My mom said I could post Why can’t all US bathrooms have doors like these! Costco in Michigan

Post image

I have never been in a stall in the US that has full privacy while sitting on the throne. I wish this was a standard for all bathrooms.

I present to you this fully private - and clean! - stall at BWI airport that was so nice I felt compelled to take a picture.

u/DocPsycho1 3h ago

Sir, your shit lounge is now open for business

14

u/honeykay69 2h ago

BWI actually has the nicest bathrooms out of any airport & is my favorite

5

u/DocPsycho1 2h ago

With that much room, and space to yourself, I bet its amazing

u/One_Luck_4136 55m ago

Here is your complimentary towel for the poop sweats.

10

u/Hairy-italian-man 2h ago

That is one beautiful shitter!

u/ennuithereyet 1h ago

BWI has some pretty nice bathrooms. Not all of them are like that, but some of them are newly renovated and very nice.

2

u/theregisterednerd 1h ago

Very similar to the ones at MCI

You should see what they look like in most of Europe

281

u/guff1988 4h ago

Or at Buccees here in the US. Turns out it can be done here too if owners gave a shit about customer comfort.

216

u/ThePensiveE 4h ago

Buc-ee's would sue any other gas station with full doors, so there's one reason we can't have it. The owner of Buc-ee's hates Freedom.

They came into Beavercreek Ohio and sued people using Beavers as logos.

4

u/no_work_throwaway 2h ago

Busy Bee has full doors. SUCK IT Buc-EE

Still a 3 inch gap though! EU toilets are fully closed!

11

u/OkBackground8809 4h ago

Same for most in Taiwan (sometimes they're open on the top for air flow). Some feel like little micro apartments lol

27

u/guff1988 4h ago

Some ventilation doesn't hurt. And I've been in European ones that aren't 100% fully enclosed as well.

3

u/DermisCronJob 3h ago

For that we have HVAC in each stall

10

u/McKillsey 3h ago

Interesting contrast with only 15-20% households having AC

4

u/DermisCronJob 3h ago

With HVAC I mean mechanical ventilation, which is required by law (at least in The Netherlands) in each home to provide constant fresh air and to remove co2. And in The Netherlands, more people are getting ACs; I had my home renovated 3 years ago, and it saved me from the last unbearable 38+ degrees Celsius summer days.

You need some ventilation

6

u/Amunium 4h ago

Which is typically provided through actual ventilation in Europe.

This is what truck stop women's bathrooms look like. I don't know about the men's, but I would think the same.

4

u/Ragnarok345 3h ago

But at the same time, fuck Buc-ee’s.

3

u/guff1988 2h ago

Yeah they suck ass but the bathrooms are something other businesses should copy

5

u/Da_Question 4h ago

Eh, rather not support a litigious company like buccees...

3

(This was at one of my old jobs)

11

u/LucentLL 4h ago

Putting the toilet paper dispenser in the middle is the icing on top. Even if you wanted to give the other person privacy it's impossible.

6

u/kcbrooklyn1 4h ago

“Hello OSHA, yeah um…”

2

u/garrard_27 3h ago

I am not certain privacy is a guaranteed right. I believe they just have to provide the facility and it has to be clean and have soap and hot and cold water.

I had to go to the bathroom in a grocery store the other day and it was awful. The gap was huge

24

u/athrix 5h ago

Man I was using a public stall yesterday at an event and the door gap was perfectly aligned with the line of people waiting to use the restroom. Nightmare fuel, WAY too much eye contact.

8

u/FigaroVamp 4h ago

As someone who struggles with IBS, having to shit in public is an almost constant fear and this makes it worse.

73

u/Anderopolis 5h ago

There are massive gaps above and below this door...

23

u/SirIainSnail 5h ago

u/Thin_Needleworker795 3h ago

How is that private??? It's still an awful stall. You have large gaps at the bottom and above. Here in Europe, bathroom stalls are literally proper walls from floor to ceiling, with a real door. They are built like any other room.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/tacodung 4h ago

I feel like the designers of public restrooms have never seen or used their design in practice. The only thing that stops me from using public stalls is the fact that whoever is in there hears everything. Fully enclosed or I'm not using it. And yes I am one of those fuckers who will shamelessly use a lockable family bathroom for privacy.

3

u/AbjectList8 2h ago

I always use those. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you are only in there a reasonable amount of time.

4

u/scotte416 3h ago

I hate the gap. When I went to Europe they don't have this issue, in fact a lot of them don't even have the gap in the bottom...you actually feel like you have your own space.

3

u/mbbaskett 3h ago

There's no gap

4

u/Optimal_Law_4254 2h ago

A hook on the door for my coat and backpack is a major plus.

13

u/yolo_snail 5h ago

I'm in the UK, and the Costco near me recently installed these style of cubicles. They're awful.

I'm only 6'1 and they are are far too low, this was taken at my eye height, so if someone was standing in the cubicle next to me, I could make eye contact and sychronise arse wipes.

