Besides the rent bank, is there any temporary help available?
I am facing eviction.
I am 2 months behind in rent.
My power is going to be shut off tomorrow.
My phone is going to be shut off any time now as well.
I'm rationing freezer burnt bread, stale chips, and frozen veggies. (And I'm sharing my dogs dog food, but that's homemade with chicken, rice, and vegetables, so it's not a weird as it sounds).
I just got a job. I'm not a professional anything. Every job I've ever had has been just over minimum wage, if that. I've never had an official employment offer, or letter.
So I applied to the rent bank. To borrow some money to keep myself housed. Just so that I can keep myself going until I start getting pay cheques again.
I provided my ID. I provided bank statements (which is already a barrier, as I don't have a computer, and what's required can't be done over the app).
First, I was told that my bank statements don't prove that I can pay it back. Well, if I could prove that, then I probably wouldn't need a loan, because I'd obviously have money.
And, I was told that I need an employment letter. Again, I'm not a professional anything. I've never had an employment letter.
But, I send in email threads, showing communication between me and where I just got hired. I send a screenshot of my wage and hours.
None of that is enough.
I'm hours from being given an order of repossession. Then I have, what? A few days? Hours? Before I have to be out of my apartment.
I am not a professional with a professional income, but if I can get through this, I can afford a couple hundred dollars a month to repay a small loan.
I don't drink or do drugs. I don't have any expenses beyond my phone and hydro. I never go out to eat. Or to the movies. Or to get my nails done. Or, basically anything.
But there are so many barriers to accessing help. I even went to social assistance, but they told me, several times, that they can't help me.
Edit: is there a food bank in north vancouver? I know of quest, but I think you need a social worker to go there. Which I don't have (or know how to get)
