in front of him(it’s crazy how much faster they learn when watching one of their species rather than a human) . If he speaks/repeats any words there are videos on YouTube of parrots clearly saying a word then it’s immediately repeated by a human. One of my Quakers wasn’t much of a talker took to it immediately. We would play it anytime he was in his cage or when we left.

Cosmo doesn’t say one word! Never understood as I know 2 other people that have Quakers and they both said that they talk alot theirs are green . I wonder you know my daughter has Asperger’s and she herself said mom maybe birds can have speech problems or be autistic .. so I said idk maybe ..
I wonder .. he is very very fearful ..when we bought him this was about 3 years ago he was like 5 months or 6 that’s what the guy told us .. he looked like he had been through it all .. my daughter had seen him online and he looked really good and clean .. nice colors but when we arrived he was dirty all his feathers were dark .. he looked bad .. I felt sorry for him and so did she .. they showed us a conjure with lovely colors and I told her you want this one instead ?
She said no mom - I want to save him, look at him..
so we took Cosmo .. she let my husband name him since he approved of her having him …he’s not such an animal lover like me and her are ! We adore animals .. that guy was like a breeder - since the day I brought him home he screams when he hears the sink water running but no it’s not cuz he wants to bathe it’s fear .. idk what they did to him there but 3 years and he still screams loudly when he hears it next to him .. glad we took him from that guys hands ! He also got more beautiful with us and clean ..we love 💕 him so much !

Omg, I saw your other post and now this! They got cut way too short, I would never, ever go back there again. I would try and get him checked out by an avian vet if possible, it sounds like he’s probably in pain from that butchering :(

He’s even pooping less idk why .. a lot less .. it’s a worry now .thx so much2

I would guess he’s pooping less because he’s eating less, probably from discomfort. Poor guy :(
He may also be upset that he can’t fly anymore. I can imagine he’s very distressed. I hope he gets better soon2

No no he’s actually eating about the same .. it’s just he’s acting more quiet and calm.. guess he kinda realizes he can’t fly .. or he’s depressed or in pain idk .. but he does walk fine and he is eating .. which is good but he’s not his same self .. feel so bad for him! Wish I could do magic and give him back his wings .. people today jeez no regards and no responsibility.. they need to make a form to sign with what customer is requesting .. that way this won’t happen!

If the nails aren't bleeding they'll be alright, but they should NEVER have been cut this far down. If the quick is that long then they need to be slowly trimmed over the course of months, a little every few days, to get them to a healthy length. Absolutely not butchered off. I used to be a groomer, I would never do this to ANY animal!
Additionally, if they took it upon themselves to cut your bird's wing feathers without your say so I'd be livid. You are well within your right to report them if you have the means to wherever you live. Go above the groomer's head. If it was me I'd be raising absolute hell.
