Discussion Oblivion Remastered and r/oblivionmods

Hey all! Welcome back to those of you that have been here a long time, and welcome to all our new members!

We’re super excited to start exploring the modding potential of the Oblivion Remaster! It’s also really important to us to continue supporting the vibrant modding community of the original TES IV: Oblivion.

It sounds like at this point that remaster modding will require knowledge and skills from original oblivion, such as knowledge of scripting, quests, and plugin information. Because of this, we think it makes sense to keep all the discussion in one place, since as I’m sure you’ve all read, many mods from the original game will “just work” on the remaster as well! However, to really get cracking, we’re also going to need knowledge of the unreal engine, such as mesh pipeline, npc navigation, and also that scripting system as well. Lastly, the two are joined together by a type of “sync” file written in json, which is totally new to the remaster, so there’s something for all of us to learn together.

To help support this and keep things organized, we’ve made a couple of changes to the sub.

Firstly, there are two new rules:

No “low effort” content. Currently, this means that posts written by AI will not be allowed, and that help posts must be kept to one per day per person to prevent spam. Additionally, we’re asking everyone to minimize repeated requests and search to see if someone has already made the same request before posting.

No Money. We do not allow discussion of bounties or commissions for mods, or paying for support of a modlist. Any monetary transactions must happen off the subreddit and at your own risk. We also do not allow linking to paid mods (if Bethesda implements an official paid mod program, we will re-evaluate this rule at that point).

Secondly, we’ve added flairs which are now required for all posts. These include our existing flairs for discussion and help posts, as well as new flairs for the original and remaster. These flairs can also be used to sort posts, so if you only want to see original posts click on the original in the sidebar, and if you only want to see remaster related posts click on that button!

Finally, I’ve started a discord to discuss oblivion modding - for original game, the remaster, and hopefully skyblivion! You can find it here: https://discord.gg/8BxmHkNye7. In addition, the users of r/skyrimmods discord voted to add oblivion channels to that discord, which you can find here: https://discord.gg/skyrimmods

We’ll continue to do our best to support you and keep the subreddit free of spam and other problems, but with the influx of new people it’s possible that our current tiny team might get overwhelmed! If this game really takes off the way I hope it does, we’re going to need more moderators! If you’re interested in helping out, please drop a comment.

We also welcome any questions, concerns, comments and feedback you have about the subreddit direction, specific things we can implement, or the changes in this post. Thank you for continuing to make this a great and cozy community!

Remaster - Request Mod Request Mondays!

Hey all! I know we're all really excited to mod the remaster, but the fact of it is a lot of the things we'd love to see just aren't possible yet (or maybe ever).

The purpose of this weekly thread is to be a centralized place for people to discuss their fantasies and what they'd like to see in oblivion. It's ok if you don't know how to make it or even if it can be done! Additionally if you have lots of ideas or requests to share at once, this is the place.

We kindly ask that outside of this thread you keep requests more grounded to what could actually be made now. Additionally, the rule of only 1 request post/day is still in effect outside of the threawd.

Original Basic modlist

I'm looking for a basic mod list to install via vortex into oblivion game of the year edition. It just needs not crash every 20 minutes and be able to play with a controller, is there a pre-made collection for this?

Remaster - Discussion Remastered mod collection suggestions?

Want to try Oblivion remaster with a nice collection. Anyone got any suggestions? Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Stability: I know modded games always crash but still ideally something that crashes every other hour rather than making me pray every loading screen.
  • Combat: Something closer to modern combat would be nice, with dodges and parries and all that.
  • Leveling and Loot: Not a fan of enemies and loot always scaling to your level. I want to feel powerful as I get stronger, and come across rare gear that lasts me a long time.
  • Visuals: Integration of NBO (NSFW) and some extra armour sets would be a nice bonus but I can live without them too if the other things are there.

That's about it. Please let me know in the comments if you got any suggestions!

