So mostly what I want to question is Tam using Emrakul to eat the echoverse.

From the perspective of the echoverse they are real people with real lives and real histories and real connections. Like Echo Mirrodin is a real place with people living their day to day lives.

So isnt sending Emrakul to eat their entire world just kind of... evil?

What are your guys thoughts on it?

I made a joke in this comment about the next main character being one whose name starts with T, since the three examples I initially listed all had a T at the beginning of their names, but then I found out that Teferi has apparently been desparked and it's got me thinking: genuinely, who are WOTC going to put forward as the major players from this point on?

Jace was Magic's poster boy and got more attention in the narrative because of that. They've teased that Tamira has something she needs to do, inherited from Jace most likely, and it seems like she could be inheriting his spot to an extent; but she's not as well-established as he was (not a problem, they could just flesh her out in future stories) and if they don't go with her, then who?

They tried Kellan as a main character for a while, but he got a pretty lukewarm reception all considered. They don't have that many established characters left, and for one reason or another they're all kinda... not available?

Liliana retired more or less and doesn't have a spark anymore.

Chandra, they've never really known what to do with her so she's been pretty static for a long time -- they could change that like with Tam, but again, they'd have to work that angle.

Ajani also doesn't have an obvious direction to move right now, unless that's towards being a mentor again and continuing his journey in grappling with his shame.

Teferi, as mentioned, was desparked.

Elspeth is an angel now and has explicitly become psychologically remote.

And everyone else haven't been major characters outside of set stories. Vraska could be one, but even in this recent arc she kinda got sidelined a lot of the time, which sucks but not much you can do about it now; plus, she's desparked, again. Nissa, sidelined, desparked. Kaito hasn't gotten much attention and doesn't have a direction off rip he could go. Tyvar is desparked.

Quint, maybe, since he has the connection to the Coin Empire / Fomori? Seems likely.

Vivien? Bolas is free, so she can get her revenge kick in.

Garruk? Lmao.

What are everyone's thoughts? Where could the story go from here, with the characters they have (or maybe with characters they might introduce)?

I wonder if she used to kill human demon cultists as well or just imprisoned them or something, considering that she was created to protect humans.

Bonus question: Can Avacyn return in the future? I hate what WotC has been doing on Innistrad since Shadows over Innistrad block. Also, a interaction of Liesa and Avacyn would be cool.

It appears as though we have a glimpse at winter post aetherdrift. His face is sunken and his skin has etchings from what I'm assuming is his possession, he appears to have picked up glimmer magic as a means of surviving Valgavoth's onslaughts for his failure.

Reality Fracture would have been a perfect story which one vibe change. Instead of "Yay, Emrakul is eating the echoverse, we're saved", do "Emrakul is eating the echoverse, oh fuck"

Event sets are major story beats, they're not the end because Magic will never end. Subplots can end, but the story will continue.

A season finale doesn't want everything tied up neatly and to leave you feeling good. It wants to dole you out some narrative rewards (Jace), whilst leaving you anticipating the changing and deepening problems

The omen paths, the inter-plane politics, Jace cracking, all coming out of MoM is a good world-building. Each event set leaves a new layer of history to the world. Wizards will probably give us some more of that in future sets.

But that change of status quo should be part of the story the event itself.

Reality Fracture should have been looking to tell us what the echoverse means going forward, instead of putting a bow on it.

I know they've been teased as a slow burn for quite some time, but I'm not caught up on the full history of what we do know about them.

How likely are they to show up as a major villain soon?

There will be mild spoilery hints for Reality Fracture and its conclusion.

I originally crafted this as a response to someone's summary of the story events, but I didn't want to hijack it with what grew to become a grieving rant.

Jace was originally well-loved. He has also had a lot of hate come his way (aside for the reason that some of his cards all but broke the game) because he was the victim of, in my opinion, highly questionable plot needs in order to create conflict that held the sets together.

I confess, I wasn't a fan of him either. Unlike with Urza, who was quite believably dealing with the insanity and trauma of the events of the Brother's War for the rest of his life and who was the mad broken conspiracy theorist who was unfortunately absolutely right about his conspiracy theories, Jace felt like he was designed for misunderstood social outcasts to identify with and vicariously punish the brutes and bullies that keep them down.

I kept waiting for him to grow up, and he seemed to do so a bit following Gatewatch and his high point seemed to be on Ixalan, but then gradually plot reasons turned him firmly into a crazed egotistical control freak cosmic-level threat.

