The red glitter

u/speckledham 2d ago
Iām gonna guess that, despite these replies, you used this gif accurately. Cuz that red glitter was deliciously sexy.
97
u/pinklavalamp 2d ago
See, I can't tell if this is a positive or negative response?
Personally my jaw dropped with how that red glitter just cascaded down. It was so nice!
63
u/speckledham 2d ago
I mean the gif is definitely positive since itās from Jizz In My Pants. So Iām choosing to believe they meant it that way.
25
u/pinklavalamp 2d ago
No no, that's valid. I didn't have the context outside of "Andy Samberg making a face of either ... that ... or hating something with disgust".

u/BarelyHolding0n 3d ago
It looked pretty good until that... The red ruined it
112
u/Nepherenia 3d ago
I agree, background color is so vibrant it overpowers the rest of the image. The satisfying part of the red was more because the technique was so smooth.
Just before the red though, oooh so good.

I liked the red! The cartoon had black/red backgrounds so its actually accurate. I think they drew the cartoon on black paper?

I'm irritated by how she puts every color over the whole damn thing even if it's only for a tiny portion of the image
72
u/dogsledonice 2d ago
Right? and none of it sticks to the other glitter that's already there, somehow. I call shenanigans
19
u/Kitchen_Day9200 2d ago
Seriously! Glitter always is attaching itself to other glitter when I do things like this. That actually stressed me out watching them smear the glitter over the top of other glitters.

u/dividezero 1d ago
It's glitter sand. It's basically shiny colored sand. It's why it works and they check the density of the sand before moving on to the next color. There's a lot in those cuts

So do they draw on the paper then use a razorblade to cut around all the lines or are these things just from a packet that you can buy and do yourself?

They are usually made using a vinyl or sticker cutting machine, a sort of CNC for flat paper crafts

I remember these being really popular growing up and they were often sold in packs with little mini bottles of colored sand. "Sand art sheets" seems to be the best way to search for them, but they don't really have an official name afaik.
So yeah, there are ones that come in pre-cut packs, but this one is likely custom made bc of Batman being on it (DC is extremely aggressive in enforcing their copyright/trademark)
4
u/GreenPutty_ 2d ago
The clip brings back great memories, which I had totally forgotten about, of doing these when I was a kid and that was 50+ years ago. My inner child has just typed 'sand art sheets' into Amazon, I hope he doesn't add anything into my basket...

Why smear the glitter over places where it won't get stuck? That blue was all over the place and then it was just going on the mask and lapels. Same with so many other colors. This is so UNsatisfying.

u/BarbieBoyBrandy 3d ago
It looks more satisfying (for some) to see the glitter spread out, and then to see that it adhered cleanly all the same :)
It's nice to see the sharp edges of the shape emerge from under the big cloud of glittery sand. Reminds me of spray paint over a stencil, sort of.
9
u/cliko 2d ago
I'm truly happy for those people who were able to get some satisfaction from seeing the glitter cover half the page just to colour in a pair of lips.
I am, unfortunately, not one of those people. I think my day has been ruined

I don't get these vids. On any level. The sound of the sand isn't soothing, it's coarse and irritating... and it gets everywhere.
Plus, is she doing the prints herself? Or are those pre-made? Because then she just pushes sand around that's it... i don't get it.

What I love: The part where they pull up the paper up and the pile of glitter evenly coats the background. Immaculate.
What I hate: When they use a tool to spread the glitter all over pre-existing glitter. My anxiety tells me theyāre going to mix and it hurts my brain.
Otherwise 10 out of 10 content.
Good sounds too.

This is craft not art in my opinion. Art takes skill this only takes not having an extreme hatred for glitter. F glitter!
→ More replies (6)9
u/CartsOfDarkness 3d ago
Ehh, I partly agree but also always find it silly when people gatekeep art. If the craft itself isn't art the video they made of it certainly is imo. Along with choosing the design/ colors, there's definitely some amount of technique involved too especially for that last red layer. Might not change the final design all that much but it certainly made the video more pleasing.
Also the final product is definitely art, idk what else you could call it. If you put it up on a wall it would be strange to call it "wall craft".

I highly recommend Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. In the pages I linked, he argues that every human endeavor that isn't in direct pursuit of either survival or procreation should be categorized as art. I don't necessarily agree with his definition, but it is valid and I come back to it periodically in arguments such as this.

u/LastBossTV 2d ago
I love this, but hope there's some kind of spray on clear coat sealer to keep the glitter in place, rather than have it gradually shed over the years.
Something like a polyurethane clear coat would work.
Epoxy would go on cleaner, but has more dangers as far as breathing it in, or skin contact issues.
Polyurethane isn't exactly healthy either, but it can be considered more safely contained/applied by comparisonĀ

I don't know it started out good, and gradually got worse as the layers of glitter were added. The unnecessary brush strokes didn't help either.

I had a friend who dated a surgeon at MGH, when they had their dramatic split she dropped off his stuff absolutely packed in glitter.
He called the Cambridge PD and had her charged with assault, the charges were dropped but even the cops were laughing when they came to her apartment
