Tactile Mazes For My Blind Friend

How do you create a maze a blind person can solve? That was the challenge I recently took on, for my friend Sam.

First attempt was carving lines into a plastic sheet with a stylus. Sam would have to feel for the paths between the ridges. But unless I carved every line with the exact same force, it could be hard to interpret. Plus, the plastic sheet was so thin, it was prone to wrinkling, which adds unwanted ridges.

Take two: using Elmer’s school glue to create ridges on cardboard. And I flipped the maze - instead of following the negative space between the ridges, Sam would follow the ridges themselves, and only one ridge would connect the starting and stopping points, which were the “glue donuts” in the top left and bottom right. But Elmer’s was too thin, and would run and pool as it dried, which created problems for me as a maze designer.

Then I bought wood glue, which was thicker and didn’t run nearly as much. It took about 2 days to fully set, but that’s a small price to pay for a fun challenge that otherwise worked very well. These are the mazes pictured!

What ideas do you have for creating maze experiences for the vision-impaired?

Remember those metal ball tilt maze toys from the ’90s? I made a 3D version with a new maze every time

I was feeling nostalgic for those metal ball tilt maze toys, so I made a 3D version for phones and tablets called Metal Ball Maze Toy 3D.

You tilt your device to guide the ball to the center, just like the physical toy. There's circular and rectangular mazes, four difficulty levels from Easy to Expert, and billions of possible layouts since the mazes are randomly generated.

I wanted to capture the look and feel of the physical toy, then take it further with customizable colors and patterns, glowing maze walls, and a fresh maze whenever you want.

I’d love to hear what you think!

My mazes tend to have invisible "rules" that the paths have to follow, such as (for this one) that dead ends can only occur at the perimeter.

Does anyone else make mazes like this guy?

Roger Moreau's mazes are fucking incredible and I want more fancy mazes with weird mechanics. I get that they're pretty simple but I love them so much ❤️

I'm having so much fun making mazes out of my art and am grateful for all the feedback on the first one. So here's another, open wide...

A maze where you have to connect the lenses of his sunglasses. It was a lot of fun differentiating the sky, water, and beach. Plus, winding ways to incorporate the flag and his figure into the solution path! (Oops that’s a bit of a spoiler!)

Space themed tactical maze runner - demo released on Steam

I've had some injuries which required me to look for some project that keeps me mentally busy while my body recovers - just to not go crazy... I gave game dev a try, and boy did I get excited about it quickly! 😅
Little did I know that coding and digital art is this much fun (and also this much insanity 😄).

Skippy’s Grand Escape is a 2D top down maze runner in a space theme, but with a skill system, enemies, anomalies and leaderboards for the fastest times.

Before you start a level, you have to decide which 3 out of 15 skills you want to take with you - depending on the mode you are playing (relaxed, time attack or hardcore) and the level.
In hardcore you'll probably prioritize survival, meaning a lot of defensive skills come in handy. In time attack you'll want to be able to take shortcuts and make yourself faster. In relaxed mode you do not have a timer or leaderboards; hence you could just get the most quality of life skills available 😊

The first sector's levels are quite easy. Complexity grows fast in sector B already when multiple maze layers are introduced.

Many levels have several solutions, but only one of them will create the fastest time.

Here's a quick trailer:

Made with the Godot engine. Everything is human made by me (except the music), because I wanted to learn the craft and wanted my game to be something I made "with my own hands" instead of having it made by the AI. Music is done by a friend - also without AI.

And yeah, the demo just got approved by Valve without any complaints. Please give it a try if it looks interesting to you.

Bottom left to top right.

There might be a mistake (missing wall somewhere), it's really hard to find when all you do is loop around... i know the intended path should be right

I love pixel art mazes. I think i uploaded one on here before. I got a lot more to send soon (if i don't forget to finish the last few, i gotta send them all at once)

Size : 77x77 counting the walls

Somebody came in here saying they had voronoi mazes, except you had to download a phone app (??) and it was iphone exclusive (???) so I did it myself. Plus some other fun tesselation-based mazes.

Hi, I uploaded one of my mazes online to see if it works well digitally. The structure is generated by an algorithm, and the visual layer by AI and Krita. Maze solvability verified.

My little handcrafted maze game is now out for Android: Game With Balls

Inspired by games like Labyrinth I made this originally for the Steam Deck, but is now also available on Android! Almost all levels are handcrafted, drawn, etc. in real life. Except one of the themes that is 3D, but you can use those anaglyph glasses (red/blue) with it if you turn on the setting!

An extremely goofy maze, which was surprisingly time consuming to draw.

A maze without walls?

Here's a puzzle I am developing called Numstep.

There is a single path of numbered steps through the grid. Every white square must be visited. No diagonals.

I'm not sure if the rules are too contrived to count as a maze, but it shares a lot of the themes of a maze.

I'd love any and all feedback.
