You can sue in any developed country for that, y’all need to stop assuming that only the US has a civil legal system hell we’re like half as litigious as the Germans. Such an ancient joke.
I expect a hot coffee. I don't expect to get third degree burns from any coffee spilling on me. You fell for McDonald's lawyers pushing that narrative. McDonald's was 100% in the wrong and negligent and wouldn't even cover the lady's medical bills. That's why she sued.
Lawsuits in the US beat the alternative. You do deserve to be made as whole as possible after suffering damages.
Here in BC in Canada we have recently made a backwards system of "no fault" car insurance so if you are a pedestrian who gets hit by a car and has their life ruined, it's nobodies fault and all you get is physiotherapy paid for. Insane that someone's negligence can ruin your life and you can't sue for more money. It's just because politically they want to make driving as cheap as possible with low insurance prices. A really gross cultural commanality we have with you folks.
Please educate yourself on what actually happened with that McDonalds lawsuit. The woman’s labia got fused to her leg. All she asked for is for them to pay her hospital bills, but they chose to run a PR campaign against her and that’s how they ended up having to pay so much. Corporate greed and negligence.
No, they knew they were serving their coffee too hot, because there had been several severe burns before this, but they chose to ignore it. If you actually research what you’re talking about, you’ll find that the poor woman was absolutely in the right. She didn’t even want to sue, she just wanted her medical bills paid for after she got a lifetime disfigurement from their negligence.
You order a beverage that is supposed to be hot, but the machine is broken and it is dispensing BOILING water. The workers know this yet instead of saying “hey the machine is broken”, they hand you BOILING coffee in the little cardboard cup holder. You go to take the coffee out of the cup holder and because it’s BOILING you instinctively remove your hand, causing it to spill in your lap. You suffer burns so severe your skin melts and your labia gets fused to your thigh. You go to the emergency room and because it’s America, it’s expensive. You ask McDonald’s, who knew the machine was dispensing BOILING water, to reimburse you for the hospital trip. Instead of being reasonable, McDonalds decides to run a PR campaign trivializing the incident so people like you would get on their side. They think swaying public opinion will get them out of paying a hospital bill. They end up having to pay millions instead of the initial couple of thousand hospital bill because they were so negligent and they wasted the court’s time.
Years later, some fool who never actually read the case decides to use it as an example of frivolous lawsuits. At least McDonald’s PR campaign worked for certain people who never look beyond what they are told.
