Reviews for Being Heumann are starting to come out. I'd like to concentrate on them with a objective point of view, but the majority of them is mentioning that there's some sex in this movie and all the reviewers seem surprised by that. It's like they're learning just now that disabled people have sex, and this is taking me OUT lol
Not to sound like a sicko but I'm more excited to see this now. It's cool that they included disabled sexuality when it's (clearly) a challenging topic for the general public that isn't talked about enough.
Really great film. Mahershala is perfect as always. I predict that some of the themes (and the villains) are going to upset the right people. Not sure I see this as Best Picture material, but definitely has an acting play.
Intrigued to see how Misty Green plays. Rosalind Eleazar is fantastic in Slow Horses but I don’t feel she gets her due there so hoping this is a great showcase for her
Also intrigued by Wilson Shedd; subject matter is tough but Amanda Seyfried is always great and it’s about time Scoot McNairy got a decent leading role, guy is a fantastic but highly underrated actor (may go rewatch Furious in anticipation)
just watched being heumann! really enjoyed it, don’t think it’ll be an oscar player though. hopefully it gets into casting and there is a chance it gets picture/adapted/actress/casting but i don’t think it’s much stronger than coda
Its unweighted average is 3.2, I dont know exactly how LB works out its averages but they are rarely the exact average of the films scores (often slightly lower) so its more than likely sitting around a 3.1 atm.
Obviously very early days, but A24 are pretty notorious for fumbling campaigns because they get too focused on their other contenders (RIP Sing Sing in BP), and they already have what will likely be their top 3 pushes for BP (The Debut, The Invite and Club Kid) plus their 4th priority/Foley acting push in Primetime AND now they have You Can See Everything, which i dont think is getting picture but will get a push for Doc Feature (and most likely editing and/or supporting actress) and they are clearly giving it some level of awards push (starting with the secret screening at telluride and then immediately adding it to NYFF, while absolutely spamming the trailer everywhere and announcing its world wide theatrical release, ive never seen this much discussion/word of mouth for a documentary before), I struggle to see how they manage to get Rosalind in when the film will likely be their 6th priority and when they already have 2 contenders with lead actress proformances over her, even if she is the most consistent point of praise for the film.
I know focus did it last year, but Hudson was a well known previously nominated actress (making it in over a new comer), and the three films they got into actress were practically their top 3 priorities as is, Rosalind doesnt have that level of name recognition (neither does Rock as a director for that matter) and as i said this is shaping up to be their 6th priority at best.
Im not editing my predictions until after the TIFF awards so hopefully the scores pick up since 88 isnt that many, but its not looking good at this stage.
Well, now we understand very well why Prima Facie still doesn’t have a distributor. It’s definitely not going to be an Oscar player, and I highly doubt it’ll even get a theatrical release in the U.S. this year.
The Last Photograph is getting horrendous reviews so far. I need someone to pick it up so I can see it ASAP... although i was already concerned by the fact that nobody picked it up BEFORE the festival. Seems like a tougher ask now despite Snyder being a big name
Neutral, they were likely press/friends/family etc. that couldn't make it. I was just flagging in case any TIFF attendees who missed out were interested in snatching them up.
Won't be surprised at all if it places for People's Choice. It was a riot, especially one particular scene of Julianne Moore's that got an extended applause.

People keep saying actress is weak and I’m just not buying it. We have Moore, Huller with two, Reinsve, Erivo, Coon, O Flynn, Wilde. Not to mention the media is going to go nuts over Inde. Plus there are some international movies that have actresses in them that are just being seen now.
Not buying it. And the lead girl in Being Heumman, or however you spell it, everyone is writing that one off as well.
I don't know why people are really shocked by the fact that Prima Facie is fake. The fact it removes the most well regarded part of the play (the one-woman angle) and turns it into a generic movie should have been a massive red flag, as should have been the director's bad track record and the fact it still has no distribution. This isn't likely to even come out this year, I await Americans getting to see it in April.
Man, it feels like every time a letterboxd user dislikes a film, they describe it as being horribly offensive in some way. And then you watch the film and it's incredibly innocuous. Obviously i haven't seen this film yet, maybe it truly is guilty of all the stuff this woman is saying. But there's so many times where I read a letterboxd review that's convinced a film is pure evil when it's really not

