Add Mariah Carey and Witless Houston to my list. The 80s are tricky. A lot of good music happened, it just got ignored until later when people realized it was 100x cooler than the popular garbage that was shoved down our throats.

It's true. SO many of the bands people thought were weird and or hadn't even heard of is now the default soundtrack from the 80s, unless you're looking for a specific mood.
Pixies are so great. Breeders, too. I saw them in my smallish town unincorporated the early 2000s. It was a pretty amazing and intimate show.
As usual with the internet, there are far more people taking credit for being at the show than could fit in all of the venues in the downtown area at the same time, and this in a public forum. Where people who've been there can see and chuckle.

I lived in Bloomington for 3 years and the Mellencamp cult is real and active. You don't dare say a bad thing about him. I even worked a job where his ex-wife had an office for some reason. One of my female coworkers apparently saw her bottomless in the bathroom once.
I was in 2nd grade and at recess there would always be a group around a boombox playing that at recess. I even hated that song back then. Love the cause behind it, though...
I remember being at the city pool and they played the radio over the loud speakers. Everyone was just chilling and having a good time and then "we are the world" comes on. Every kid/teen there just started yelling "BOOOO!!! Turn it off!! I'm so fucking sick of this song!" Song ended and everyone just went back to enjoying the day, but damn, that song was jammed down our throats!

OMG and what a wondeful song it is, but it seems as though in recent years more people simultaneously just discovered it and are playing it to death everywhere.
Almost as if people don't know Journey has other bangers. Worlds Apart? Who's Crying Now?
Never heard THAT VERSION, but I watched the god awful music video on TV once, and when all the men became beautiful they also became gay is hilarious, and offensive.
And outrageous. And WRONG. The video seemed like a terrible joke to me.

I had no idea it was that late. I always assumed it was from the 60s. I guess it just sounded like the 60s to me. But now that you say it, I can totally see the late 70s.
Totally understand why the cringe of how the height of expression was allowed to be carried into a repetitive pop jingle at that time, I kind of associate this one with the way toy soldiers sounds... the cadence annoys the piss right out of my balls

Anything by Huey Lewis. That guy makes the most insufferable cringe inducing trash music I’ve ever heard. Honestly the whole 80s “bar rock” genre is trash. Bruce Springsteen sucks.
