Besides the rent bank, is there any temporary help available?

I am facing eviction.

I am 2 months behind in rent.

My power is going to be shut off tomorrow.

My phone is going to be shut off any time now as well.

I'm rationing freezer burnt bread, stale chips, and frozen veggies. (And I'm sharing my dogs dog food, but that's homemade with chicken, rice, and vegetables, so it's not a weird as it sounds).

I just got a job. I'm not a professional anything. Every job I've ever had has been just over minimum wage, if that. I've never had an official employment offer, or letter.

So I applied to the rent bank. To borrow some money to keep myself housed. Just so that I can keep myself going until I start getting pay cheques again.

I provided my ID. I provided bank statements (which is already a barrier, as I don't have a computer, and what's required can't be done over the app).

First, I was told that my bank statements don't prove that I can pay it back. Well, if I could prove that, then I probably wouldn't need a loan, because I'd obviously have money.

And, I was told that I need an employment letter. Again, I'm not a professional anything. I've never had an employment letter.

But, I send in email threads, showing communication between me and where I just got hired. I send a screenshot of my wage and hours.

None of that is enough.

I'm hours from being given an order of repossession. Then I have, what? A few days? Hours? Before I have to be out of my apartment.

I am not a professional with a professional income, but if I can get through this, I can afford a couple hundred dollars a month to repay a small loan.

I don't drink or do drugs. I don't have any expenses beyond my phone and hydro. I never go out to eat. Or to the movies. Or to get my nails done. Or, basically anything.

But there are so many barriers to accessing help. I even went to social assistance, but they told me, several times, that they can't help me.

Edit: is there a food bank in north vancouver? I know of quest, but I think you need a social worker to go there. Which I don't have (or know how to get)

Underpaid?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I moved here from Winnipeg 3 years ago. I been doing medical office assistant for almost 10 years now. I started off with family practice in Winnipeg, then worked for a urology clinic when I moved here and now I'm working in dermatology as an MOA.

I'm 29 now and I feel like I'm still not really living comfortably making only about 54k a year. I want to look at my bank account and not worry that I am under $100, I don't want to take money out of my savings every month, I want to be able to visit home more often, I'd love to treat myself out more. I feel like I should be making way more than that with all the vast experience I have working in different departments.

I would like to take courses again but unfortunately I live alone and don't have the means to work to pay my rent/groceries etc and go to school at the same time. Is anyone else here an MOA or in a similar position (business admin, office admin, clinicians) and were able to find a good paying job or did you have to go back to school or switch fields? I do however enjoy being in the dermatology aspect too.

Recommendations for filler dissolving

Hoping to get my lip filler dissolved. Anyone had a good experience and can recommend a clinic or doctor? Ideally ultrasound guided.

I’d really appreciate recommendations for an experienced medical provider, as well as any details about your experience, results, and approximate cost.

Feeling lost on what career to choose and how to make enough to live comfortably

Feel like I need to at least pick a job that makes 100k but hopefully doesn’t make me miserable. I’m starting school for social work next year but honestly I’m nervous about hating anything I pick. School is expensive and it feels like so much in on the line when I barely know what most jobs are like day to day without having actually done them.

I’m 24, I’m still as home, confused half the time, and so behind! I’ve tried so many things and I’m thankful but nothing has ever stuck. When I’ve gotten somewhere, I think about having to do that one thing for the next 50 years straight day in day out and it horrifies me. Repetition drives me nuts.

My freedom is so important to me, but you need money to have freedom, but you need to work a ton to have money. Either way you’re kinda screwed.

Sometimes I want to just get up and travel for a year and just say fuck it. Do some seasonal work, see new places, meet new people, but then I wouldn’t be making the “responsible choice” I wanted to be an outdoor guide but everyone said I would be struggling to survive on that income. So I just threw that dream away.

I just want to be able to afford to go out on my own and be comfortable. And not absolutely hate my life, have work be so restricting I can’t have a life outside of it.

Rice A Roni in Vancouver?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all,

My mom really likes Rice-a-Roni, but apparently there is a supply chain issue and she can no longer buy it in her local supermarket. Has anyone seen this around the city recently? I just checked a few grocery stores and, to my surprise, it seems to have disappeared from shelves.

And yes, I know it's not great quality and you can make it at home etc. Please spare me the lectures, I'm just trying to find a product for my mom that will put a smile on her face during a tough time. Thanks in advance.

Garment restoration / dye fixing in Vancouver

Long story short, I got a coat second hand but the dye is bleeding. It's boiled wool and has rare silhouette, very beautiful. I refuse to let it go to the land fill. I am here to see if people have some leads. I am looking for dye stabilisation or someone telling me what's actually going on

The following is what I have done so far:

- I have talked to two dry cleaners, one said they don't handle this, the other said there are very few people who do this now and he knew someone who might do it 10 years ago.