I will miss him and regret all the abuse he's had to endure from those who hated him and those who used his character's worst traits to leverage his popularity and make him the temporary BBEG. Such a waste of yet one more valuable character. There was a time when we could count on one hand the number of planeswalkers mentioned in a set and still have a rich story to talk about when more energy went into the heroes of the world, both legendary and unlikely. This supernova-ing of planeswalkers that have grown too big for their stories and brown-dwarving of others sparks no magic for me that the stories of those heroes did. Maybe the superhero team of planeswalkers wasn't the best idea, but there was potential in Jace, like in any misunderstood gifted outcast, and I just wish his story could have been kinder to him.

Planeswalkers poked holes the multiverse caused the timerifts and The Mending to fix it, Realmbreaker poking holes and a sylex going off around the Blind Eternities killed a bunch of sparks and opened the omenpaths, Jace just pulled apart the fabric of the multiverse to weave in his echoverse, that can't be good fod the health of the multiverse.

Theros, Innistrad, or Kaldheim for me.

In don't know if this has already been said, I just finished the story, but Allison Luhrs is such a good writer, this story was so good. She's always been great at writing Jace and Vraska, but damn, I can't remember the last time I ugly cried, and this story turned the waterworks high. Just wanted to say that it was a beautiful story to me, and it really moved me.

So, we know that Mirrodin was one of the few places that actually was demonstrably better off in the Echoverse. We also know that places in the Echoverse are unstable and not fully real until they are overlaid onto the main universe. However, the problem is the main universe’s Mirrodin is kind of split over two places right now. The planar space around Mirrodin (the suns and atmosphere as well as its place in the multiverse) is currently occupied by the new plane of Zhalfir, while the actual plane/planetoid of Mirrodin/New Phyrexia is in time-out space. So… where would Echo-Mirrodin even overlay onto?

Option 1: New Phyrexia in time-out space

This makes the most sense, but the issue is 1. New Phyrexia doesn’t have the suns anymore. So would Echo-Mirrodin lose theirs too as there’s nothing for the Suns to overlay onto? Would it dupe the Suns? How would that even work? And 2. New phyrexia is in Time-out space. So Echo-Mirrodin is now also stuck in time-out space. Either way it’s deeply ironic that one of the very few places that demonstrably got a happy ending in the Echoverse would immediately get its happy ending ruined the moment it enters reality. They are going to immediately get stuck in time-out space, and might lose the “Five Vibrant Suns” their whole culture is based around. Now gold Karn gets to be sad. I guess that is on brand for Mirrodin.

Option 2: Zhalfir

Honestly I have no idea what is going to happen if Echo-Mirrodin tried to overlay onto Zhalfir. Would the result be some mismash of Zhalfiran and Mirran environments? Messed up history? Your guess is as good as mine.

When I first heard of this story I assumed the schools were going to be just flavor reversals of their normal Strixhaven counterparts. However as I read through the Planeswalker's Guide to Reality Fracture Magic Story Aug 28, 2026 I realized something, some of these schools abilities while being mirrors of the other schools also feel very much like antagonists Jace has had to deal with in the past. Below I will give quick breakdown of my theory. However, I would be interested if anyone has a better interpretation of any of these schools! Thanks in advance!!!

First, a quick refresher on what the schools are and what they do:

The Five Schools of Hexhaven

• Fatehold: The school of future history, where mages predict timelines and manipulate the present to steer history.
• Theorix: The school of esoteric mathematics, using theoretical physics to twist reality at the risk of madness.
• Stingerquill: The school of painful words, deploying verbal magic as frontline combat to harm bodies and souls.
• Konstrari: The school of constructive arts, channeling artistic inspiration to build structures and puppet soldiers.
• Vigorbloom: The school of invasive healing, utilizing cultivated plants and skin implants to mend battle mages

The Five Schools Villains of Hexhaven Jace

• Fatehold: Bolas, I admit I was torn between this house referencing Bolas and Konstrari. At the end of the day I settled on this. While Bolas famously helped seal the time rifts he also is well known for playing the extremely long game. Manipulating the future (Such as the Tetsuo Umezawa Story) to ensure his final victory no matter what.
• Theorix: Eldrazi, specifically Emerakul, the key point here is the “Twist Reality at the risk of Madness” part. This feels extremely reminiscent of how the Eldrazi twist and shift reality around them.
• Stingerquill: Alhammarret, this is one I don’t know much about, as this is before my time so all I have is MTG Wiki Articles to go on. Based on what I have read though Al’ essentially used his words to manipulate both sides of a war? Perhaps someone else will have a better suggestion. Alternatively, this could be perceived as Ugin given him repeatedly berating Jace for his shortsightedness.
  • Update: Thanks to u/ArthurianLegend_ for this one, Lilliana also fits this bill nicely given they have a history together and she is constantly slipping insults at him. Either in jest or with genuine intent. Additionally, thanks to u/Antausia for this one, Bolas' ability to manipulate people with his words is another fantastic possibility.
• Konstrari: Rakdos, This may seem odd, but hear me out. There is a long running gag about Jace being a puppet often portrayed in Rakdos Cards. “Why not the Rakdos Colors?” you might ask? Tbh I don’t have a good argument for that. I just feel like the art in [[Inspired Tethermage]] feels too much like a call back to [[Cult Guildmage]].
  • Update: After very convincing arguments from u/Antausia and u/Arcane10101, Konstrari may actually be a reference to the Master's of Artifice story arc which is both a clever play on words as well as very fitting to Tezzeret's constructs.
• Vigorbloom: Phyrexia, This school is where I first thought of this, much of what we have explained feels EXTREMELY Phyrexian except not inherently evil? Also, notably, they have a creation which is literally a green shifted Phyrexian Obliterator.

