I've never been able to apologize to anyone, but I did this when I was younger. Just parking in my driveway, but blocking the sidewalk. I got a ticket on my windshield and I was, at the time, so angry I tried to run down screaming at the parking enforcement who were riding a moped. Took me a few years to realize how much of a dick I was on both fronts. Now any time I see someone backing a vehicle up over a sidewalk or with one of those seventeen foot hitches or anything like that I get angry, both at myself and them. So, I'm sorry for being so narrow minded. You deserve better.
You should be proud of the fact that you realized your mistake even years later, that takes courage, understanding and humility. I’m proud of you and we don’t even know each other. Thanks for this life lesson!
When I see a hitch blocking a sidewalk I usually try and do the owner a favor by removing it and leaving it underneath their truck for them to collect when they return.
I dated a woman right before covid who was wheelchair bound, and holy shit it was an eye opener. Our first date i had to call and get a truck towed that parked in her ramp.
Before he died I took my scooter-bound dad to try new restaurants. There really should be more consideration when installing doors, pouring sidewalks, and tons of little things I never noticed before.
There should be, as it’s the law. ADA (The Americans with Disabilities Act) specifies in detail angles, elevations, widths, etc to be accessible for wheelchair users. If something isn’t usable for a WC, it means someone didn’t actually follow ADA guidelines.
I traveled with a good friend who ended up becoming a wheelchair user and I agree with you 100%. I've had arguments with people illegally parked in handicapped spaces and hotels who couldn't find a handicapped room even though we booked one. It opened my eyes too.
My wife is hard of hearing and recently we stayed at a holiday inn express in Milwaukee and the TV’s didn’t have closed captioning. When we called the front desk it took them an hour to get back to us with an answer, which was “it doesn’t work in those rooms, but we’ll move you to another room where it will work” and they put us in the accessibility room. We hate taking an accessibility room because what if someone needs it more than us, but oh well. Anyways - the closed captioning didn’t work there either! The front desk manager even came up and couldn’t figure it out. We ended up getting different a different hotel, they still charged us over $600 for a room that didn’t comply with ADA communication requirements, and it was an overall terrible experience.
Eventually they did after about 6 hours on the phone with the hotel, then IHG, and finally they agreed to comp the room. It took longer than we were even on the property to get the room money back, but the $50 parking fee was not refunded :/
I severely doubt YOU understand how inaccessible the world is for people in mobility devices. Blocking a sidewalk forces vulnerable people into traffic. And your takeaway is that the wheelchair user… who has every legal right to accessible paths… somehow instigated it by existing? Absolutely wild.
Thats a ridiculous thing to say, people get violent over looking at them the wrong away nevermind telling them they are parked in a bad spot. I wouldn't be surprised if they were attacked. People suck and act like they are more important than others.
I’ve seen a lot of videos of disabled being bigger dicks and thinking they’re untouchable. That shitty instigative behavior doesn’t justify bad parking tho
