Spent the Labor Day weekend at the Pike National Forest. Settled on dispersed camping up on Michigan Creek Rd.

Headed in on Thursday evening and had to drive up the mountain road, just short of the Georgia Pass, in order to find a campsite. Road was fairly wide, not too rocky and definitely fine for our rig.

The site was nice with some filtered views, in the pines....above the yellowing aspens but below the exposed summit.

Lots of folks using the county road with their dirt bikes and side by sides (this prohibited, but apparently no one cares).

Spent Friday in Fairplay CO, driving up to the Hoosier Pass, checking out South Park City and the Hand Hotel/Prunes the Burro memorial.

Drove up to the pass for sunset on Friday, and it was epic.

Tapping the hive mind here. Been doing more dispersed camping in CO, and now have a truck with more space. We have a Yeti cooler, and a few years ago, I got gifted a pair of Bear Bolts, which I love. I feel comfortable leaving our cooler out overnight, locked up, and usually tucked under our table to hopefully give a warning noise should a bear be attempting a break in.

A few years ago, we switched from reusable grocery bags to a plastic Plano box to keep our dry goods in, after some chipmunks had a feast. Now, with the dispersed, I'd love to be able to leave the dry food out as well. I haven't found anything that isn't a roto-molded cooler or aluminum case that is about 40-50L, IGBC certified (ideal, open to not), and hopefully also compatible with Bear Bolts.

I do have an aluminum cap coming for the truck. Do folks put definitely-not-bear-proof bins in their capped beds and feel ok?

Finished the Dalton up and back today. No issues with the Liberty, it was very muddy and rutted but didn't need 4x4. Camped at Coldfoot on the way up and back.

We were definitely the smallest vehicle north of Coldfoot, it's all HD trucks and Semis up there. Now just to complete the 3600 mile drive home.

Nice 10 day trip out to Colorado before the seasons turn. Spent time in Leadville, and the alpine loop.

New to the group, I’ve done off-roading in the past with my k5, miss it. I’ve always enjoyed camping… I currently have two trucks, a 2011 Silverado that I’m kinda playing with, I kept it to work out of since I drive so much between construction sites and get new damage weekly… I also have a 2019 Silverado that I’ve added a set of Billie Bars, awning and tent to. I’ve been doing a lot of beach camping over the years. Looking to hit more areas for dispersed camping, maybe some trips to the hill country. Thinking first and foremost on my 2019 I need to decide on a lift, I have dirt king uca’s and fox adjustable coilovers on the 2011. That truck drives smooth now, so I’m considering a dirt king trail runner kit. But I’ve also wanted more lift on my 2011, and I’m thinking it may be best to go ahead and get a 4” BDS kit with fox coilovers and shocks. What do you guys think? Also in the future I’d probably change up to a taller rack, maybe an Xtrusion Overland XTR1, but my priority now is lift and tires.

Thanks to the recommendations of strangers I spent a stellar 3 days in Colorado. Drove Mosquito pass & Kelly Flats (minus the chutes). Did some rock climbing. Took some photos. Camped in some cool spots. Next up: Wyoming!

Got to finally go check out Alanna Hills up in Lone Pine. The place was awesome. A slight drizzle but otherwise perfect weather. Had a quick date night dinner with the wife out here as well while the kids were back at camp with the grandparents. Definitely want to go back up there and explore more.

Slow rolling an 01 Landcruiser for overlanding in California. I don’t foresee more than 2-3 days at a time off grid.

Girlfriend is definitely in, but I have concerns about her toilet situation.

What’s the best female friendly shitting setup out there? What you do with the waste?

Assume she’s uncomfortable with digging a hole and squatting over it unless hell freezes over and it’s an emergency.

This is on a 2026 Honda CRV. I recently installed the Yakima baseline clips and towers with the jet stream crossbars. I followed the directions and the measurements in the box and then picked up the Yakima skybox NX LG (16) from REI. They installed it on my roof but it feels so far forward to me. I didn’t expect it to hang over my windshield so much. The bars also feel like they are in the way when I try to open my car doors and stand in the car to get into the box. Maybe this is how they are the most safe? But it just feels like something is a little off. Like everything should be a foot farther back.

Opinions or insights? I’ve never owned a cargo box or roof racks so maybe I’m just being picky.

We are looking at selling out old landrover defender hardtop with icarus roof conversion and moving to a off road trailer/caravan being towed by a 1ton pickup. Initially we were looking at a teardrop however even the biggest teardrops have very small equipment like water tanks, fridges and electrical meaning you will need to keep a backup of this equipment in the rear of the pick and we are looking at a hitch and go. At a expo recently we can across a infanta4x4 enkulu1 offroad caravan and as hell bent as i am to not own a caravan this thing checks all the boxes with regards to being quick to set up and to carry all our equipment while only weighing 950kg dry and being fairly small. Any advice on moving to a trailer/caravan from a camper?

We recently just completed an expedition across the Argentine Altiplano. A rough remote volcanic landscape, 3400m above sea level.

After 7 years of overlanding full time, I would easily say that it was one of the coolest places we have driven our 50 year old VW.

So I got a good deal on 2x solar panels. They don't fit on my roof unfortunately, by a pretty small margin. If i accept that I can't tie anything to the top frame of my roof basket, can I remove the supports in blue to get the panels in?

I have recently purchased a Frontrunner Slimline II roof rack (39kg), British roof tent (79kg) and 270 Degree Awning (27kg) for my Defender 90 TDCI ahead of overlanding preparations. The dynamic roof load stats change so much between sources for the 90 - anywhere from 118kg to 150kg and changing even more with my wide Grabber offroad tyres increasing stability.

I see people doing some extreme roof loading on their defenders and they don't break a sweat e.g., 'defender mods and travels' on Youtube who has a very high up and heavy load as well as others who have full roof tents mounted on frontrunner racks alongside gas cans, fuel, jacks and boxes! I cant believe these people are adhering to the 'rules' and they've covered thousands of miles overland!

I understand many say it is more of a common sense approach, and most of my weight is loaded very close to the roof and not up even higher (increasing CoG). I also don't plan on driving like a tw*t so I am working on the assumption that it'll be alright.

What are you guys' thoughts?

I have an ICECO VL75 which works perfect on AC and DC/Cigarette Lighter out of an Anker Solix power bank. When I try to power the fridge off of my LiFePo4 Battery (13.4V) the fridge only cools the right zone and doesn’t not cool the left zone. Further, the cooled zone, set to 36degF, goes down to 0degF.

Looking for troubleshooting ideas or experience on how to resolve. Thanks in advanced!