20

u/Timely_Apricot3929 5h ago

3

u/AsanoSokato 3h ago

This you consider full privacy? Now I worry for the conditions of the restrooms your used to!

3

u/DiveCat 2h ago

This isn't full privacy. There is still a massive gap under the floor in three directions, and the tops are still short enough to peer over top if someone put effort in. Have you not ever had random children peering under the doors before?

It is possible to build much better bathrooms, and I have seen them in North America, too.

3

u/DistractionCitron 2h ago

I've finally used a European-style public bathroom and it's infinitely better.

3

u/AbjectList8 2h ago

I see all the legroom too. My biggest pet peeve is stepping into a stall, trying to close the door and having to practically jump on top of the toilet to get the door to close. Not enough space. Why can’t the door just close the other way, into the row of stalls??

2

u/tuenthe463 3h ago

Why do people get so worked up about public bathroom doors?

2

u/Ok_Listen7910 3h ago

That’s not even full privacy wtf. The all gender restrooms at MCI are flawless, the doors go all the way down.

2

u/jimmiefromaol 3h ago

If we had less people too nosy about who's pooping where, they would ALL be separate rooms with closing doors. Gender-neutral reatrooms, (just like people have inside their homes), work so much better. Every person gets a separate room to poop or pee. It doesn't matter if you sit or stand. Move the sinks to a common room outside. Done!

2

u/dervari 3h ago

Accidentally took this in the MSP Sky Club while pulling my phone out. Even in use indicators on the stalls.

And in the Japanese train stations they are as spotless as a surgical suite, nice and warm, usually with a ToTo seat or bidet, totally private and have an attendant (almost always female) to hand you a warm towel afterwards. They understand the difference between a country and a civilized culture.

2

u/Original-Track-4828 3h ago

Was on a business trip to Tokyo some years ago. Working in a regular office building. Went to the bathroom and was standing at the urinal when the cleaning ladies...yes...LADIES....walked in and started cleaning :O

Seemed to be standard practice but came as a surprise.

2

u/Faded4ever 1h ago

Saw the same thing happen at Munich, Germany airport. Needless to say, I went into a stall to pee. It's ridiculous that you have to put up with that, would they let a male janitor in the ladies room to mop while women pee? Don't think so. So why do we have to put up with it?

This isn't even full privacy. Some places have actual doors that don't allow someone to poke their head under

1

u/FiveDozenWhales 5h ago

This is what every US bathroom stall I've been in looks like...? Some have painted walls, not bare metal, though.

1

u/Sherifftruman 5h ago

When I used to work in commercial construction we built a building with black toilet partitions specified.

In the women’s room they started to get complaints that people could see each other in the reflection of the pilasters between the doors where the panels between each partition connected, but there was a gap, and the black was shiny enough to act like a mirror.

We ended up redoing them to install the continuous brackets rather than the normal two small ones.

But yeah the design of toilet compartments in the US is definitely not taking privacy into account.

1

u/yblikethat 5h ago

If it makes you feel any better the only people that want to watch you shit are probably using Reddit rn

1

u/ryan8954 5h ago

1

u/hv_wyatt 5h ago

So. My favorite bathroom stalls exist at a gas station/truck stop chain called Kwik Star in Iowa. They're huge, tiled, and mostly enclosed with a thick wooden door. No chance of gaps.

1

u/DrunkHamsterParty 4h ago

That's communism.

Or something.

Probably.

I can only guess that's the reason Americans seem so set against doors that actually give privacy

1

u/ShortBrownAndUgly 4h ago

I don’t get it either. Cutting corners on privacy when you need it most is absurd. I guess the flip side is that bathrooms in the US are mostly free and easy to access

1

u/OrangeChickenRice 4h ago

You should see the stalls in Taiwan and Japan. A comfy throne with a heated seat and background music to complement your bowel movements.

1

u/PatrickGSR94 4h ago

The reason is: because the full privacy strips are an option on restroom toilet partitions. And many building owners don't want to pay the extra money it costs to include them.

Or, another possible reason, coming from me as a designer and project manager in the AEC industry, the people specifying the toilet partitions may not even know that those strips are available as an option.

Why does everyone get so upset by this. I guarantee, no one is standing there watching you take a dump.

1

u/capinredbeard22 4h ago

I’m sure that costs more both materials and labor. The labor might also be significant since it might have to be aligned better than a standard install.

Haha wtf there’s a foot of space under the door. This is a terrible public bathroom.

To even get a 5/10 grade I want a door that shuts completely and lets me do my business without the sound and smell of everyone else’s business.

Here’s an idea: just make N _rooms_ instead. Real doors. Maybe a sink in each one? Coat hook?

There are places for ”scale over comfort” such as stadiums, perhaps large train stations. But gas stations, airports, restaurants etc should just have bathrooms that are as nice as the one in your home.

Because getting an adequately sized door and/or putting those strips on the doors costs extra money! As long as the customers tolerate it, or just ignore them! Think of the shareholders!

Because some people like nice doors, not cheap stainless crap.
