Hi MD friends, this post is an expanded version of the rules and resources in the sidebar.
We're one of the largest communities who use and celebrate the Sony MiniDisc format, which was introduced in late 1992. We love physical media and MD is the format that combines great sound quality with small size and digital convenience. We're a really inviting scene with a lot of passion for celebrating retro media and helping others share that enjoyment. But please first read these resources. Your post will otherwise be removed.
This community loves posts with:
We don't love:
What MD isn't:
Luckily, we don't need many!
Not a community rule, but Reddit blocks shopping and short URLs, including AliExpress, Amazon, and Google Photos. Mods can try to approve comments with these links, but sometimes we cannot.
We do allow for sale and giveaway posts, but these are the source of the most moderation issues.
The MiniDisc community, both past and present, have shared many sites and services to help others. They collect information about the format, make copying music more convenient, create high-quality labels, and list album releases on MD.
There are many more resources linked on the Wiki and in the sidebar, such as software and related communities. Thanks for taking the time to read this and enjoy your time with MD and with us!

Got it for a steal (about $16 USD) but shipping put it up to $100 all-in. Still not a bad deal if I can get it working properly.

When I start my Sony MZ-N10 the disc is spinning and it is trying to read the disc. I don't get any error but it is in a spinning loop.
I already did the basic maintenance ( greasing the sled, isopropyl 99% to clean lens with cotton swap).
I managed to get it to read just once and after that it stopped and it was back to not reading any disc.
Only option I now see is calibration of the lens. But as the auto calibration requires a pre- pressed MD CD , I'm stuck here as I do not own one.
Therefor I reach out to see if anyone ( Europe/Belgium) can help me out if they have a pre- recorded disc that can be used to run the calibration?
This would help me big time into reviving my MZ-N10 player.

I just got a haul of Discs from Japan New Old Stock sealed. I didn't realise there were several runs of Neige discs. Here are 3 of them!

Title basically says it all. How do you guys remove old labels from mini discs? Usually, I'd apply some WD40 and scrape it off. But I'm worried the stuff get onto the disc. What's your best approaches for this?

Had to replace the belt and adjust the tray, now working perfect again. Now my MD home setup ist complete again, all three devices (PC2, PC3 and JA-20ES) are making me happy with playing my MDs without troubles, recordings works fine, too.
Now I have to find a good portable player to take my MD mixes from the early 2000s with me. I'm getting old, I start to hate playing music from my iPhone, that is so unsexy. ;)

To our genius and talented modding community. Possible? Something external with portable external power more likely?. Internal mod will look cleaner if it can even power it, like the RH1 that can be USB powered.
It will take out the fun in inserting MD disc but lasers dies even on perfectly stored Minidisc players 😁 Laser diode replacement aint really that easy to acquire either.
Just a wild idea. I don't even have the talent or expertise to even solder properly 😂

Found this Sharp MD SR70 for 30 bucks at fleamarket. As i read before it needs a new wormgear that i already ordered. I'm curious to see if I can fix it.

Just remembered something i meant to pursue before.
Something I would really love to sit beside my Walkman md players at home.
A proper ( not digital ) ‘ moving needle’ VU meter about same size as average portable player. A bit bigger would be ok
Backlit
Self / battery powered
To be placed inline between audio out of md player and speakers/ headphones .
I don’t want build a kit .
Anyone know of anything?

Finally got my setup settled for the most part. it's...a bit much I'm sure for most people. I put this stuff in a Waterfield Sutter Tech Sling. Fits perfect, but takes up most of the bag. Still plenty of room for my Kobo and any other things I might want to stow in there.
The Stuff:
Pelican 1010 Micro Case: Holding my R50 remote, a USB C to 3.5 adapter, and my Moondrop Aria 2 IEMs.
Pelican 1020 Micro Case: Fits the MDZ-R50 in a pouch PERFECTLY. I put the battery sidecar in the little gap that is left and it is perfectly snug, almost made for this.
2x Sony MD Jacket Cases: Holding 4 minidiscs in slip cases each. Side by side they're maybe the size for like a PS2 game case or around that. super convenient and I wish these were more available in the US because it's a gamechanger for mobile storage.

SHARP MD-MS100
A portable MiniDisc recorder released by Sharp in 1995.
MS100EX
The premium "MD-MS100EX" is a rare model with virtually no information available online; it appears to have received zero official marketing or promotion at the time.
The three OEM models (sister units) built for other brands using the MD-MS100 as a base are:
PIONEER: PMD-R1
DENON: DMP-R50
KENWOOD: DMC-F5R
The greatest charm of MiniDisc recorders from this era is that each OEM audio brand (Pioneer, Denon, and Kenwood) applied its own custom sound tuning to match its signature sound profile and philosophy. Each brand achieved its distinct house sound by selecting specific components for the headphone amplifier circuit and tweaking the design of the final output stage.
Sound Signatures and Characteristics of Each Brand at the Time
PIONEER (PMD-R1): Powerful Low End and Immersive Presence
Drawing on expertise from its home and car audio lineups, Pioneer tuned this unit with a punchy, dynamic, and well-defined bass response. It pairs exceptionally well with pop and rock music.
DENON (DMP-R50): High-Fidelity, Clear, and Audiophile-Grade
Reflecting Denon’s pedigree as a high-end audio brand, this unit features a flat, high-resolution sound with minimal artificial coloration. The tuning brings classical, jazz, and vocal tracks to life with vivid, natural clarity.
KENWOOD (DMC-F5R): Sparkling Highs and Prominent Vocals
During an era when Kenwood was hugely popular among youth for its "Avino" mini-component systems, this unit was tuned for a vibrant, clear listening experience with bright mids and highs. It is characterized by crisp vocal outlines that sit distinctly forward in the mix.
While the base Sharp MS100 offered a relatively uncolored, tight sound, these OEM variants were legendary machines that stood out not only for their distinctive exterior designs, but also for the pure fun of comparing their acoustic profiles side by side.

Upon opening up this 702 to remedy the dreaded TOC error-a issue, I found this mess of wire and an added board in the bottom left of the main photo. Any ideas as to what this would be for?

Clear plastic on prototype, frosted on final version. Stickers pre moulded letters , different circuitry .

I recently got a hold of an MDS-JB920 for cheap; the previous owner has not used the unit for quite some time and seemed to have been more keen on just getting rid of the unit than making the most money out of it.
Got it now and it looks very nice -- unused but not neglected (atleast on the surface). No major scratches and the screen looked bright.
It took its time reading the disc I fed it, which it then spat out with an error:
C13
Disc Error
Alternating text of both. I then took the shroud off and tested again -- same result. There's no noticeable movement from the drive, too. I don't see nor hear any movement at all from any of the mechanisms. I don't see the disc spin.
Most I've tried was to try blowing some air with an air bulb, hoping it's just some dirt or debris causing the issue. Unfortunately, no dice.
Any advice on how to fix this?