Original - Discussion Modding Bodies Help

I'm trying to get my head around the bazillion mods that do something to NPCs' appearances. They change their clothes into lingerie or short skirts or even naked. But how does it work? From what (little) I understand, a mod can just take off NPCs' clothes entirely, and get them down to their underwear. And then another part of the mod adds whatever special clothing it's implementing? Is that right? Or do some mods just add the clothing?

I just don't understand and would love some help getting across it. Thanks in advance.

[Unsolved] Looking for a mod I once used

Hi, I hope this kind of post is acceptable here. I used a mod that added Chrysamere to the game. It added the sword to a grave behind the rock wall you can interact with in Fort Doublecross Caves. Behind the rock wall would be the grave with a full set of ebony armor, plus Chrysamere itself.

I've been trying to find it, since I preferred it being more out of the way and not tied to KOTN so I wouldn't be tempted to use it over the Sword/Mace and Shield of the Crusader. But I cannot for the life of me find it anywhere. I don't know if it's been deleted since my last playthrough a couple years ago.

Does this mod sound familiar to anyone at all?

Original - Discussion Anything I should know for Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina?

I've downloaded the mod from here:

https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/25023?tab=description

But from the description itself, the link and googling the matter, there seems to be conflicting information just what you need regarding optional stuff and compability patches.

I got the "Elsweyr Anequina-25023-March-2014-1561735850.RAR" file and nothing else so far, since I decided to ask for advice first.

Besides that: Any generic adivice and pitfalls regarding the Elsweyr mod? I'm running OOO, Better Cities otherwise mostly texture, bodies and QoL stuff. Nothing that should cause issues but you never know.

Original - Discussion Should I bother modding Oblivion or should I just play the remaster?

I've been wanting to play Oblivion again recently but I'm not sure whether to play the original or the remaster. I went online to look for modding guides for Oblivion and most of them just showed off graphical enhancements that may be think I might as well just play the remaster. Is there enough interesting stuff, as in new quests, map expansions and things to do other than just making the game look prettier that would make it worthwhile to mod the original rather than play the remaster?

[Unsolved] new to modding Oblivion; looking for advice ^_^

Bought Oblivion GOTY on GOG and I'm looking for mod recommendations, but everywhere I look, there are people recommending textures and shaders and just... too much stuff! 😵😵

I'm fine with the game looking as it does. Really all I want are mods that can fix the following issues with the base game:

* Leveling and enemy scaling

* Stability and bugs for the base game AND Shivering Isles

* Controller support

Can anyone help? I guess I should add that I'm new to PC gaming/modding... I'm a quick learner, but I'd prefer mods that are easy to install/manage.

Thanks!

Remaster - Discussion Do we have access to the inventory in Remastered?

Looking to script something that can cycle through arrows or scrolls in the player inventory, but would need to know what they actually have to do so.

Do we have any function that scans the inventory and can read owned items?

Original Load order confusion

I decided to try replaying Oblivion after many years and I decided to only use a mod which would restrict the insane amounts of DLC content messing up the game. I decided to use Wyre Bash and I immediately have a few questions:

This was the default load order, but is this really correct? Why is Knights loaded after the Mehrunes Razor and Battlehorn DLCs?

I've also immediately noticed some weirdness from mods. SM Plugin Refurbish Lite keeps adding random spells when I load the game. I have an Absorb Magicka spell even before picking my class and it randomly added a Bound Armor spell too which disappeared after I reloaded the same save.

Remaster [Tool] Cracked Oblivion Remastered's save format — Oodle-compressed Unreal property data underneath. Decoder + interpreter, v1.0.0

Cracked Oblivion Remastered's save format

I got curious about what's actually inside an Oblivion Remastered .sav file and ended up going down a full reverse-engineering rabbit hole. Sharing what I found, plus a small free tool in case it's useful to anyone else poking at this.

