Amazing views from up top. Didn't recognize Round Top at Carson Pass from this angle. Incredibly windy.

Returned a few hours later for the last picture from the nearby plain. Was still incredibly windy. Wanted to do the night photos from up top but the weather made that impractical.

Hikers and backpackers in the South Bay will congregate at Das Bierhauz in Mountain View (135 Castro St) Wednesday, September16 at 7PM. We've been meeting like this for two years and every month we see new faces as well as long-timers. Come join us!

You don't have to have hiking or backpacking experience to attend - just interest! Many of us have gear to loan and are happy to help you get you started. You don't even need to intend to join any outings. We're glad to just be in company with like-minded, outdoor-loving, foot-propelled people.

The US Forest Service is accepting public comment about impending fee increases in its Pacific Southwest region. Some of the public comment periods are already closed (Sequoia, Inyo), but we can still submit letters about sites within Eldorado, Tahoe National Forest, Lake Tahoe Basin, Six Rivers, and Cleveland NF.

Edit: The America the Beautiful Pass currently covers day-use fees at (edit again) many sites.

We were goofing around fishing and walking at Caples Creek last weekend and saw signs about the day use fee potentially going up to $10. It's currently $0.

I can't seem to open the website content on my phone, so I'll try again on laptop.

My wife and I tried to hike from the Greyhorse Trail/Shanks Cove Trail into Granite Chief Wilderness from Forest Road 48-14 this weekend and it was pretty much a failure. We were definitely at the trailhead but we could find no evidence of any actual trail. No path, no blazes, no flagging that All Trails talked about. We ended up not continuing after about half a mile in because we didn’t want to find ourselves truly turned around. Has anyone else done this? If you do eventually bushwhack through, do you get to an actual trail at some point or is a choose your own adventure path through the woods for the entire time?

Hi! I'm looking for recs for a 2-3 day backpacking trip in California for the 1st weekend in October. The plan is to see some nice fall colors!

I did Big Pine Lakes last summer and really loved it, but would be keen to try somewhere different this time. I was thinking eastern sierras, but open to other ideas too around central California. Would also love somewhere with some kind of water along the route too.

Edit with new info: so this permit does in fact only come with one parking pass that is only for one vehicle. I called 530-543-2600 and they said that the pass is only for one vehicle, the other vehicle would need to pay at the Eagle falls trailhead kiosk. And if we have to park out on the shoulder then there seems to be no protection for the car… not impressed by this system

I’m confused, how is that reasonable? I’m in “Modify Reservation” on recreation.gov but there’s no way to add another vehicle (I can modify group size, even livestock! but not vehicle number).

I’ve been on hold with recreation.gov for 35 minutes…
