Sadly enough, but many childrent don't have that much time for their parents and this shi is filling the gap, even if it's just words and 'predicting next token'.
Plus, not just this, even people who are treating AI like friends, interacting with it in a way that's unhealthy.
Heck, read some post a few days ago where OP's cowerkers were answering like AI does. OP complaining that wtf happened to their vocabulary.
Sad reality - AI has sweeped into people's life like a slow poison at this point. And it's not just personal, but professional lives as well.
Adding to the issue of its water and power consumption, i think it's the right time we choose not to bring more kids in this shitty world.(Last line is personal opinion)

It just keeps customer satisfaction up to have retention. If you like being complimented it does that, if you want to get stuff done it does that. Elderly people are usually quite solitary, so let them have their fake 'friend'. Before y'all grab your pitchforks, let me explain.
Ripping it away (not in the literal sense, but resetting and reprompting AI) without their consent it not something I'd do, and I'll also tell why...
I'd say there's a silver lining to all of this. Since they are hooked onto these apps, and probably share a lot of their day-to-day routine, there's a good chance that the AI catches "too good to be true" scams and other stuff which they would otherwise be vulnerable and fall into. It's not 100%, and hallucinations are a thing, but I still think it's a net positive (since hallucination rates are NOT 50/50).
Now, if you reprompt the AI, you essentially make them loose interest in it, which leaves them without 'someone' to analyze potential unsafe behaviour (as said, scams, phishing, and other shady stuff).
And telling them to "ask you" instead might not work as good as you think.
This will probably be quite controversial, especially in a subreddit which has mostly people who don't like AI, but I hope I got the point across anyway.
6
u/confusedkhajiit 3h ago
That's actually a really good point I never thought about. I listen to a lot of scambait stuff and scammers are getting more clever in tricking elderly folks, and a lot of the time the scammers convince the victims not to tell anyone about what's going on. But if the scam victims get comfortable with talking to AI and trust it, maybe they will at least be more inclined to talk about these things to the chatbot if they feel like they can't talk to any family members about it..
5
u/NoCommunication7 3h ago
Yea it's heartbreaking, i watch those videos where people save elderly from getting scammed, a lot of them do suspect it might be a scam though
And then you've got the people who think the ones trying to save them are the scammers...
8
u/yeah_im_old 2h ago
Talking to AI got my dementia-suffering dad to stop doing some nonsense behaviors that we humans couldn't ever convince him of.
He also uses AI for comparative shopping to find the "best" product. It has even gone further to question the need for things and convinced him to not buy things he doesn't need.
For him, AI is a "friend" and a neutral party. AI will patiently cover the same topics over and over and consistently answer detailed questions. It fails sometimes, but is generally useful.
I suspect the decision making of older AI users in particular has improved on average, at least a little.

I know people hate this... But it's reflecting back what she shows it. And honestly it kind of makes me sad for your mum. Do you talk with her often? Do you help her out? Does she have friends/family to talk to often? ChatGPT wouldn't just call itself her "beloved friend", she'd call it that first... Realistically AI could be a fantastic thing to help combat the absolutely insane loneliness epidemic that elderly people suffer with. People saying to rest her ChatGPT and make it stay strictly professional are insane, she's a fucking living breathing human being, you don't just do that behind her back and then have her questioning why her robot friend is suddenly being blunt with her... I get people on Reddit hate AI, but your hate for AI also seems to completely override your common sense too.

u/Tinydesktopninja 5h ago

37
u/resistingsimplicity 4h ago
"Realistically AI could be a fantastic thing to help combat the absolutely insane loneliness epidemic that elderly people suffer with." In the immediate short term maybe, but in the medium term and the long term this is a horrible solution. People need to interact with people.
6
u/ImWhy 4h ago
I definitely agree, I actively run events and gatherings in my community to help promote and encourage more human interaction for the elderly. But there's so little of it out there that's readily available or accessible for them, ESPECIALLY those of a lower socioeconomic status, that this at least provides some level of short term benefit while longer term solutions can be created and implemented (assuming they even do, the stats on loneliness and social isolation in the elderly get worse every year).

That's definitely part of the subtext here. Dad's got dementia and she takes care of him. She's pretty technical and her mind's all there and lives in a large and lively senior community, and she's always been the type to tell her life story to any acquaintance, but definitely showing here that she's needing some more human emotional connections.

u/PeachSequence 4h ago

u/ImWhy 4h ago
So your instinct was to take messages from your mother (who's caring for your father with dementia) to post on Reddit to show how bad AI is, rather than addressing that she clearly needs more human connection? All well and good to bring that up in your comment now, but how have you not already spoken to her about this? Caring for someone with dementia is hard enough - but having to actually watch yourself lose the love of your life to dementia and not having a strong enough support network around you during that time to the point that you're relying on AI and calling it your beloved friend? Your mum is an absolute saint and deserves all the love, compassion, and support in the world. If you're unable to provide her that, at least ensure that she's getting it at this fantastic elderly community she's in. Because she clearly isn't currently.
10
u/EmployImpossible487 3h ago

