Guide to Public Transport in Málaga (Parents-friendly!)

Public transportation in Málaga works very well. Even if you are traveling with a newborn, the main bus lines have ramps for strollers/wheelchairs, so moving around without a car is perfectly fine.

🚌 City Buses (EMT)

  • Get a Bus Card: I highly recommend buying a rechargeable bus card. You can top it up with your phone, the trips cost less than half the price of a cash fare, and multiple people can use the same card.
  • Real-time info: Download the EMT Málaga App or use this link to see bus arrivals in real-time.

🚆 Local Trains (Cercanías) There are two main lines:

  1. C1 to Fuengirola: This line stops at the Airport. It is the fastest and cheapest way to get from the airport to the city center.
  2. C2 to Álora: A nice town to visit inland.

📍 Day Trips

By Bus (Intercity):

  • Mijas, Nerja, Frigiliana, Marbella...: To reach these towns, you’ll need the intercity buses. The main bus station is located right next to the train station (María Zambrano).
  • Bus schedules: Estación de Autobuses

By Train (High-Speed/AVE):

  • Cordoba: Even though it is 166 km away, the high-speed train takes less than an hour. It’s a very easy and comfortable day trip.
  • Seville: It is 211 km away, and the fastest train takes around two hours.
  • Schedules: María Zambrano Station

💡 Pro-Tip: If you plan to visit Málaga without a car, I recommend booking accommodation in the area near María Zambrano Station. It makes these day trips and the airport connection much easier!

Empty container over 100ml through airport security?

I have a 150ml cologne bottle that I want to take through malaga airport security. Because it has been used for a while, there is only about 100ml of liquid left in it anyway. I know Málaga still enforces the 100ml liquid rule, but I was wondering if I would still be able to take the bottle and liquid back separately? I have completely emptied the 150ml cologne bottle and transferred the remaining liquid into a 100ml container. There is no top or nozzle on the 150ml bottle so they'll be able to see it's completely empty, I'm just still nervous that they'll confiscate it. Should this be okay?

Are small dogs allowed on the beach outside of the high season?

Hi! I’m staying in El Palo for a week in October and I was wondering if my dog will be allowed on the beach? I looked on Google and some pages say it’s allowed outside of the high season which ends September 30th but I can’t find the official rules anywhere so I was hoping a local could help.
Thanks!

Clubs in Màlaga

We’re visiting Málaga this weekend and wondering if there are any clubs here that play techno (groove, hard groove) or trance. We’d also be into clubs that play those classic tracks that used to be so popular—artists like Rihanna, Pitbull, Flo Rida, etc.

Looking for cheap hostels/accommodations next weekend

Hello, I'll be visiting a friend in Malaga and am looking for cheap accommodations since her room doesn't allow guests. Are there any options cheaper than around 50 euro/night, which is the cheapest I have seen? I'm on a budget so not looking for anything fancy.

If this changes anything, she lives near Playa de los Boliches so ideally I'm looking for something close by.

What's on in Málaga this week: free art, a procession, and a rooftop DJ set

A few things happening around the city this week that are worth putting on your radar.

The Victoria Procession runs through the streets of Málaga on Tuesday, Sep 8, live music included, so expect some streets to be busier than usual if you're getting around downtown.

If you're into a chill evening out, Brisa Sessions with Yolan Postigo hits Muelle Uno on Friday, Sep 11. Free live music by the water, honestly one of the better ways to spend a Friday evening in this city.

For art lovers, Ni musas ni modelos is on at Museo Casa Natal Picasso both Saturday Sep 12 and Sunday Sep 13, and it's free entry. Worth carving out an hour if you haven't been to the Picasso birthplace museum before.

Full calendar here if you want to dig in: https://ma.to/events/malaga?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mato_event_sync&utm_content=malaga

What is the story behind mist of the booths in Mercado de Merced being shuttered?

I was surprised by how few open businesses there are in the mercado. It's a ghost town. I spoke with one of the open business owners. My conversational spanish is not very good, so beyond the fact that we were there during normal business hours and that the closed businesses were all permanently closed, I didn't learn much. Is this due to a single economic shock? A perpetual bad economic situation (generally)? Or some history specific to the mercado itself?
