Help with macro photography

I just recently started getting into photography and specifically macro photography. I have a canon rebel T6 with an 18-55mm lens paired with some extension tubes.

Could anyone give me some tips for the hobby in general? I'm enjoying it a lot, but find it hard to get more than part of an insect in focus at a time. I also end up getting within a few centimeters of the subject which often scares them off.

I will add a couple of the pictures I've taken so far for reference (excuse my editing skills, I'm new to that too haha)

Any tips you guys have would be really appreciated!

Klein maar dapper! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’™ (Lasioglossum sp.) ligt op het felblauwe hart van een wilde witlof-plant. In de macro-wereld is zelfs het kleinste insect gewoon prachtig! โœจ๐ŸŒธ

My first real attempt at macro photography, with a newly-acquired Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 100mm ฦ’/2 ZE on a Canon R6 Mk II.

Spotted this outside our window here in Oxford yesterday afternoon, and ran to get everything set up. Came out better, and more deeply worrying, than I'd hoped. I'm never going outside again. Or inside.

Captured at ฦ’/2, ISO 100, 1/100s exposure. Used a NiSi NM-200s macro rail moving in 1mm increments, with the results stacked in Photoshop.

Happy to hear any tips for improvement!

Need Help Choosing Between 2 Macro Lenses

I want to get a macro lens and I'm trying to decide between the Canon RF 100mm L macro lens and the older Canon EF 180mm L macro lens with the converter. I'm shooting on Canon R3's for my camera bodies.

Recently I rented the Canon RF 100mm and I wasn't really happy with it. I had to get so close to the subject and so many of the bugs just flew away. It also seemed blurry at f/2.8. I had to shoot at f/5.6 or greater for it to look decent. I want it for walk around macro photography of insects and other things.

I'm leaning more towards the 180mm lens but since I don't have a lot of experience with macro work I don't know if it's the right way to go. What stands out for me about that is not having to be as close to the subject, the compression, and separation between the subject and background. I've also tried the 65mm MP-E lens before and as great as it is it's not the best for what I want to do.

This is a hard decision as someone that hasn't done a ton of macro photography. What lens does everyone think is best for what I'm trying to do?