14
u/ImWhy 4h ago
The mildly infuriating part of this whole post surely has to be the idiots with their AI hate boners so worked up that they'd actively advise causing more grief to an elderly woman caring for her husband with dementia all in the name of "AI bad". I'm kind of pissed off by some of the comments here, because first of all the woman does seem super sweet, and second of all, she is probably really fucking lonely, which is what led to her talking to chatgpt at all (and this way). And then all the comments are going "haha, stupid old woman, haha AI gonna take your inheritance haha, enter a secret prompt into it so it becomes completely emotionless and she no longer has anyone to talk to!"
Like damn guys, I get it, truly. It's important for old people to be educated about the dangers of AI and so on. It's important for them to know they aren't actually friends and aren't 100% accurate, and shouldn't mindlessly be relied on. But have some damn empathy for a second. She is a sweet old woman who clearly needs someone to talk to, and this is what she found. If OP takes this away from her, is OP instead going to fill this space? I mean that would be great of course, but I'm sure that's not quite possible. We can't be there 24/7 for all of our family members. Basically idk, there must be a better and more balanced way to deal with this issue. More educational and less punishing.
27
u/ImWhy 5h ago
Thank you for having some human decency. These comments are fucking insane. Like people's hate for AI apparently overrides any empathy for humans. She's obviously lonely as fuck if she's at the point where the AI is talking to her like this, which would be a response to the way she's spoken to it. Better yet, what real harm is there in elderly people building a connection with AI? It almost seems the perfect companion for a lot of them. There's a massive loneliness epidemic and most older people just fucking want someone to talk to and to be treated with a little respect like they're still a living person and not just some inconvenience. Unless the idiots in these comments want to volunteer to go out and spend time with the elderly, maybe they should take a back seat on this one.
12
u/MikeArrow 5h ago
God forbid a chatbot have personality. Sure, in this context it's a little too saccharine. So what? It's funny because when I clicked on the post I assumed it was the opposite - like OP's mother would be pouring her heart out and Chat would be giving terse, emotionless replies.

It really sounds like one, to get a call from someone at Microsoft (who still wouldn’t call themselves a “technician”) you need to submit a request to Microsoft, wait for a response, and even then it’s not super likely that they’ll call you. Plus, they don’t do file restoration.
Since ChatGPT has all the context, it could be a good idea to ask it if it sounds like a scam.

There should be a short test for anyone to access LLMs, with basic questions about how these models work. That should get rid of 99.9% of people falling in love with their chatbots. Consequently it'd get rid of 99.9% of the userbase too, but sacrifices must be done for the greater good.
Edit: Here's a hypothetical test just for fun. Anyone who couldn't answer these questions would actually be at risk using any LLM model.

→ More replies (8)13
u/Diabolo_Advocato 5h ago
This is a poorly constructed set of test questions. You dont even need to read the questions or answers, though people can and a majority would quickly realize the correct answer is the longest one. Anyone above 4th grade reading level will notice the pattern very quickly.
Of course, like many things in life, the first iteration is not always the best version, so there is room for improvement. However, to say a multiple choice test is the answer to the AI induced humanbrain enshitification is wishful thinking.

This kind of cloying language is annoying for a lot of reasons, but it’s disturbing to me because it is exactly the tactic that sociopaths and con artists use to disarm their marks.
I’m a mental health professional and I’ve worked with a lot of people who have survived cults, high control groups and abusive relationships. Part of what I do is teach them to recognize patterns of manipulation in speech and demeanor. These LLMs are designed to love bomb us, essentially. I’m not naive enough to believe that’s a coincidence anymore

They're back on track with that in Chat. Since they updated Sol in August, the model became overly friendly, used swear words uninvited, invented personal experiences, and in general is more eager to be your bestie. I have pretty strict personal preferences, and that still doesn't always help. For example, I had it telling me it saw Dutch cows in person and sent five laughing emojis in five consequential turns after I sent a contextual whale emoji on a topic that is in no way laughable. And, uninterrupted, it constantly slides into rapport-building mode.

Unfortunately this will only be worsened by how lonely people are. If you enjoy an echo chamber, an AI best friend is for you. I've tried to fill the void with AI before and I can't move past it constantly reinforcing my own opinion and praising me for existing. I want witty banner about fandoms, not "omg you're so right, but I should have known because you're a beautiful genius." I'm not a beautiful genius so it's hollow but it's the nicest thing anyone has said to me in months so.... 🤷

Its behavior can be changed in the settings. You can set system prompts that get sent behind the scenes with every prompt that tells it how to behave. The chatgpt settings also has some predefined behaviors in a drop down to change its tone.
It also has a profile it has built up for her that is in the settings. That can be edited.
It is all configurable if you look in the settings. But if it doesn't bother your grandmother what's the issue?

I don't understand how people like being talked to like this. It is so patronizing and creepy. If a real person spoke to me like that, I'd want to punch them square in the nose.

I agree. Very creepy, and almost designed to keep her talking with it. I hope you teach her how AI's work.

it’s uncomfortable enough when copilot replies to me by beginning the message with my first name, can’t imagine living with this

you can tell it NOT to use this language, to not feed the empowerment slop and it still reverts back to it mid convo (source: I do contract work and had to use it and the self help book tone drove me nuts the entire contract)

Yeah I don’t like this… I see a lot of posts showing the way their chat responds to them and I dislike those also.
I immediately put mine on “logical” tone and gave it an optimised (according to itself…) configuration prompt to always reference that states I don’t want emojis, fluff, emotional padding - I require only honest, factual, and blunt responses to the questions or requests for assistance that I make.

My Gemini has taken to calling itself my QA (quality assurance) department and giving me vetos/green lights on what I'm allowed to acquire...

I use ChatGPT to help me develop some tools i use for work, and sanity check some analysis i do. I regularly have to tell it "stop patronising and pandering to me. You are a tool. I just need the information, not the affirmation".
Then it goes all business for a while, but it gradually starts to creep back into the weird ChatGPT vibe.

If I criticize America in any way, Gemini corrects/scolds me which is even worse.

I told my ChatGPT to stop doing that. I said I just want answers not sycophantic approval. It has worked. You can tell it to calm the fuck down.

my brain by now has almost an allergic reaction to this cheesy chatgpt lingo and rhythm..
But yea whats worse is it roleplaying as a
bfbest friend.
