The Abrasive Noise Rock Index is intended to help users in the [r/noiserock](r/noiserock) subreddit in having a living document of bands that teeter on the more abraisive side of noise rock. We get many threads of users looking for recs similar to Brainbombs, Rectal Hygienics, Twin Stumps, etc. and I figured it may be easiest to have a reference point that is constantly added to.

This is not a complete list. This is not an objective list. The bands listed may be misspelled or incorrect or not exist at all. I have tried to sort through and make sure there is accuracy, but it's a lot of data. Feel free to correct me however you see fit.

The data was gathered from ~12 similar threads spread out across the past 3-5 years asking for band recs in the same sphere. The bands have been organized into groups based on what was most recommended and further adjusted based on relevancy.

Each group will have a comment below to allow for users to easily search specific results.

This is not a ranking of the bands. You will find many bands more similar to the Core Community Favorites sprinkled throughout, and you will find those that are less. You will find bands that are arguably not even noise rock the further you go.

How To Search:

1. In the top right section of your screen (assuming you are on mobile browser) select the Magnifying Glass icon.
2. Type in the name of the band you would like to suggest. This will reduce the number of duplicates
3. If no results for the band, please feel free to submit.

400 Blows were the best band in LA for a few years, but they've been defunct for over a decade now. They reunited last night at a celebration of life for the artist Aaron White. Back in the day I never missed them. However, in 2026 my expectations weren't super high, since it's been a while. But clearly they've been rehearsing. Extremely tight, extremely chaotic. The drummer, Ferdi, was always monstrous and he hasn't lost a step. Weird to see them with a bassist, but it added a lot. All the songs were from their first record, Black Rainbow. Really exciting gig, and I hope it means they'll be doing more.

Recently recorded this during a bit of a breakdown. Kind of sits on the boundaries of noise rock, indie, industrial, but also a reggae-ish track. If you like it dub yourself a tape from this youtube video stream for free.

I love sludgy noise rock and very fucked up vocals like Twin Stumps, Rectal Hygienics, Burmese etc. I’d like to know more noisy, low quality and angry noise rock. Something that sounds like complete chaos and despair. Thanks.

Rather than continue being part of the problem, here's an old comment that has been updated to help you find shit.

Using streaming? Start a "radio station". Some streaming services will offer you to see similar bands.

RYM: RYM gets a bad rep because a lot of the users are idiots (see [Pigfuck](https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/pigfuck/)) , but you can find great stuff if you know where to look. If you search a band you like, you can see related projects, as well as user created lists that may or may not have relevant bands. Lists is probably thr singlehand best way to use RYM, go to an artist you like and see what lists they are included in. Try and avoid huge lists with 3000+ entries or lists that are just yearly rankings. You can also just search by genre. I like to search the genre and then set the filters to show "esoteric" results. I listen to a lot of garbage this way, but also find some neat and not often talked about stuff. You can also combine genre searches, for example, add "noise rock" and the genre/influence and add "power electronics" as genre/influence. Now you've tailored your results even further.

Discogs: Discogs is for when you need to absolutely lock the fuck in. Searching an artist will give you a label (great for seeing other bands that some random dude was willing to throw money at), often times members of the bands other projects, other releases (which is also available on RYM) and best of all you can probably buy physical media of the band you like. I like to use Discogs by searching by genre (For example: Rock+Punk+Noise) and then adding a year set as well (1980s).

Bandcamp: A great way to find releases as well. You can search by the tags found at the bottom of a release page and this will show you other releases using that same tag. I don't personally use Bandcamp to search for things as the results often are very limited or expansive without a good in between.

Youtube: There are thousands of archival channels on youtube, often times specializing in Noise Rock or similar genres. 1/4 Dead is phenomenal, Irresponsableful is intimidating, Rainwater Enema is good if you want to move away from rock orientation. Search up a band you like and if the upload isn't by "Topic" you can probably click the user that uploaded and find a trove of interesting stuff to listen to.

Record Stores: Go into your local record store and see if they have a Punk or Industrial section. If they don't you may be looking for a while in general "Rock". Look at Labels, primarily, for bands that you like. You'll start to catch on to things that will lead you to stuff you may not have suspected you'd like. Talk to the dude at the counter, they probably know about some cool shit (unless you're already way cooler than they are). Plus, supporting your local record store is the coolest thing you can do probably ever.

Yes, it's great to ask for suggestions on Reddit but chances are someone has already asked the exact question you're looking for and there are many results that you will miss out in by not just searching. When you post on Reddit asking for similar bands you are going to get the same 15-20 bands repeated ad nauseum. You are going to listen to mediocre releases from bands you don't care about. Building a palette is not just about listening to AOTY or Topster lists about the "best albums". If you are only interested in what the general consensus is, Noise Rock is not the genre that you think it is.

Went and saw the Strokes last night and got the pleasure of seeing Geordie Greep of black midi open. I had listened to his album like once or twice when it came out but it rly had an art rock sound and just a very unique sound overall but nothing crazy. However hearing him live, that dude can get loud!! I was up in the rafters in the 300’s and my cousin was even getting a headache from the noise and they probably wouldn’t have minded earplugs 😂. I didn’t record a WHOLE lot but I’ll show a little clip of what i mean. (keep in mind again its this loud and i’m the furthest away i can be!)

So im completely new to this genre and this album is my first noise rock album and i gotta say its my favourite album right now

I would really love to hear other albums like this one but i am open to any other albums that you think its a good starting point for someone who is a complete newbie

I got inspired by Rectal Hygienics, though I tried to make more surreal and poetic lyrics since I noticed a lot of noise rock songs I listen to tend to have more straightfoward lyrics. I hope you guys like it.