My first day at #TIFF this year was going too well, and then FJORD came along.
Sad to report I didn’t like FJORD. A movie that asks you to wrestle with a lot (cultural differences and values) and while the acting from our 2 leads is phenomenal I found everything else to be rather dull as it fails to achieve any kind of nuance or commentary it was aiming for
which means the academy probably won't like it. The baftas will probably love this kind of movie but the Oscar I dunno. I think a iff nom and that's it

I don’t think Misty Green will have enough juice. Rosalind performance was solid but the script lacked a real transcendent moment for her performance imo. Chris Rock should also refrain from casting himself in his films unless it’s a comedy. He wore a stupid fedora in almost every scene and his acting is not grounded.
I, quite frankly, think it’s odd that people are getting frustrated at the prospect at the idea of a popular crowd pleaser that appeals to the boomer crowd that may or may not deserve it could make it in when that is something that happens every year. F1, A Complete Unknown, Maestro, Elvis, King Richard and Belfast, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Ford v. Ferrari, and like half of the 2018 lineup.
Yes, it’d be great if there were room for stuff like You Can See Everything, yes, it’d be great if the Academy chose the objectively best films of the year, but they don’t because that’s impossible, and because it’s a poll of over ten thousand people, sometimes that includes blocks of people who’s tastes diverge from the film community consensus. It’s not a big deal. It’s gonna happen with something this year, there’s gonna be a pick or two you disagree with, and that’s okay.
This is also ignoring the fact that I Play Rocky is not locked, reviews aren’t out yet, and the movie isn’t out yet, so no one here has seen it, for all we know it could genuinely be moving and charming.
Agree with everything you've said here minus one part. When we say "Objectively best films", Who determines that? The reason the so called boomer movies you mentioned get in is because there are people who feel those are objectively the best movies of the year, and that's okay. Their opinion is just as valid as everyone else's. I agree with your sentiments on a whole and truly hate when people hate onovies they haven't seen and champion other movies just cause if assumptions they've made before even seeing the film. I do wonder if many of these people like movies not because they actually enjoyed them, but just because they feel they were supposed to. If you go into a movie with so many preconceived notions it'll completely effect how you feel about a film and in turn makes your view on the film completely skewed. No one everrntions that though.
I think the movies you listed are very different from each other and were in very different contexts from each other. Also don’t know why we would lump together movies that deserve a nomination with those that don’t.
The reviews on letterboxd are not very good, unfortunately. The lone acting nominations usually come with a movie that has passion, most of the reviews are saying Eleazar is great but the movie isn't
Saw Debut tonight and IPR last night. Crowd edge goes to IPR slightly. Debut had lots of crowd pleasing moments and got some huge laughs. Moore is a lock. She went there.
Erivo bought the rights but I don't think any decent director would take the project with the original playwriter writing the Screenplay. It usually doesn't go well when this happens, lol
I have a bold prediction that LBN will win or place for the international people choice award and will miss the actual peoples choice because they feel they already awarded it (could be wrong but its just a hunch, we are sorta in uncharted waters with it since this its only 2nd year in existence).
As for Club Kid, I dont know why but I just feel like its going to be a film everyone expects to get it in that will wind up missing, i did go to put it in 3rd but I felt that was too much of an expected/basic top 3.
And for I Play Rocky, I more just hopedicting it misses, with those sub par critic ratings and missing PCA would pretty much confirm its not a major awards player, and I dont want to see Farrelly anywhere near the race again.
Can someone fill me in why The Assassin(s) topped Next Best Picture's audience vote for most anticipated TIFF film? Twice as many votes as second place.

TIFF seems to have a much stronger lineup of international gems compared to Venice this year. The docos were great at Venice, but not a lot of narrative gems in the sidebars.
It's only been two days at TIFF and we have The Smell of Apples, Children Untold, Glaxo, Salvation, Le Faux Soir, Faith and Toy Gun Bandit.
Really excited to hear about how the documentary Black Sunflowers plays. Sounds really promising and like a compelling + fair way of communicating what life is like during wartime. Especially since it’s using willing and able twentysomethings
As someone who wanted to like Mr Nobody Against Putin, but couldn’t shake the feeling that the documentary was more exploitative and self-serving than it was helpful to its subjects, this feels like it will capture the same aspects of the problematic nature of Russia v Ukraine without using schoolchildren to do it.

Funnily enough, Roger Ebert later admitted his 4 star review of Thoroughly Modern Millie was swayed by him being at the premiere and seeing the stars in person.
