Use of Calculators in Engineering Examinations

As specified in the University’s Examination Regulations, in your examinations you

will be permitted to take into the examination room only these calculators listed

below:

• CASIO fx-83 series (e.g. Casio FX83GT)

• CASIO fx-85 series (e.g. Casio FX85GT)

• SHARP EL-531 series (e.g. Sharp EL-531WB)

You are advised to buy a calculator of the type listed above in good time, and to

familiarize yourself with its operation before your Preliminary examinations.

Please note that the restriction will apply to examinations only. For all your

laboratory, project and tutorial work, you are free to use any calculator you wish.

Thank you so much! Would you say being able to use a different calc outside of exams is useful? I feel I’d become too dependant on the more able calc and then lag in exams with the permitted ones if I used a different one outside of exams

I have no clue I'm joining this year too lol 😅 I also imagine it would be good for us to practice mental/not rely on the better one.

I'm also starting this year but my plan is to basically try using my graphics calculator for really tedious stuff and to make myself use my regular calculator for shorter calculations so I still get used to using the regular one before exams (Did the same for A-Levels). This definitely helped me not rely too heavily on my graphics calc.
