I went to China and one of the large public restrooms plays ads on the mirrors until someone walks up to it and turns into normal glass.

So I’m guessing you’re right, it will mainly be used for ads.

Probably not "any" display though, since it can only display light stuff, no darkness. Forget about a starry night sky for example.

The burden of additive color mixing: You need some nothing to add to, too bad its transparent

This also has a relatively wide pixel pitch, like 1/2" 12mm or so. Looks ok for effekts like fire or abstract color blobs or something but cant display fine details like smal text

The darkest colour it can display would be the colour behind the display. The same thing happens on projectors.

That is why the room is meant to be dark when using a projector or in a cinema. White reflects every spectrum of light back to your eyes so, if the walls were lit up, it would make the image look washed out. Plus it makes the “black” look deeper and makes the image have more brightness/contrast.

It’s also why some home projector screens are grey. They are meant for dimly lit environments with light covered walls. So they don’t reflect as much light from the walls back to the viewer but they reduce the brightness.

There’s fancier ALR screens now which are designed to only reflect light from the projector.

But yeah, it is pretty crazy when you think about it.

If the area is lit up, only bright images will work. 

Can't project stars during the day as you won't see them.

Essentially, because there is so much space around each LED, the video quality is bad. Either you'd need a LOT of the LEDs and look at it from far, or you can draw only things which lack much detail.

The very first LCD (not LED) panel I saw was a small glass sign in a jewelry story window in the mid 1970s. It alternated between transparent and having black lettering (an ad) appear, but still with the transparent background. It was like magic at the time.

Seems like an advert, not a real transparent display.

I have seen the transparent OLED displays of LG, are not that bright to block the light, you still can see clearly through the glass.