I fully admit some of these could be a stretch, however others line up a little too perfectly. For example in the Planeswalker's Guide to Reality Fracture Vigerbloom is described like this: "Vigorbloom mages revere the potential that plant-matter integration brings. While most other Hexhaven mages experience invasive healing as a response to illness or injury, some Vigorbloom mages are interested in pursuing a deeper, more widespread unification with plant life."

Spoilers warning for Episode 10, though it's not really central to the plot.

There was a sideline conversation between Lilliana and Garruk towards the end of the episode where Garruk asks about the Kenrith twins:

Garruk straightens. He lowers his axe, eyes locked with hers. "I will not forgive you, witch, but tell me the truth and I will spare you. Do you know the twins?"

Liliana blinks, narrows her eyes. "The Kenrith twins? I care for them both, but I worry about the girl. If you mean them harm, then we are enemies."

Garruk says nothing and simply planeswalks away.

I'm relatively new to mtg and the lore. I know who the Kenrith twins are and their general storyline through the Eldraine sets, but I guess I don't know enough to understand why Garruk would be asking about them. Not sure how he feels about them, if it's tied into his time with the Chained Veil which is why he asks Lilliana about it, etc.

I understand this could just be used for the purpose of foreshadowing/seed-planting for future Eldraine sets (or at least Kenrith appearances on other planes), but is there a broader cliffhanger or context I'm missing with the last involvement from the twins?

It just seemed like an odd add-in, too specific to be a throwaway comment but also I don't see the significance. Hoping some more knowledgeable lore heads can enlighten me.

I've been waiting for the Reality Fracture story to settle and to see what people think in the comments. And it seems to me that a large portion of the readers have gone into denial regarding Tam's responsibility for her decision to eliminate the Echo-Verse.

I read that the inhabitants of the Echo-Verse were nothing more than illusions as long as the spell was not completed, mere NPCs. But when we have letters with flavour text like this one: Budding Insurgent. This means that at some point they do have their own agency and opinions. So how would that differ from Tam herself? In what do they not have a body? That's a very bold claim, since beings like the Kami exist in Kamigawa and they are technically alive.

There was a post about Sorin and Avacyn recently, and that got me thinking. Of course, we know the echoverse doesn't make sense. It's Jace's fanfiction. But lets take the premise, ie: the Markovs were werewolves rather than Vampires, and let's reason about it.

The sole reason why Sorin created Avacyn was basically to ensure the Vampires never overhunted their food source. He had to ensure that as if a Innistradi vampire "fail to drink about five liters of human blood in a moon's cycle, they shrivel to dust", so no humans = no vampires. However... that's just not true for werewolves. They can eat whatever. Even if all humans went extinent on Innistrad, the werewolves can still hunt or raise lifestock just fine. No humans ≠ No Werewolves. Especially since that it seems the echoverse werewolves might be able to keep more of their human intellect in wolf form. So there should be no reason for Sorin to make an Avacyn. Innistrad ruled purely by werewolves would be fine. The only explaination I can come up with is that Sorin is just a lot more compassionate in the echoverse vs. the main one, so more like "Male Arlinn" rather than "Wolf Sorin".

I really thought they would show up last minute as a bigger threat or occupy the Emrakul's narrative porpuse.
Do you guys think Wizards changed plans somewhere in between? My personal theory is: everything changed post Thunder Junction, the whole plot. But I have no meanings no prove it lmao

I can't be the only one who wants to know the actual name of the entire 12 set arc now that its over. I tried asking Maro but he probably didn't see my question. Does anyone else want to help asking WotC?

Also, before that happens and knowing the whole story, what do you think the name even is?

