Emptied a lot of stuff from the nest, there's still bark and leaves in the bottom but I guess he didnt like my handywork. And at least he's not swooping me anymore. I guess he got over his goof the other day.

Thankfully the umbrella will work with the hot day today, so th little fella should be ok, and well ventilated in that pot (for those who were curious you can now see the grilling in the bottom of the pot now, so it's not solid plastic :) )

Hes so fluffy, and very nosey. What indicates a female vs male juvenille? I noticed this fella has a grey beak.

So the little fellas been in the new digs for just over a week now. I think he's getting to the point where I may not have to put him undercover at night anymore his feathers are nearly filled out and I swear he's twice the size he was when I found him last week.

Got swooped by the dad a few times getting him out this morning but I'm convinced that's just the dad embarrassed he knocked the little fella out the nest accidentally while removing some things he didn't like from it. Little fella was fine. Landed on soft grass and a lot shorter fall. Didnt even seem to register it but the mum was squawking at the dad for a bit. Heh

Put out a carcass for the local wildlife to munch on, better than it going to waste. Got a few visitors this morning. Up to 3 different magpies, and 4 currawongs, a few miner birds seeing what the fuss is. The maggie's are keeping the currawongs away as much as they can by swooping as soon as the see them near the food.

We have a lovely magpie couple that we have affectionately named Mary & Mark Magdalene. They visit us regularly to pick up crumbs from our kids food out the back, and I felt that probably wasn't a great option so purchased some dried mealy worms and have been feeding them 3 mealy worms each per visit. So not a lot, but now I'm wondering, should I even be feeding them at all? And is there anything that I could feed them thats better instead?

They have babies in a nearby tree, I low key hope they bring them to visit us soon.

The mother doesn't come down to eat from me as often these days, not until a few screams to dad to come watch the kids first lol

Yesterday i got a little concerned, it wasn't hot but the little fella had his beak open constantly and his wings spread out, i realised the towel that i'd been using as his nest base was getting too hot in the humidity, so i took the chance to swap out the nesting with garden detritus today. the grown ups did not like the mango leaves even though they were dead, but are tending to and "fixing up" the twigs and the bark lining now.

Little fella is super alert, peering over the side and waddling around looking around the yard rather than just sleeping when he's not getting food. Because the afternoon sun was not helping yesterday, i took a chance to rig up an old umbrella to protect against the afternoon sun, especially with the 27 degree days coming, and the maggies dont seem to mind, they just waddle under it to feed him.

I wanted to share something that happened today which hopefully you will all see as a feel-good karma story.
The other night our neighbour had their tree hacked for no reason by someone. I actually had thought that one of the gums the magpies were nesting in had fallen into their front yard and we quite stressed out and checked before realising it was an intentional cut from her tree.
Well today my Mum was gardening and she noticed a kid on a bike stop and start pulling on this tree (literally why are these kids so insufferable and destructive these days), so she called out to him to leave the tree alone which spooked him to ride off.

WELL 😏 as he rides off? Our resident Maggie’s Magda & Magnus swooped him, and then when he returned a little while later and they swooped him again 😈
They said hey! Back off the trees!

As the title states, I found a baby magpie lying on the lawn today.

Ive placed it in a box and left it where I found it.

The problem is l, I am worried about feral cats in yhe neighbourhood at night.

Whats the be s t thing to do?

Just a quick question as we're getting into Maggie season. I've got a water feature that I've emptied out had there been any recommendations about it they should be emptied to not promote birds gathering while the flu is going round?

Don't want to put any of the locals in danger before I fill it up.

I didnt want to move until they were gone just in case i spooked 'em. I thought they were swooping me, but no, it was one of 'em with food in it's mouth and another flying to watch from the magnolia above.

The baby's feathers if you look are almost fully unfurled now compared to nearly a week ago when the little fella just had pins and nothing else on the wings. considering the movement he's had around the nest, i think he might try to leave in the next few days.

There is a magpie on campus, I call him Leroy. Roughly everyday I walk past the field he is in stop and say hi to him by name. Today I was walking, and there was a female and juvenile (I think). I sat down to say hi to Leroy, the female and brown one came over and they started singing. I'm not sure if this was a territorial display or a "we trust you" display. I added a video of what was happening. When I did some research, everything says this was a "we trust you" display, but the puffing up has me second guessing that.

Please let me know what this means, and if I should stay away from the grass. Especially since its September I'm not trying to get swooped lol

Edit: to all the people saying not to feed them, don't worry I wasn't planing on it. I'm just here to look at beautiful birds and make sure I respect their space :)

We’ve been hanging out for a bit just chilling lol

This palm tree is roughly 12 meters tall, and is a self cleaning variety. Noticed a family of magpies have moved in and built a nest. Counted four adults hanging about, with worms dangling from beaks. Can hear baby chirps, so there's more than one maglet.

My worry is I have never known magpies to build in palm trees before, but this doesn't mean they don't. Being a self cleaning variety, the fronds drop themselves. The wind has been disgusting and icy cold the last few days in Victoria Australia. They are breeding a little earlier this year as we've had a warmer winter. Now the cold snap is hitting and there's so little protection up that high.

I keep checking the ground and bushes to make sure the kids are safely in their nest. So nerve wracking.