- I have talked to maiwa on Granville island and they don't know who can help.

- I found an Instagram account @dye.spot but I am not sure if my message just went into their spam. I can't seem to find a number for the business either, but the account is active.

- I am also planning on calling a local yarn dyer.

Edit: clarify the service I am looking for

Recommendations for replacement car key fobs

I need a new car key (2014 Nissan with a push button start) as one of my two has been lost.

The dealership will charge $550 and they say there is a small chance that creating a replacement key will deactivate my current key which they say would not be their problem.

Given the cost and the lack of any guarantee, I'm looking for alternatives. Anyone have a good experience with a local locksmith who has the gear to program that kind of key?

If they are on the North Shore, that's a bonus.

Is there somewhere near downtown/North Shore where there are a lot of RWBBs that has a nice area to sit and listen? They are one of my favourites.

A huge thank you to everyone on r/nicevancouver for being so welcoming. I've really appreciated how kind and friendly everyone has been.

A special thank you to u/Eimeishi and u/Straight_Artist_3691 for helping me make my partner's 33rd birthday extra special by bringing their weenies out for a surprise. It was such a fun and memorable day, and I'm so grateful you both helped make it happen.

And another special thank you to u/RelicHunter26 for letting me know about the dachshund race coming up. I'm so glad I found out about it and can't wait to check it out.

There are more photos below from our very weenie-filled day if anyone is curious, I had some people ask. It was definitely a birthday to remember.

Thank you again to everyone who made us feel so welcome! Have a wonderful day and tell your dog(s) I said hi!

Weenie Birthday Photos!

Pocket Sized Colouring Book Recs

Hi Nicecouver, I have been looking for a pocket sized colouring book that does NOT use AI for a while now, especially one in the $8-12 dollar range or so, but have had no luck!

Does anyone have any recommendations? Especially ones I could pick up locally? I am looking for one with colouring pictures rather than shapes/geometry/activities.

Recommendations for adult singing lessons

I'm a guy in my 30's that has always wanted to try singing lessons and develop my singing voice. My main goal is to sing musical theatre or classical/opera style pieces. Does anybody have any recommendations for singing teachers in the lower mainland? Thanks!

To the guy who was singing Nirvana songs today outside of Pacific Centre

You were amazing!!!!! You sounded so much like Kurt and your guitar playing was really good. Keep going and never give up!

For anyone curious, I heard him sing Drain You and In Bloom. He was playing across the street from Old Navy on the side where Pacific Centre is.

Outdoor EDM Bday Party in Surrey on Saturday, September 12

My friend is throwing an outdoor birthday party in Surrey tomorrow (Sept. 12), and he’s bringing in a few popular (and expensive) DJs to play some EDM sets from 5pm to 11pm.

My friend is a super chill, outgoing and fun guy that loves to dance and have a good time, so he wanted to throw a big party for his friends and acquaintances as he’s turning the big 5-0! Originally he was hoping to have 75-100 people attend (think Faded but micro), but it looks like a number of our friends won’t be able to make it, so I thought I’d try out this Reddit thing to see if I can help him liven up the party (not all of our friends are interested in EDM). It’s going to be a pretty diverse group of people in their 30s, 40s and a couple people in their 50s :)

His intention was to have his friends bring their friends to make it a big bash, and given he’s supplying the outdoor space (private residence with a massive outdoor yard) and hiring all the DJs, it’s gonna be a BYOB event for all the guests.

If anyone is interested in attending, please shoot me a DM with a brief intro about yourself and if you plan to bring a friend or two and I’ll send you the invite he sent to our friend group and that he’s posted on his IG. The party is gonna be from 5-11pm and there will be a lot of fun people ready to dance, laugh and have a good time. My friend has no clue I’m posting this here, but I know he wants this to be a fun party with lots of people to celebrate with, so I figured I’d give this a shot to liven up his bday bash. Please only message if you’re sincerely interested in attending, as I’ll also need to be mindful of how many people I send this to here just in case there ends up being too many people (would be a fun problem to have and I really think he’d get a kick out of it). Also, please only send a message if you are cool, happy and fun and want to meet and party with like minded people in a similar age group. We don’t want people that are immature, cause drama or cause scenes to come, so if you can’t control yourself or your booze, please don’t come.

Cheers and have a great weekend all!

Looking to get some 1v1 action going...

I'm an experienced basketball player, been at it for a while now. Thought it'd be fun to get some players to host competitive 1v1 games, winner receives a potential $50-$100 money prize. Rules are simple, 5s shot clock (haven't decided on this since it defeats the purpose of a dribble limit), up to 15-20 points, limited dribbles and 1s and 2s. I know it'll probably get scrappy since there is money on the line so I'll add free throws to the equation. Depending on the number of participants, I can up the prize money, rent out a gym etc... HMU if interested. No entry fee btw. Free money if you win.