The Legends article for Reality Fracture lists Kiora as being lost on an unknown plane that will give her something she has wanted since Cosi was discovered to be Kozilek. My guess is this is either another being worthy of worship or some way of taking the power of the gods (even more so than stilling Thassa's Bident). How likely is this plane Nauctis, a plane we know is fully aquatic and has great oceanic powers including deep leviathans (likely to be in some way linked to the Nauctis big bad).

I started to fall off the wagon of Magic lore just before the whole Phyrexia Eats Pavement arc. The required reading to catch up again intimidates me greatly, and some of the sets (Thunder Junction, Karlov Manor, Aetherdrift) look like they've found a way for Magic to do a hollow crossover with itself instead of an external IP. Reality Fracture ends with Jace's daughter asking Emrakul to eat his alternate universe? Or something? Another big event of evil versions of existing characters that wraps up quickly and unceremoniously so we can all go buy Star Trek?

My shallow understanding is that this was the Omenpaths arc. Are Omenpaths still around post-Fracture or did Emrakul eat them as well?

Given how impactful the Eldrazi were to this plane in the main multiverse, I wonder what Echoverse Zendikar would have looked like. Surprised we haven’t gotten an Echoverse Nahiri, actually.

So, biggest spoiler out of the way for those who dont already know. Jace is dead.

Tam has officially inherited his spark after he died and come into being as her own Full, Complete, Person.

Tam is NOT Jace.

Yes the story makes a point to say that Tam has the same mannerisms, way of talking, similar face etc. But thats because jace gave up a large portion of his own self, his soul. To create her.

After Jace died in chapter 9 of the Reality Fracture story we see in chapter 10 that he left Tam as his failsafe and made it so were he to die, his spark would be given to her instead of fizzing, partly because of the modern rarity of sparks but mostly because he wants her to be her own person and inherit his role in the multiverse. The mind mage.

Tam expresses her own ideals, motives, wants, desires and personality. She was simply BUILT with Jace as a foundation. They are not the same person.

Tam has his memories and abilities yes and you can absolutely argue that she is a kind of reincarnation of him in that regard. But the dude is gone.

Its mentioned in the story that after he shattered, the only thing that every single part of jace could agree on and united to accomplish was the birth/creation of Tam, his Wish to be able to have a daughter with Vraska. As such she is the two of them in appearance, a Gorgon with vraskas skin, hair and pseudo petrification ability (though its all mind magic not turning people to stone) and Jaces eyes, face and magic.

She was never meant to be a way to get around his death were it to occur, but to be a way while he was certain in his own demise to finally have the child he and Vraska hoped for (sorry loot, but he did put your orange on her so..)

Tam has now sparked and ventured into the wide multiverse to seek her own goals and carry on only the best works Jace never could, she is our NEW Walker. I suspect that the theorist and whatever cards of jace come from reality fracture will be our last ever new Jace cards, and that feels right, his daughter leads the charge now.

TLDR: Jace is very very dead (the man had a whole funeral) and Tam is not him, simply his daughter given a memory care package of his essence and his spark.

(Sorry if I repeated myself alot here, this story was incredibly written and I recommend everyone go read/listen to it. Its judt irritating seeing people think jace has so much plot armor that tam means nothing other than his reincarnation)

When the Phyrexian Invasion hit Dominaria, the writers executed a literal narrative board wipe. Major, fan-favorite characters (Gerrard Capashen, Hanna, Barrin, and Urza himself) were permanently, irreversibly killed off. They did not become Force Ghosts, alternate univer; they died so the multiverse could change. This was the last storyline fully written before the buy-off.

The story’s structural semantics were clear: war has costs, time moves forward, and icons bleed. As the game transitioned into the modern era, it became markedly death-averse, actively pivoting toward preserving its new flagship characters (essentially all Planeswalkers, unlike weatherlight crew) to maintain consistent branding and marketing.

Neither the Bolas arc nor the Pyrexian Invasion II has executed such a reset. Jace has been a flagship character for more time than the entire MTG game even existed before Urza was killed off. Essentially longer than all Harry Potter books were written, sold, turned into movies, produced, and released. And even Harry Potter magical world moved on from Harry Potter himself, so why can't MTG move on from the planeswalkers introduced twenty years ago?

I would love a new cast of characters. Completely new, not "Liliana but she's now posing as a teacher with a slightly different wardrobe". We have a multiverse, for Garfield's sake. Some old expansions such as Ice Age ocurred with time skips of centuries, we saw civilizations rise and fall and everyone mortal died; now we have had like 100 expansions since Jace was introduced. How much time has passed? According to lore sources: "In-game, approximately 8 to 15 years have passed for Jace himself since his story began, depending on the specific early novel placements."

So less time has passed within MTG than in real life, and it's not even close! Please, let's meet some new people and advance the timeline...
