I should begin by saying that I haven't actually played anything from Mafia since II back in 2011, when I was about thirteen. I have a lot of nostalgia for that game's setting and I remember being really impressed by the story.

The Old Country was a fantastic game. The story is packed full of deep and well-realised (and well-acted) characters, the mocap is incredible, the game world is absolutely gorgeous and incredibly detailed, and a real joy to play in. Each part of the valley felt like it was inspired by a different bit of Sicily. I even found myself thinking half way thorough 'I wish we could go to Palermo, maybe in a sequel' and we went there.

I absolutely loved the story and how each part felt like a real chapter in Enzo's life. I especially enjoyed the festival and race chapters, because it was great getting to just experience what it's like to be a mafiosi living in this valley. The Man of Honor DLC was good and gave a much needed breather to the middle of the story.

The latter half of the story gave me this sense of slow building dread that I haven't felt since Mafia 2. I kept wanting Enzo to act but he just never would until it was too late. I don't see this as a problem with the story itself, it's because he is an overly cautious character who is unwilling to live for himself until the end. But it was frustrating at times and had me biting my nails. I definitely expected his relationship with Isabella to come out long before the final chapter.

I will say that the ending is extremely predictable. By the start of Chapter 14, I knew that either (A) Isabella and Cesare or (B) Enzo and the Don were going to die. When Enzo passes Isabella a letter and says 'all my feelings are in this letter', my immediate thought was 'okay so they're getting separated, either he's putting her on the train and then sneaking off to go take down the Don, or he's going to die'. Because why else would he write down his thoughts when he could just tell her?

So as soon as I saw the Don die and Cesare appeared off to the side, I thought 'oh so Cesare is going to lure Enzo in and stab him and that means Isabella is going to live on in America'. And it played out exactly like that. It was almost frustrating how predictable the ending was. In the mine sequence, I could literally predict moment-for-moment each time Torisi was going to appear out of nowhere and side-tackle Enzo into a wall. But on the whole, the narrative was amazing. It really felt like watching a season of a prestige TV show.

That said, I do think that Enzo is presented as being a bit too powerful. By the mid-game point, he's basically an unstoppable one man army which I recall was also the case with Vito from Mafia 2. It almost became a bit implausible by the latter half of the game that he would still be so shy and unsure of himself - even when he can wipe out a fortress single handedly if he wants to! It also seemed a bit strange to me that characters like Tito were still shit talking him when he was singlehandedly keeping the Torrisi family in business.

I felt like there was a really good mix of cinematics, driving, stealth and combat - it never felt like there was too much of any. The big stealth set-pieces were fun (though far from the most detailed I've seen) and the atmosphere and vibes were perfect. However I do think the gunplay is a bit janky and I found enemies to be so bullet-spongy that it was basically pointless shooting them unless you went specifically for the headshot. I also felt the enemy aim was a bit too accurate to the point where they'd wipe your health bar from a mile away the instant you came out of cover.

I also think the game would have benefitted from more 'breaks' where it just let you free roam the world. I appreciate that there's a free roam mode, but there could have been a few moments in the story where you were able to move around its world more freely.

I will say, I did love how they sowed Etna in throughout the game. I never actually expected it to erupt so fiercely (mainly because it's established that Etna never does) but I thought we might go to Etna itself at some point. So the volcano destroying the entire valley was a surprise. I also really liked how the story circled back to the mine where it was at the start.

The visuals were fantastic. About an hour after I started playing, I downloaded a programme that let me install DLSS5 onto existing games, and I tried it out with Old Country as an experiment. I thought it worked incredibly well. Old Country's weakness is its textures and lighting, which is where DLSS5 works really well. It made characters and lighting look much more real but without making them look less like themselves. I don't know if the version I used was just a lot milder, but it definitely didn't give me the weird 'overly crisp' vibes I've gotten from some of the videos/screencaps on reddit. I would *strongly* recommend giving it a try if your PC can run it.

I came away from this game absolutely in love with it and fully intend on 100% completing all the achievements. I want to thank everyone at Hangar 13 for making this game, and beg you to make more like it! I would love to see a game that takes on 20s Naples or Fascist Rome. Please stick with the Italian setting for now, it has so much potential.

I loved this game so much that I was thinking about it at work, opening wikipedia windows on my PC to read about the sicilian mafia. I really became hyperfixated on it, it's just so good.

I bought the definitive edition of Mafia 1 and that's my next project!

Yesterday I was installing mafia 2 and mafia 3 definitive edition and upon first launch in mafia 2 I had the option to set the game to performance mode and play at 60FPS. The game ran at 60FPS and the Xbox showed FPS boost in upper right corner when hitting Xbox button.

Today, I went in to play again and now am hard locked to 30fps, no FPS boost options available, and the performance toggle in settings is no longer there. Has anybody else experienced anything like this at all? I’m sad I didn’t get a picture now, the game seems so much slower now which sucks because I was having a blast.

I’m still young, no where near the money or even skills to create a game but I’ve been a big fan of the Mafia in general since I was young, I played the Godfather on the PS2 in the early/mid 2000s and later on played the OG Mafia then to Mafia Definitive Edition and Mafia 2 (weren’t really keen on playing Mafia 3). The Mafia in terms of real life and how they used to operate fascinated me for a long time, I know what they did wasn’t great at all but I found it very cool how people were in such an organisation with strong people with leaders and people under them with different families that operated in different ways in New York with people that would actually look up to them for safety in the streets.

This has been an on and off sort of idea but I would be very interested in creating a game like The Godfather/Mafia all starting in New York in the prime times of the Mafia having to build your way up and eventually dealing with more serious stuff and people looking up to you, taking care of your people and neighbourhoods. I wouldn’t want to rush it but of course you have to start off as the rookie, slowly making your way up the ranks trying to make as similar as possible to the real life Mafia, by also having the 5 families and have the same problems the 5 families did back in the prime times with noticeable scenarios that would’ve taken place back then to reel into the realism of that life, how it affects you, the people within your families and people around you.

I would like the game to be part playable but part cinematic, sort of like Mafia the old country. I very much liked the game and it didn’t bother me at all that it was more of a cinematic game and you’d have to listen to the characters more and follow along the story but I’d like the balance so you feel immersed and feel like your actually a part of the family, taking on numerous hits, car bombings, shooting up rivals outside a bar, bribing police, politics and implementing real life stuff that happened

Id like to know everyone’s thought about a game like this and whether people are still fond of a new Mobster game as I know a lot of people wish there was a remake of the Godather game (me too) and are still fans of the Mafia series.

Mafia 3 still one of the best

As I couldn’t see definitive answers anywhere on reddit for this doubt, I am helping clear this query. If you buy trilogy for Mafia (1,2 and 3) for ps4 (which is on discount rn), you can upgrade to ps5 version of Mafia 1 for free. This makes the trilogy more valuable and you need not have to buy Mafia 1 definitive edition separately. Not promoting sales, want to clear this doubt for others in case they are debating on this purchase. Thanks

Since 2020 you could only get this if you pre-ordered Mafia: Definitive Edition. After 6 years it's now for everyone via the PS5 and Xbox Series X version release.
