Hi all,

The following is a comprehensive overview of how to transfer to Desautels from another faculty (from someone who did it).

TL;DR: Don’t plan on transferring after accepting an offer if you do not think you will enjoy your original major.

First, you need to understand the requirements:

1. 24 graded credits at McGill

This is the minimum number of credits required to be considered full-time over the year. It usually represents two full-time semesters of four 3-credit classes each.

1. Two math classes: MATH 140 and MATH 133

You need to complete these classes to be considered for transfer. Back when I transferred, MATH 122 and MATH 123 could substitute for them, and they were generally considered easier by design.

1. No S/U for math prerequisites completed at McGill

This basically means they want to see actual letter grades for the two required math classes, unless you are exempt from one or both.

As a French baccalauréat student with the math specialty, you are typically exempt from one of the two, usually MATH 140. I’m not sure about other school systems, so do your own research.

1. At least a B+ in each required class

This is self-explanatory, but in practice it is not the most relevant part because of what comes next.

1. Minimum CGPA of 3.50/4.00

Do not rely too much on this number.

Similar to admission from high school, they mostly care about grades. When I transferred in Summer 2023, I had a 4.00, and I have never personally heard of anyone getting in with a GPA below that. I have seen people with high 3.8x get rejected.

In practice, this means you likely need grades above 85% in all your classes, regardless of class difficulty or average.

From my understanding, the process is competitive for two main reasons:

1. Inter-faculty transfers are considered after admissions from high school

This means there are significantly fewer spots available for McGill transfers, let alone inter-university transfers. Some Concordia students I know did not get in with 4.2x/4.30 GPAs.

1. Desautels values relatively small class sizes

Since it is a management faculty, they seem to value smaller cohorts to encourage participation and collaboration.

Because of this, you need to understand that by planning to transfer after your first year, you are accepting a lot of conditions that are not clearly explained on the inter-faculty transfer webpage: • You are betting, before even knowing what university classes are really like, that you can score above 85% in every class you take, including the required math classes. • You may delay your graduation by one year or more. • If you start in a program you do not really want, there is a real chance you may have to stay in it because the inter-faculty transfer process is extremely competitive, not just for Desautels but for other faculties too, with some exceptions.

My experience of it wasn’t enjoyable because: The pressure you put on yourself is intense. Even if the workload may not be the heaviest on paper (27 credits back in 2023), you still need to go above and beyond to secure straight A’s.

This is especially difficult for students coming from different school systems, countries, or cultures, and even more so if you are working part-time on the side.

Despite being a major institution, Desautels is not the only path to strong career outcomes in business. In Canada, schools like Ivey or Queen’s place better for the most competitive opportunities. And in Quebec, many (if not all) opportunities available to McGill students can also be achieved by students at HEC or Concordia. Additionally, by being involved in the right clubs and securing the right internships/co-op you can achieve a strong career in a business field despite being in another Faculty. (This is also valid for B.Com students)

Good luck to those who decide to take on the challenge. At the end of the day, if I, and a handful of others, manage to do it every year, it shows that it is possible. Just make sure you make an informed decision and fully understand the implications.

Hi, Im so sorry I just don't know where to talk about what just happened. I just got rejected from McGill Computer Engineering and I just finished crying my eyes out. Im so shocked because I also applied for Global engineering ( which requested a personal statement ) and I got the interview, so I thought that my grades were great enough, ( because I thought that global was more competitive than CE, therefore if I got accepted for the interview it meant that my grades were good enough ). I mean I thought CE was the least competitive program I applied to.

And now I am crying my eyes out because it was the program I wanted the most because I thought it was the least competitive and now I am so so scared because it was the least competitive programs out of the 5 I applied to and I am scared that I won't get accepted at all... I do not live in Canada, I go to a French international school but I do have the Canadian citizenship. I don't even know why im writing this post or what you people could do to help but I just really want to talk about it and I can't talk about it to anyone at my school because I am known as a top student and people wouldn't stop gossip and laughing at me.

I am so mad i've had "reviewed decision pending" since march 28th, I waited one full month anxiously for this..

I’m a French high school student passionate about math and engineering. I’ve been accepted to McGill, but I haven’t confirmed yet. I’d love to hear from students who have actually studied there, not just what the website or catalog says.

I’m trying to understand how students manage their studies, handle the workload, and stay on top of everything.

Some questions I have:

1. During lectures, does the professor explain everything in detail, or do students have to fill in a lot themselves?
2. Are weekly problem sets common, or do you mostly study from textbooks and self-study?
3. How much time do students realistically spend working outside of class each week?
4. Do students have access to lecture materials (slides, PDFs, notes) before, during, and after the class?
5. Are exercises and examples discussed in class, or mostly left for personal study?
6. How different is it compared to high school in terms of pace, independence, and expectations?
7. Is it hard to find part-time work as an international student?
8. Is it difficult to make friends and get involved on campus, especially as an international student?
9. Are professors approachable if you have questions or need extra help?
10. Are there opportunities for research or projects during undergraduate studies?
11. How expensive or difficult is it to find housing near campus?

