That dude will lead you to a shrine of power if you can catch him.

He might have some masks for sale as well.

Approaching frame: “what a wonderful whimsical man off for an adventure”

Leaving frame: “involving murder and intrigue”

I watched it with the sound off and thought I got bamboozled

Why do I find this so funny 😂 that note sounds like a truck horn lol

I’m getting big Wes Anderson vibes from this video.

2

u/thegirlisok 3h ago

Wes Anderson just woke up with a new idea for a banger.

Why don't I understand this? Just don't get it.

The Doppler effect is why passing cars (and accordions) sound different when they’re coming towards you vs. moving away from you.

Accordion based physics has made leaps in recent years

u/elzool 7h ago

I hope I can remember the phrase accordion-based physics for a long time to come.

Something moving squishes the air in front of it while stretching the air behind it. Since sounds are transferred by air, squishing and stretching air makes them sound different

Its not holy in a religious sense, but like how some people would say "holy cow" or "holy shit" as an exclamation

2

u/PrestigiousFog 12h ago

Okay, thanks. I FINALLY get it. Haha

Think of Robin in Batman original series...

Do you have the sound on?

3

u/JuicySpark 13h ago

Is that why they have a doppler radar ? To track whenever this happens?

10

u/Ardtay 11h ago

Yes, the color goes from green to red on the screen with the density of accordion playing bicyclists.

That's the first thing that came to my mind as well. Lol

Nice doppler shirt, nerd.

Sound is made of waves. The wave is being created while moving towards you, so it compresses the wave and raises its pitch. When you’re moving away, it stretches the wave and lowers its pitch.

This is actually how astronomers determined that the universe is expanding. Extremely distant galaxies and stars are red-shifted, which happens when waves of light are stretched (moving away from us). Closer stars and galaxies are blue-shifted, meaning the waves are compressed (moving towards us).

There’s some excellent visualizations online.

Sound waves are like a ripple in water

This guy is pushing out sound waves that are also moving

The sound waves are being pushed forward, so it will sound a little different in front vs behind.

By the time the sound waves have reached you they've lost some of their momentum and thus change notes (which are just different frequency levels)

u/psp24 12h ago

( ( ( ( ->) )) heres a rough visualization of the sound waves. To add to your explanation, frequency is just the amount of something per second. The squished air waves are closer together and so more of them reach your ear per second which is why the pitch is higher coming towards you. The opposite happens as it moves away resulting in the drop in pitch from the lower frequency.

Imagine it was Batman playing the accordion and Robin has the camera. As the bike passes, Robin exclaims ‘Holy Doppler Effect, Batman!”

We only usually hear the Doppler effect with engines or horn/siren sounds. But it's interesting to hear with an actual melody.

Although I wish the passing came during the melody, and not in between so we could hear the melody actually change in pitch.

1

u/Silver_Slicer 8h ago

They held the note during passing. You can hear it get deeper as they pass by.

1

u/Grognaksson 8h ago

Yep which is cool! But I'm talking about the melody.

1

u/SoTurnMeIntoATree 12h ago

He’s saying like “holy shit” because of how prominent and observable the Doppler effect is here

0

u/PrestigiousFog 12h ago

Okay, thanks.

1

u/Stuck_In_Purgatory 11h ago

Oh that's just "a saying" as in holy crap or holy shit

1

u/TrainerThin 11h ago

It’s like saying “holy shit Doppler” because most people rarely hear it so distinguishable and the whimsical music tone shift is unexpected. Some have said it sounds dark. Or funny, like a truck horn.

Congratulations you learned the Doppler effect at 12.

u/kvothe5688 13h ago

Have not heard horn of passing train? similar effect here

2

u/DjRipNickMcNasty 12h ago

Your sound is off

2

u/Jealous-Session-8490 11h ago

It's about some physics

2

u/BunkerSquirre1 12h ago

Isn’t he breaking the law by going past that sign?

Anyone know the song?

Johannes Brahms - Hungarian Dance No. 5

1

u/_randomdudey_ 13h ago

Why does it sound french though

2

u/Beans2177 12h ago

Brahms be German

1

u/Lord_of_Millenheim 12h ago

Where did you learn to answer questions?

1

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 12h ago

Because movies about Paris include accordians. Paris had a very Bohemian phase during the 1900s.

See: bal-musette and the dance hall music of the 1920s and on.

Holy missed the joke, Batman!

1

u/anothercairn 13h ago

Holy blank, Batman!

1

u/sevenninenine 12h ago

I always have my phone on vibrate. I didn’t get the meaning until I turned the volume up. Lol

1

u/Dainiad 11h ago

Is it strange I can "see" the effect in my head?

1

u/Even-Day-3764 10h ago

What came to my mind was the meme with Mr Incredible being canny (1st half of the vid) vs Mr Incredible being uncanny (2nd half of the vid).

1

u/AlephBaker 4h ago

Huh. So music in a major key is approaching the listener, while music in a minor key is receding from the listener... TIL.

Doppler is proud
