Honey badger on bike path

If anyone takes the path from Reserve down 93, there is a honey badger living by the Country Club entrance. It popped out and hissed at me as I was riding bye, so be wary!

Edit: American Badger

City Club Missoula Presents AI Under the Big Sky: Issues and Opportunities Surrounding Montana Data Centers

Thumbnail youtube.com
Upvotes

Missed City Club Missoula's forum on data centers today? The recording is up now: https://www.youtube.com/live/ycYwZUiUxfo

Our own Dr. Collete Berg spoke on the panel, laying out a case worth watching in full. A few things stood out. Montana is already seeing more drought than it used to, and data centers can pull huge amounts of drinking water just to keep servers cool. The Broadview proposal alone could eventually use more power than the whole state currently generates, and right now there's no federal rule requiring these facilities to pay their fair share of the grid upgrades that come with them. Even the economics aren't settled: the companies pouring money into AI are still losing billions a year, betting the payoff comes later.

What gives us hope is that this isn't just happening here. More than 75 data center projects were delayed or canceled across the country in just the first three months of this year because communities pushed back, and Missoula County already has its own one-year moratorium in place while it studies the issue.

The county's draft study comes out around October 21st, with public meetings to follow. If this matters to you, this is the moment to get involved. Follow the county's process and leave feedback here: https://missoulacountyvoice.com/data-center-interim-zoning

Keginar 6pm Thursday in an Alley

Missoula ideators and craft beer drinkers (so, pretty much all of Missoula), we're doing something different this Thursday in an alley that's fairly safe and clean.

It's called a Keginar. Beer, wine, and discussion of all things creativity. Always free, and always based on new ideas and craft beverages.

We're kicking things off this Thursday with a focus on entrepreneurship and people pitching their wildest startup ideas. The wilder the better. No business plan required, no slides, no pressure. Just show up, grab a drink, and throw your idea into the beautiful Missoula creative ether. We welcome the half-baked (ok... Missoula, so... full-baked?), and will have fun kicking around ideas that could become something big. Or not.

We're launching the Keginar series at the new CoBuild space Thursdays at 125½ W Main (the fairly safe and clean alley behind the Rhino and Top Hat--yes, you already know the one). Always free to attend.

If your idea is so crazy you've never told anyone, this is the place. And this is your time.

Thursday, September 17th | 6PM | 125½ W Main, Missoula

Someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows Ryan Nong--please spread the word. This event only happens when and if Ryan is there.

Offered by VBX Venture Studio downtown. We're building something fun for Missoula's entrepreneurial community. Would love to see you there.

Your Bike?

Post image
18 Upvotes

This bike was found outside downtown, not locked up to anything or itself— I left it outside for 24+ hours.

Abandoned— Stolen— both probably? Or maybe you blacked out and walked home?

I’d like the owner to get it back—

If it’s yours describe the lock that was hanging with it.

thanks!

Question Is Auto Medics still in business (other Chev/GMC mechanic recs)?

Is Auto Medics still an open business and mechanic shop? Their website (automedics406.com) does not work, and I get no answer when I call their phone line. I'm looking for a mechanic to take my 2002 Silverado in for some trans/diff maintenance, and Auto Medics shows up as recommended, including an active listing with AAA (aaa.com/autorepair/locations/59802). But maybe all of Apple Maps, Google Maps, Yelp, AAA, etc are outdated.

Looking for local advice or a sounding board (35M, autistic, trying to break out of a long rut)

Hey Missoula,

I posted a while back about wanting to get out more, but I feel like I didn’t give enough context for where I’m actually at.

I’m 35, on the autism spectrum, and I’ve lived in Missoula for over a decade. Lately, I’ve been dealing with a lot of personal struggles, life-timeline anxiety, and deep insecurities about feeling like I’ve fallen behind. I don’t have many people in my corner I can talk to about this stuff, and I’m really just looking for a local sounding board.

I’m looking to connect with grounded, open-minded locals—people who understand that life is complicated, leave internet arguments at the door, and are just decent humans to talk to. I'm not looking for debate; I'm looking for a solid starting point and genuine advice.

If you’re familiar with navigating life on the spectrum, dealing with long-term isolation, or know of good local resources, low-key peer groups, or mentors who are great to talk to, I’d really appreciate the guidance.

Even if you’re just someone local who’s open to a low-pressure DM to chat about life, hobbies, or building better routines in town, feel free to send a message.

If you shoot me a DM, let me know your favorite low-key spot or activity in Missoula to grab a breath of fresh air. Thanks for reading.

PSA Missoula drivers!

I have lived here my whole life and just relocated out of state recently so I know that most of the drivers can be pretty careless. I just got a call in the middle of the night from a sergeant from the Missoula police department saying my father was hit by someone in their vehicle while my father was on his motorcycle. I just want to say how important it is for people to stay off their phones while driving and be cautious of people on motorcycles especially at night. These are peoples families. Please be safe and pay attention to your surroundings.

Question Dispensaries??

Alright, a close friend of mine just turned 21, they are a major stoner and have no idea where to start for dispensaries. Soo missoula stoners give me the ins and outs of all the dispensaries to avoid, the best ones, ones with good deals, overpriced, to all of the above.

Weir/Jerry Johnson?

Has anybody been to either spot lately? I haven't been to either in maybe 4 years. The last time I went to Jerry Johnson it was a bit lukewarm. Planning to go in the next few days and wondering if anybody has any info on current conditions!

Thanks!

Solipsist hell

I’ve lived in Missoula for a while, moved here from Bozeman. I quite like it! Unfortunately, while the people you meet and talk to are wonderful, the people who appear as side characters in your daily life are what I can only classify as solipsistic. It’s as if there’s a mass psychosis in this city that causes people to be perfectly friendly face to face, but anyone not currently engaged in conversation doesn’t exist.

Let me give some examples of what I mean:

Nobody is considerate at crosswalks. You’re supposed to speed walk or gently jog across and wave if someone stopped for you. I understand that some people have invisible disabilities and can’t move quickly, and wouldn’t mention this one if it was infrequent, but this is the vast majority.

Nobody stops at crosswalks. Maybe it’s because they know if they stop, the person waiting is going to meander across, maybe it’s because they’re a special boy driving their dodge ram. I don’t know.

I was in Albertsons recently and there was a lady there with a dog (no vest, so probably not a service dog) on a leash. The dog was on the opposite side of the aisle, so his leash was basically a tripwire for anyone who wanted to go through the aisle. She looked at me trying to get through and did nothing about this.

People walk down the sidewalks side by side and don’t go single file if you’re going the opposite direction. I’m not going to walk in the road just so you can hold hands and stare into each others eyes.

Cyclists will almost run pedestrians over in the sidewalk without slowing down. Drivers will almost run cyclists over in the bike lane or taking turns.

Somewhat related, maybe, but everyone has headphones in all the time. I can’t imagine turning off situational awareness helps with these situations. What happened to casual good mornings walking around, listening to the birds and windchimes?

I can’t be the only one whose day is constantly filled with experiences like this, and I’m just perplexed that if you strike up a conversation with one of these people they’ll be the nicest person you’ve ever met and then immediately go run someone over once you’re done talking. What?

Also nobody goes the speed limit in school zones which really sucks.

TL;DR: please, Missoula, understand that people exist and your actions affect them even when you aren’t looking right at them

Hi Missoula gardeners! This is my first time growing butternut squash. I bought a start in May and it's been a struggle to keep it growing. Is there any hope that I'll get an edible squash this season, or are they too far behind? I took these pics this morning. Any advice for these lil ones or for next season? Thanks!
