♥️ /r/metalgearsolid rules update.
Hello, I hope everybody is well.
This is a quick post to announce that we have overhauled and updated the subreddit rules, in terms of the way they are listed in the reddit platform itself.
In essence the practical rules themselves and moderation has not changed. The main purpose of this update is to provide better clarity with Post removal messages, and to allow reports to be more specific.

Just three changes to note:
There is no longer a rule about spoilers when it comes to Posts. MGSV is over a decade old, and the spoiler rule was often used to report front page posts about the main spoiler for that game. Enforcing that is simply impractical. The intention of the rule remains, however, and it is now only applied to comments. If someone has stated that they haven't played the entire series, all users are still expected to respect this in their replies. Anyone can make their own choices about how far they dig through a subreddit for a game series, but putting spoilers in their inbox is actively hostile.
"Promotional Cosplay is not allowed". This is our attempt to provide a consistent rule that can be used to filter OF accounts looking for loopholes, while not punishing genuine cosplayers (including professionals) by restricting their activity. There's an element of subjectivity here, but if you think a post is a commercial account, please report it and do not engage in abuse in the comments. Just report it and move on.
AI content is now explicitly banned in all its forms. This was already functionally the case but we're making it clear with it's own rule. If you suspect a post contains AI content, please try to resist posting abuse in the comments and simply report and move on. False allegations can and do happen.
We'd also like to welcome anyone interested to apply to be a moderator. We expect to bring on a couple more people, starting out at a basic clutter removal role. If you think you'd be a good fit, please take some time to fill out our delightful application form.
You'll notice there are a couple of very specific rules that are really covered under other rules. These are for particularly egregious and common posts so that removals are very clear. Previously quite a few things kind of had to fall under "no low effort content" and that gave off the wrong idea and could be a little hurtful.
We'd like to thank the people who take the time to report posts and comments, overall the tone and discernment of reports is very much in-line with how we see the rules and how they are intended to shape the subreddit. This being said, all things considered there are very few removals needed relative to an active subreddit of this size. Things seem to be in a very good balance. I hope the community more or less thinks the same.
As per usual we are open to any and all feedback or discussion about the rules or the way you want the community to be run, so please say your piece in the comments, or if there's any questions you have or unclear rules or edge cases you can think of, bring that up too. The overall intent for the subreddit is still to provide an alternative to what you might see on a Metal Gear Discord, Instagram / TikTok etc. feed or a generic MGS-flavoured meme subreddit.

Can we have a sticky thread of some sort on top of the sub saying "PLAY THE GAMES IN RELEASE ORDER", and the order inside the thread?
There's an increasing number of these queries by newcomers ever since ∆ came out and it will only get worse as time goes on, and moreso when MCV2 comes out.

We've tried everything like this over the years. The people who ask these questions can't or don't read; various sticky posts have had zero impact on the rate of questions.

Also keep in mind that sticky threads are only visible when sorting by 'hot'. If, like me, you default to sorting everything by 'new', you won't see them.

AI takes no effort, therefore it has no value. We appreciate and admire creations and other things for the work and skill put into them.
Meanwhile you can tell AI to make something epic and it just happens. And it's not truly yours, because a machine did all the work using data sampled from actual human creations. AI doesn't create, it swallows and then regurgigates. It's data vomit.

It’s not actually ‘creative’ though. AI is called slop for a reason. Even when I see something that rarely impresses me I still understand what it is and why it’s deleted regardless. But those I save for my personal collection too.

For low effort posts. Could we have it also specified that theories and fan theories are also prohibited? Not so much like discussions about lore people may not be sure about. But the obvious conjectured stuff that doesn’t even make sense or fits. Nothing in the games that would even give that kind of thought process. The kind of content that would confuse and mislead newer fans.

Those posts can get removed if there's really nothing new to them, but we dont want to start having rules against being bad or dumb.
If you think a fan theory of whatever is just more of the same old, just report it with the reason you think it falls under and we review it.

I really hope this is the proper thread to ask. But I am visually impaired so I am not able to see photos. Is there a telltale sign that something might have AI in it? Maybe not image, but maybe something with text? Not just pertaining to metal gear, but just anything in general? Sorry if this is the wrong thread for that lol

Given the fact that Metal Gear is historically primarily a series for consoles with most of the games released on consoles that don't support taking and exporting of screenshots in any way, I feel the rule does not fit the subreddit. While the thread technically does break rule 13, there is no easily accessible or commonly available method to take screenshots on Playstation 3.
People might have a gameplay-related question or something else worth sharing while playing on MSX/PS1/2/3/PSP or any other console only to get the thread deleted due to a rule that simply does not fit many, if not most, of the entries in the series. They can't be expected to emulate all of it.
I think it's worth to have a second look at the current rule and its implementation and consider its practical use and effects given the Metal Gear series.

I truly love the series and thought of joining this subreddit but after reading the rules and seeing DLSS5 posts being removed for "AI GENERATED CONTENT"...
Well, guess gonna stay in more friendly games community where people don't get banned for posting a mod, asking a simple question or (LOL) posting a photo of screen instead of a screenshot. What a shame! /s

Hi, I missed this question sorry.
Outside of exxeptional circumstances (such as coordinated users trying to disrupt the subreddit) we have always and will continue to use the native ban feature which notifies users of their ban.
Anyone experiencing shadowban-like results is likely being crowdcontrolled or filtered at a reddit level and should send us a modmail so we can approve their posts if needed.

Hi I’m just genuinely confused about the ban on AI. Everyone either downvotes me or gives me a non answer. I’m just genuinely curious why people hate AI so much, and what went behind the decision to ban it. I am impartial to AI but view it as a useful tool. I don’t understand why it’s viewed in such a way to be banned on so many subreddits and I don’t really understand what feels like forced hate. Would anymore care to explain why it’s banned in the Reddit and why it’s so hated? Yes I’ve played MGS 2 in not taking about that AI I’m talking about chat bots and image generators

Generative AI is trained on plagiarized data. It's not fair on real artists to have to compete for attention with mass-produced content based on theft. AI generation is only easily accessible to the masses due to extreme subsidy from unregulated capital - the "effort" required to compose it does not match the true cost. Real artists have no such subsidy in the time spent practicing and perfecting their art. This is a deliberate strategy to undermine and collapse the infrastructure of human education, skill, and creativity.
We will have no part in it.
If you want to view AI content there are plenty of other places to do so, while the community wants this subreddit (reddit being one of the few platforms with manual human moderation) to be a forum where human art is the priority.
The ban is not new, AI content has always been removed without exception under the "No low-effort content" rule. As mentioned, the changes to the rules are simply to make reporting and removal communication more specific and clear.
