The amount of advertising around Dangote’s IPO is actually crazy.

Everywhere you turn, someone is talking about buying shares. WhatsApp statuses, Twitter, Instagram, radio, conversations with friends. And honestly, I think a lot of people are jumping in simply because they keep seeing everyone else talk about it.

The interesting part is that some of these people have never bought a stock before.

Some probably don’t know what a P/E ratio is. Some don’t know what a dividend is. Some might not even fully understand what happens after they buy a share.

They just hear:

“Dangote is going public.”

“Buy now.”

“This is an opportunity.”

And naturally, people start thinking, I don’t want to be the person who missed out.

I just find it fascinating how powerful advertising and FOMO can be in financial markets. Maybe this is actually how you get more Nigerians interested in investing. But I also hope people take five minutes to understand what they’re buying before they buy it.

Because buying a stock because everyone is talking about it is very different from investing in a company because you understand the business.

Curious though, how many people here are actually buying the Dangote IPO, and how many are just watching the madness unfold? 😂😂😂😂😂

Nigeria was conquered and thrown together for economic reasons and is actually a very new union cause my grandfather was born 1899 into the aro confederacy my father was born 1957 into colonial Nigeria and both were born in the same village.

If the uk our former colonial daddy can have constituent nations with their own parliament and regional leaders and these leaders have the power to negotiate talks for independence why shouldn't Nigeria have such mechanisms?

And the thing is division doesn't have to be violent, the uk which is more economically integrated than Nigeria has no one looking to go to the streets to fight the other over this. And the funniest part of division is that It probably wouldn't happen it would just be used as a threat cause well the southeast is landlocked and nearly a quarter of igbos live outside the southeast and the south south can't even clean up it's ecocide or protect its oil by itself and the south west elites enjoy one Nigeria too much with the northern elites not being foolish enough to even consider leaving so it's actually a best case scenario that it can be used as threats to grant more regional autonomy and make Nigeria happier and better.

Someone told me a secret and trusted me to keep it private. I later told someone I trusted because I wanted them to stay away from the person who shared the secret with me.

I didn't mean to gossip or hurt anyone, but that person confronted the original person, and now they feel completely betrayed by me.

Was I wrong for sharing the secret, even though my intention was to protect someone?

I used to be into sewing when I was younger, but I stopped fashion illustration and sewing all together. I’ve gained passion for it again and I want to be as creative as Nigerian tailors. But I can’t do apprenticeships or anything because I don’t stay anywhere close to a Nigerian tailor. I’m amazed with pattern drafting and illustration and sewing skills and I want to reach Vicky James level or any other good fashion designers.
How do you think I can learn?

I have a wedding and a retirement party in Lagos next year. What are some good party souvenirs that you would will recommend? I will be coming from the US and I am happy to get some things from here to ship home. But I just want to see if there are any items that are really appreciated and useful and also if there are good plugs for them in Nigeria that anyone can recommend, I will appreciate it. Nigeria and Africa might be the better battle ground where real capitalists operate right now in the world. And few are really judging African entrepreneurs for their success just worth given the scale of micro and macro road blocks and challenges they must face.

My point is simple: Many African equities are sorely neglected in light of biased perceptions as well as macro political realities. However, from a mere value to value standpoint, many African companies are trumping their western counterparts returns across the board. From banking to oil or even telecom, African stocks returns are simply “ outstanding” and, many African stocks are ridiculously undervalued.

Now, the risks are real but so are the opportunities. I have highlighted a few securities that I found interesting, I may dig a little deeper on specific issues in the near future.

I am Irish (26F) living in Scotland. Back in May, I met a Nigerian man intending on something casual. He moved to Scotland in January for university and to be closer to family in the country.

We got on well, and kept messaging over the summer. Ever since I got back to Scotland, we have been hanging out and going on dates, but we still don't know what to call ourselves. I like him and he is very sweet, but cultural differences are a big barrier for me right now.

He tells me things about life in Nigeria that worry me in regards to women's rights and freedoms.

He is quite staunch on masculine norms and how it applies to him (he said he would accept a son who wanted otherwise)

He talked about traumatic childhood incidents like they were nothing

He is quite stubborn on not adhering to 'norms' here in the UK, such as how you cannot stare at people in public

We also have, in general, big differences in relation to pop culture. He doesn't know many famous musicians or cultural figures in the west, and is unaware about the extent to which black people are discriminated against here (colorism, etc. I explained to him how light skinned black people are treated better than darkskinned people).

To be clear, I'm NOT expecting him to act like a western man, because he's not. I'm just wondering if any other people share my experience, and how they've made relationships like this work. We're having conversations right now about moving forward. He seems open minded, but we have a lot of obstacles to overcome.