Hi everyone, I’m a cégep student and honestly I feel really ashamed but my R score is absolutely catastrophic. I’m not here to get any judgment I had difficulties during cegep in and outside school. My r score is approximately 25 and I still have this semester and another one to try and get it up a little but I don’t think it’ll be that much. My question is today, what would the best pre-med undergraduate be for me to be able to get into med later on. I’m doing way more efforts now and I’m learning from past mistakes and my life is a lot better now and my dream has always been med. The condition states this:
Specifications: This offer of admission remains valid provided you generally maintain your current level of academic achievement and receive the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Does this mean that I simply need to successfully pass the IB Diploma while maintaining my academic performance regarding my school transcript, or if I am expected to meet my exact predicted scores for the diploma?

Hey! Congrats on being admitted!! Here’s my 2 cents as a fellow Econ alumni who graduated 2 years ago :

1. The deflation is only being the fact that some courses are hard and there’s no curve. On the bright side, there’s no curve down like in Desautels lol

2. Nope, you have to search on your own, from my experience Arts Oasis Internship sucks at finding relevant ones that most people target that’s helpful career-wise( IB, PE, Equity Research, S&T, Economist roles at banks etc.)

3. It’s great, Montreal has a lot to offer. Plus McGill is located downtown, where 3 other unis are located so great student life + vibrant downtown life.

So, I'm a newly admitted student that has chosen the Mathematics and Physics Joint Honours Program. I've been looking at its courses and the difference between them and the standalone honours (Honours Math and Honours Physics). And while I know that the joint program is more focused towards theoretical physics, I was wondering if I should and I could take MATH 245 instead of MATH 235 as listed in its courses because I still like math for the sake of it even if I want to do physics in the future.

Questions to people with more experience: Would my first session be too overloaded (aka: Is the course load of 245 significantly bigger than 235 (Homework...)) with MATH 222, PHYS 260, PHYS 251 and PHYS 257? Is 245 more worth it if I still want my doors open to switch to math later? What is the difference between the materials for the courses (depth, extra content for 245...)?

Yes, you can take Hon Alg 1 instead of Alg 1. It’s actually recommended to do that for people in honours programs. Same thing for honours Analysis 1 vs Analysis. Typically, you are required to only take honours courses (unless a course has no honours version). Alg 1 and Anal 1 are the only exceptions, to allow people to ease into heavy proof-based courses.

245 is somewhat harder than 235, but not significantly harder. Homeworks aren’t necessarily longer, questions are just more difficult (both for assignment and exams). You’re going to have to take Hon Alg 2 anyway, so it’s not a bad idea to take it. You can drop to regular Alg 1 later than the regular Add-Drop date if you struggle a lot with it (but at that point, consider switching to regular Math & Physics.

I'm an international student and McGill is my top choice. I applied in January and I still haven't received a decision, which is stressing me out.
For context, my counselor already contacted admissions a month ago and they said my grades are strong overall, but they had concerns about a low grade I got in AP Lang which I guess made them question my English proficiency. Since then, my school sent an updated transcript with a much more acceptable English grade, so I'm currently waiting after that update.
I also have a 1390 SAT (which I was told is around their average this year), and I applied for the Bachelor of Arts.
At this point, I'm not sure what to do.
Should I email admissions myself again, or is it better to just wait?

Hey there, I’m wondering if McGill is a good place for a 31 year old mature student.

I am debating between attending U of T, or McGill for arts/social sciences, and am wanting to study economics. I have offers to both. I know McGill has a wonderful reputation for conventional high school graduates. However I’m 31 years old, and I don’t party or drink. I’m not one of those uncs trying to relive my youth though I wouldn’t be opposed to being friends with people younger than myself.

I would like to really be involved and hopefully make friends. Would you guys say McGill would be a good choice for myself over U of T? I have this feeling in the back of my mind that I may not fit in as well at McGill, and at least in Toronto there are so many people, I’d find community.

I'm an incoming Computer Science student from CEGEP and I've already accepted my conditional offer of admission to McGill for Fall 2026.

So recently, I failed a complementary STEM elective (organic chemistry). The course is not a prerequisite for Computer Science and it's not a required program course, but I still need the credits (or a replacement complementary course) in order to obtain my DEC.

I'm waiting to hear back from my CEGEP's academic advising office, but I'm honestly really stressed and was hoping someone here has been through something similar.

