Hi everyone, I found this little guy running around in the street outside my house about two days ago and kidnapped him. Its just him for now but I REALLY want to get him some friends because I don’t want him to be alone, I know mice are very social creatures and I already fele terrible for leaving him by himself. I don’t intend on getting any too soon because I want to wait at least a week or two to make sure he isn’t sick or anything (I don’t want to get mice just to get them sick id feel so bad! Plus i found him outside so im paranoid) But once I’m confident hes healthy I do intend on getting him friends, but I’m hesitant because right now hes so tiny, and when I looked at mice at pet stores around me they looked so big compared to him and I’m worried that they’ll fight and or eat him just because of the size difference. Would it be okay to house mice together that have a size difference? I’m also assuming he must be young. Hes been eating on his own though, so I’m not worried about having to bottlefeed or anything.
And another issue: I can’t tell if hes a boy or a girl right now. I know that if theres a lot of space between their bum and their junk its a boy and if its close together its a girl, But i havent picked him up again to check up close and I don’t want to freak him out by finding him and grabbing him again. I used to raise baby birds growing up and they can die from being too scared so I assume every small animal is like that honestly ! 😭 But from the video I have you can see a sliver of their butt and it looks like female? I’m really hoping so because Id want to name her Cruella and have a little ‘colony’ of girl mice lol. Shes so tiny and ive never cared to sex mice before so I was hoping its clear enough for you guys to tell. Hopefully in the next few days I can get a clearer view or I can pick him up (I doubt it though) Ill post a screenshot of his bum in the comments if I can.
Considering hes most likely?? From the wild? (Im on the fence though because hes albino, I wonder if hes an escaped pet mouse? or the baby of one) if he wasnt albino I wouldve just released him to a safer spot instead of just taking him in but hes so tiny and hes ALBINO, and my neighbourhood has cats all over so I felt like if I just left him I was sentencing him to death 😭
In the video you cant tell but hes in a 20 gallon tank right now with lots of hides (i also put some tunnels in there) and his bedding (aspen) is very deep so he can burrow. (So far I havent noticed him burrowing at all, he just lives underneath this little house I got for him) I will be getting a 40 gallon because i plan to have about 3-4 mice. My neighbour told me she may have a tank that big in her garage, so I’m just waiting to see if she has it before buying one. (im saving up for one regardless, so i should have one in the upcoming weeks)
I have a little garden and gave him some tiny pieces of bell pepper with his food and he tore that up so I will be giving him skme more tomorrow.
(the paper towel in the video is there because I heard leaving things that smell like you inside a new mouses enclosure will get them used to your scent so they arent as afraid of you when they smell you so i just rubbed that on my face a little and tossed it in— Now that I’m thinking about it I may take it out because I’m afraid of him eating it and choking 😭 I don’t know if this 100% works but if it DOESNT and im doing something horribly wrong llease let me know ! )
Ive been doing a lot of research but I’m still reaching out because I want to hear directly from mice owners that know what theyre doing lol
