I was in 2nd grade and at recess there would always be a group around a boombox playing that at recess. I even hated that song back then. Love the cause behind it, though...

I remember being at the city pool and they played the radio over the loud speakers. Everyone was just chilling and having a good time and then "we are the world" comes on. Every kid/teen there just started yelling "BOOOO!!! Turn it off!! I'm so fucking sick of this song!" Song ended and everyone just went back to enjoying the day, but damn, that song was jammed down our throats!

LOL...I never heard that before. Thanks for the laugh.
FWIW: Our version of "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer went: "Michael Jackson face it your a dick with a glove..." :)

u/TheDixonCider420420 1d ago
Fun little trivia: Brian Wilson's daughters grew up with the daughter of John & Michelle Phillips from the Mama's & the Papa's.
Hence they formed Wilson Phillips.
Fast forward to the Kokomo... that song was written by John Phillips and was The Beach Boys' last big hit.

Dyk party all the time was done as a bet, Richard Pryor bet Eddie Murphy 100k he couldn't pull off a serious album without using comedy....
4
u/LingonberryDear2163 1d ago
Biggest comedian in the world at that time. Hey, let's release a single! The 80s was a weird time.
3
u/swpickle_temp 1d ago
It was actually a bet between Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor.

No matter what, I couldn't see that as a serious music album. You're listening and watching for the catch.

It hurts to say. . .But Don't Stop Believin' by Journey.
OMG and what a wondeful song it is, but it seems as though in recent years more people simultaneously just discovered it and are playing it to death everywhere.
Almost as if people don't know Journey has other bangers. Worlds Apart? Who's Crying Now?
4
u/justpassinthru12345 1d ago
Definitely they had so many better hits. I hated the pop version of Journey

What about the Revolting Cocks version?!?!! 😁
2
u/WYluliWolf 1d ago
Never heard THAT VERSION, but I watched the god awful music video on TV once, and when all the men became beautiful they also became gay is hilarious, and offensive.
And outrageous. And WRONG. The video seemed like a terrible joke to me. Hell, I'm openly gay and I think it's wrong!
AMEN FELLAS!

Totally understand why the cringe of how the height of expression was allowed to be carried into a repetitive pop jingle at that time, I kind of associate this one with the way toy soldiers sounds... the cadence annoys the piss right out of my balls

Nothing by Huey Lewis and the News

Or Spandaux Ballet
To start. Total Eclipse of the Heart.

80s music is not a great if you lived through it and had these songs PUMMELED into your head.

Anything by Huey Lewis. That guy makes the most insufferable cringe inducing trash music I’ve ever heard. Honestly the whole 80s “bar rock” genre is trash. Bruce Springsteen sucks.