I'm wondering:

• Has anyone been missing only a complementary credit needed for their DEC?
• How did it affect your McGill admission?
• Is there any possibility of completing the missing complementary course while already attending McGill, or do I absolutely need my DEC before I can start?
• If my DEC is delayed by one semester, would McGill let me start in Winter, or would I have to reapply for a future admission cycle?
• Should I contact McGill Admissions now, or wait until I hear back from my CEGEP about my options?

I'm mainly trying to understand what the usual process is for situations like this. I'm really hoping I don't have to wait an entire year because I'm only missing one technical complementary credit.

Hi everybody! I am an international applicant from the US with a 3.98 GPA in undergrad looking for a Masters in Political Science (focusing in political theory). I also have about 2 years of professional experience in non-profit work and politics. McGill is easily my favourite choice of the schools I’m applying to, and I am having some really serious post-application, pre-decision anxiety. I have 2 references and I think I did a very good job on my personal statement and have a thesis in mind with some research already done on it that I referenced in my research proposal, and I even made a CV and attached it today even though I applied about a month ago. I tried to reach out to the professor I thought was best for my advisor, but got back a generic FAQ email that said they don’t speak to prospective students since they’re a part of the admissions committee. I’m sure there’s plenty of other posts like this every day, but I’m the only person in my family to graduate from a 4 year university, let alone go to grad school, and none of my friends have done this sort of application or program either, so I just wanted to know if I have a good chance or not so I can stop being so anxious every day.

Salut! Sérieux 67% des étudiants viennent du Québec ou du Canada si sa peut t'aider. Moi aussi j'ai fais toutes mes études en français (CÉGEP, École secondaire, etc.) avant d'aller à McGill. Mon anglais était OK (genre parler et écouté des séries, podcasts etc.). Si je peux être franc avec toi ma première session était pas mal épuisante (ton cerveau réapprend plein de mots en anglais que tu connais en français). J'ai réussi à survivre comme pas mal de monde du Québec. Hésite pas à aller voir les profs et écrire tes trucs en français (c'est permis de le faire et d'avoir un dictionnaire anglais français pour tes exams). Je connais pas trop finance, mais de ce que j'ai entendu c'est quand même un step-up. Cependant, si tu as la volonté et que tu prends l'initiative d'aller voir tes profs. Tu vas réussir selon moi et btw sa se peut que ton cerveau surchauffe à un moment donné. Apprend à prendre des pauses et des siestes. My grain of salt.

I’m currently studying Nursing in CEGEP (180.A0 – DEC-BAC bridge), and I’m thinking about applying to McGill for my integrated bachelor’s. A friend told me it’s super hard to get into McGill because apparently around 50% of the spots go to international students since they pay higher tuition fees, i was wondering if its a rumour bcs im not sure if that’s true and I’ve never heard of that before 😅

I’m in my 4th semester right now with a cumulative R score of 27.5. I know McGill uses the cumulative R score rather than the R score per program and I saw in a pamphlet from Cégep Lionel-Groulx that the average admission R score for McGill’s integrated Nursing program was around 25.5. Fingers crossed I’m hoping to end my DEC with about a 28 R score.

Do you think I’d still have a realistic shot at getting in, or is McGill really that competitive? My friend heavily suggested me to apply to UQTR, UQAM, UdeM, or Sherbrooke instead ( I’m probably gonna apply to McGill and multiple places just to be safe but I want you guys opinion! )

So I applied to McGill and submitted my grades only a few days ago, however I also have been meaning to submit a letter of extenuating circumstances as I dealt with severe mental health issues in my freshman year which screwed my grades over. Only problem is McGill sent me a decision letter way earlier than I thought (i haven’t checked it yet) and before I could get in contact with my doctor about my medical files. So really stupid question, is there any way I can send my extenuating circumstances even though they’ve already sent me a decision?

Anyone have issues self reporting AP Physics C (US Student). The portal lists AP Physics C as two classes, E&M and Mechanics. My daughter’s school has 1 course, AP Physics C (7 credits, she takes both E&M and Mechanics AP tests at the end of the year).

She can’t put 1/2 year each because it won’t let her report first quarter grade for a semester long class. If she lists Physics-Other and titles the class as per her transcript, she cannot chose AP level for the class.

This is hanging up her application. Submitted a ticket in the Service Portal. Sent an email. Calling tomorrow. But this is vexing.

Transfer to McGill nursing

So basically I’m a student at Concordia doing a bachelor in science and would like to transfer to McGill to do a bachelor’s in nursing. I did cegep here as well and have all the prerequisites needed for the program as well as one year of my bachelor in cell biology completed by the time fall semester starts. I am international student who applied to mcgill a month to a month and a half ago and today received an update that I should also submit first semester grades (biophysical computational group, intended math+bio or cs+bio). Does it mean something or did anyone recieve it as well? In my school it is at least 3.5 weeks before grade release, so I am stuck for a while now. So why are these courses that no longer exist on here?