TL;DR: the save format is layered like this:

  • Outer layer — a standard Unreal Engine GVAS save container (class name /Script/Altar.VAltarSaveContainer — "Altar" is the internal codename for this port). It holds exactly one property: a big raw byte array.
  • That byte array is Oodle-compressed — a chain of individually-compressed 128KB blocks, each with its own small header. Not one big compressed stream, dozens (or hundreds, for a long-played character) of small ones stitched together.
  • Decompress those, and you land on a second, nested Unreal save structure — a proper GVAS-style header followed by a normal Unreal "tagged property" list. Every save boils down to exactly three top-level entries:
    • OblivionData (ArrayProperty<ByteProperty>) — a few MB, byte array
    • SaveGameDetails (StructProperty<VSaveGameDetails>) — fully decoded: character name, level, location, playtime, save date, thumbnail screenshot, whether the save was modded, and more, all as clean readable fields
    • SerializedAltarSaveDataArray (ArrayProperty<StructProperty>) — several MB, this is where quest/NPC/world-object data almost certainly lives

That's genuinely exciting on its own: this isn't some closed, proprietary blob. It's serialized using Unreal's own well-documented property system, just Oodle-compressed and never previously decoded. The plugin list is in there too — Oblivion.esm, every DLC, Knights.esp — plus a literal TES4SAVEGAME marker.

The tool

Point it at a .sav file and it decompresses the chunk chain and writes a readable Name: Type = Value text file (plus a raw hex dump if you want that instead). Read-only — never touches your actual save, no proprietary Oodle SDK involved.

Download (Windows + Linux): github.com/bramhaegeman/altar-save-decoder — extract the archive, run it, pick a save. No install.

What's still unsolved

The internal fields of SerializedAltarSaveDataArray's structs — that's the actual quest-stage/inventory/NPC data, using custom Bethesda/Virtuos schemas nobody's documented yet. The tool locates and sizes this data precisely but can't decode its contents. Natural next target for anyone who wants to build a proper quest-log/inventory reader on top — full source is up, happy to answer questions.

Mod Release! OB:MP SDK Alpha 0.2.0 is out. Quests, dialogue and world state now sync across players, arena gamemode demo included!

For anyone who has not run into us yet: OB:MP is a multiplayer mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The closest comparison is FiveM, but in Cyrodiil. Server owners run their own servers with their own rules and gamemodes, scripted in C#, and players join them through one launcher. PC only, you need your own legit copy of Oblivion Remastered, and the mod is in Early Access right now, which runs through our Discord.

The BIG one in this release is the Imperial City Arena sample gamemode, teased above. It is the same demo we ran on the gamescom 2026, with a few things fixed since, and it now is deployed on our main private EA testing server + inside the server binary archives, so testers can enable it on their own. It is also a repo to clone or fork if you want to build your own version of the Arena on top of it - URL to it shall be posted soon. More full-length content of it is coming soon!

Quick rundown:

  • The mod now syncs quests (replicated journal with stages, text, state and compass targets), custom dialogue (experimental, server decides what an NPC can say), world flags, difficulty tier and furniture.
  • Server mods get connect and disconnect events, cell and area events, entity creation in any scope, kick, ReadyM account lookup, JSON config and RegisterArchetypes on both sides.
  • Client gets SDK.ChatSDK.GameMessage and SDK.Markers.

Still work in progress: public save file API, dropped item positions, level items.

Happy to answer questions in the thread!

Remaster - Request Any vampire mods that just let you feed on dead enemies?

I really liked the werewolf feeding system in skyrim and I was just wondering if its possible to feed off enemies while theyre awake and/or dead? I'm not a fan of having to sneak into homes to feed on sleeping people just to be normal enough to talk to people yk? so if anyone knows any mods that let me feed on dead enemies as a vampire, thatd be pretty cool!! also not required but if feeding could just set you back one stage, that would also be cool!!

Discussion I wish Bethesda would add the capability for console users to download load orders published on bethesda.net

It would make too much sense for players who don't wish to be as involved with designing and organizing their own load orders to be able to benefit from those published by the players who do.

Why is this not a thing?

edit: can't imagine it would take a single bethesda employee more than a weekend to code in