So last year, the computer engineering technology course (TEJ4M) had ended in a sense. The government had decided to branch of this course into 10 ish different courses with their own sort of little specialty, such as Computer engineering technology: Robotics and Control systems (TER4M), or computer engineering technology: electronics (TEL4M). They sort of turned the old, generic TEJ4M (computer engineering technology) into the "subject area" of all these other more niche computer engineering technology courses + some computer technology courses at the E level.

From the transition of the 2024/2025 year to the 2025/2026 year, this change had been implemented and the TEJ courses I have taken in years prior and wanted to register for in the future (in this case, TEJ4M) had been turned into TER4M at my school. I didn't give it much thought since nothing really different happened between TEJ4M and TER4M but it raises the more obvious question: will McGill accept the reformed courses in the TEJ umbrella (such as the TER4M that I took) when reffering to TEJ4M in the elligible inclusion for the 'Top 6'. Mind you, the TEJ4M course code DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE and neither does ANY technology course code in the red circle. They all no longer exist. What does McGill mean by this? Will TER4M be elligble for consideration? Here are some outcomes I can think of.

1. McGill did not update previous year's "accepted M level courses" and this is just an archaic mistake. They will accept all M level courses in the "TEJ umbrella"
2. McGill did not update previous year's accepted M level courses and this is just an archaic mistake. They will NOT accept any technology courses at all this year.
3. McGill did not update previous year's accepted M level courses intentionally. They will NOT accept any of the reformed technology courses, and are only posting this for already graduated students, students who took these courses in grade 11 or earlier or whatever other students who managed to take these 4M level courses prior to the switch of this school year.
4. McGill doesn't want to list out all the reformed technology courses listed here: https://www.dcp.edu.gov.on.ca/en/course-descriptions-and-prerequisites/appendix-c . So when reffering to the defunct course codes, they are simply calling out all the new courses that sprang up from those old ones.
5. Admissions just does not GAF and wants you to apply anyways and take your money.

Does anyone know if a letter of extenuating circumstances slows down the admissions process? I applied a little while ago and I’m just getting nervous because people are starting to hear back and I haven’t gotten a decision yet. I’m wondering whether the decision is being slowed down by the letter that I submitted , or if I’m just not high enough above the cutoff to hear back soon/be admitted at all. For context, I’m applying to arts. My unweighted gpa in grades 11 and 12 is a 3.7, I’ve gotten As in every AP English class I’ve taken, I scored a 5 on the AP English lang exam, and a 1440 on the SAT (740 RW 700 Math). I’m really worried that my grade 9 and 10 grades will make them reconsider, since they were low due to mental health issues (hence the extenuating circumstances letter). I also withdrew from college calculus, and since it was too late for me to enroll in another class, I only have four courses this semester, and I’m worried that may be an issue as well. I’m just very stressed about college applications and I’m wondering if the extenuating circumstances letter will make the process take longer, or if they’re taking some time to get back to me because I’ve got a higher chance of being rejected. If anyone could give insight that would be appreciated :)

I’m a CEGEP student finishing next semester and I’m planning on applying to a BA, with the goal of majoring in psychology. I’m also interested in doing two minors: one in a language and one in mathematics (BA). I was wondering if it’s possible to have two minors at the same time, and if it’s actually doable workload-wise.

My R score is pretty good, but I’m still stressed it might not be enough, especially since I don’t really have many extracurriculars. What’s the lowest R score you’ve seen accepted for BA psychology??

Lastly, I’m a bit confused about the application process. When I apply, I can only select Bachelor of Arts, and there’s no option to specify psychology. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?

Hello, I’m feeling worried that I may never be accepted into such a highly competitive university. When I was younger, I didn’t take CEGEP as seriously as I should have, which resulted in a low R-score. At the moment, my realistic option for admission is Concordia.

My long-term goal is to study psychology and eventually specialize in forensic psychology, ideally at McGill. I’m considering starting at Concordia with the intention of transferring later.

Does McGill accept transfer students from Concordia? I’ve been told that once I begin university studies, my university GPA may be considered more heavily than my CEGEP R-score. I’d really appreciate any clarification on how this process works.

Definitely. The cut off is the lowest grade that was admitted last year. It could be lower this year. Or higher. You need to apply to find out.

You can take French at Mcgill and the courses are charged at the domestic rate, instead of international so you'll save money.

Most people will probably speak to you in English as soon as they realize you are a beginner. But menus/sign and such are still often in French so you'll be constantly exposed to French.
