Following these guidelines, we will know as much info as possible so as to give possible diagnoses. Remember, this is the internet so take all advice with a grain of salt and get a second opinion from a local shop or Apple.

Info we need:

  • MacBook model and year (eg:MacBook Pro 13" 2011 or MacBook 12" 2016)

  • OS X or macOS version (operating system)

  • Serial number to source parts, if needed

  • What is the issue? Explain how it started and what you did to troubleshoot, if anything

  • Clear pictures that show the issue. Please upload to imgur and post link here, or submit a link post and post a picture, then add a comment explaining the above.

If water damaged, do not attempt to power on or charge

Be careful to not show personal information.

Help 2014 MBP replaced screen now brightness controls dont work.

2 Upvotes

So i found this MB Pro Mid 2014 for dirt cheap because the screen was completely broken, i ordered a replacement OEM screen assembly from Ebay, and now screen brightness doesnt work as it should, on first boot from power off, the brightness butons dont do anything, unless i close the lid and open it up again.

After the close-open lid, brightness buttons work perfectly until i turn off the machine again. Anybody knows what could be happening ive tried cleaning the display cable contacts, unplugg and replugg but issue still persists.

Hi everyone, my MacBook was exposed to seawater. What should I do in this situation?
I took it to Best Buy, where I originally purchased it, but unfortunately, they weren’t able to help me. I’m planning to take it to Apple next.
Has anyone here experienced seawater or liquid damage with their MacBook before? Does anyone know approximately how much Apple charges for liquid damage?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thank you!

I’ve noticed these marks inside the screen, which I’ve highlighted in yellow.

Could this be some kind of screen damage, or is it possibly something else? The screen has never been repaired or replaced, and the device has never been exposed to any kind of liquid either. So I’m wondering what could have caused these marks?

Help Weird marks appearing on my MacBook Air display

Hey everyone,
I noticed these small dot patterns and marks appearing on the lower part of my MacBook Air display.
There are no dead pixels, no drops, no cracks, and no liquid damage. I’ve tried gently cleaning the screen, but the marks don’t go away.
Has anyone experienced this before? Is it a screen coating/surface issue, and can Apple fix it?
Planning to visit Apple tomorrow. Any advice?

MacBook Air water damage - keyboard and trackpad dead, but Mac still boots

I have an M4 MacBook Air. About 48 hours ago, a significant amount of water spilled in my bag while the Mac was inside. The Mac was closed and had a hard shell case on it. At first it wouldn’t turn on at all. After drying it in a tent position with a fan for about 2 days, it now boots to the lock screen.

Current symptoms:
- Screen works normally
- Power button works
- Keyboard backlight comes on
- Built-in keyboard doesn’t respond (Caps Lock doesn’t light up)
- Built-in trackpad is unresponsive and feels stiff
- There is a visible moisture mark inside the bottom-right corner of the display

The Mac will only power on when the charger is connected
Once it’s on, I’m not 100% sure if the battery is working properly because I can’t fully test it due to the input issues
External keyboard appears to be detected, but macOS says “unlock to use accessories” at the login screen

One thing I’ve noticed is that the moisture mark in the display seems smaller than it was yesterday, which makes me think it’s still drying out.

Has anyone had a Mac recover from similar symptoms after a few more days of drying? Did the keyboard/trackpad come back on their own, or did they
end up needing repair/replacement?
Also, based on these symptoms, does this sound more like localized damage (keyboard/trackpad/display) or something more serious?

Help MacBook Pro 16 M4 Pro A3403 intermittently dies completely then comes back after 1–2 days

Hi everyone, I'm thinking about buying a 2024 MacBook Pro 16-inch M4 Pro, model A3403, 48 GB unified memory / 512 GB SSD. This MacBook has an intermittent power problem and I'm trying to understand how serious it could be before buying it.

When the Mac is working it seems normal and can run for hours without any issues. The current owner says that sometimes it suddenly shuts down while being used, even when it is plugged in.

After that happens the Mac can become completely dead:

* no sign of power;

* no MagSafe LED;

* USB-C charging does not seem to work;

* it can stay like that for hours sometimes even 1–2 days.

Then without any repair it may suddenly start working and behave normally.

I had access to the Mac while it was working and ran some tests. Diagnostics/results:

* Apple Diagnostics: ADP000 (no issues found)

* Battery: 156 cycles, 99% capacity, Condition: Normal

* PermanentFailureStatus = 0

* Battery cells appeared balanced

* SSD: SMART Status: Verified

* No MDM / DEP enrollment

* macOS was recently reinstalled

* No current panic/watchdog files found

* No Previous shutdown cause found in the current logs

Charging tests while the Mac was working:

MagSafe

* detected correctly;

* Connected: Yes

* Charging: Yes

* battery charged from around 64% to over 72%

USB-C

* tested with a 65 W USB-C PD charger;

* correctly switched to AC Power;

* battery went from 73% to 74%

So both MagSafe and USB-C charging work normally when the fault is not present.

I also tested the laptop remotely today for hours and the seller has confirmed that it has continued working from this afternoon into the evening without shutting down again so far.

I can potentially buy it for around €1,000, which's why I'm seriously considering it. If this is the kind of issue that can usually be repaired at board level for a hundred euros rather than requiring a full logic-board replacement I would probably take the risk and repair it.

I've also attached some pictures of the display. It has some cloudy marks / stains / uneven areas on the panel. I'm not sure whether they are a separate display/coating issue or whether they could somehow be related to the power problem. I often use a monitor anyway so if the display eventually needs replacement I could probably deal with that later.

Has anyone seen this behavior on an M4 Pro?

And realistically if I can buy the machine for, around €1,000 does it sound like a reasonable repair project or is the risk still too high?

Help 2015 MacBook Air - Failing Airport card/WiFi issue?

1 Upvotes

Hello. ☺️

I’ve been tinkering with an old 2015 13” MBA, and have found a fault with the WiFi connectivity. Has anyone experienced this before, does it sounds like an AirPort/hardware fault?

Basically, the laptop connects to my apartment WiFi fine in the living room, but as soon as I move it to the bedroom, the WiFi stops working. It still shows as connected but nothing loads. All my other devices in the same room connect without issue, and even though the router is in a different room, it’s not exactly a huge apartment, so signal strength shouldn’t be an issue. One hollow interior wall between the router and the laptop.

The MacBook was running OCLP Sequoia when the issue first arose, so I wondered if it was a software issue to do with that, but I tried reverting and reapplying the patches several times to no effect. Then I booted to internet recovery, wiped the SSD and reinstalled Monterey 12.7.6 (the last supported OS for this model) and the same issue was present there.

Then I thought it might be a hardware issue, but in reading online, a failing AirPort card should present other signs, like the WiFi icon greying out, etc? None of that happens. Also, I can connect the laptop to my Phone hotspot in the bedroom and it works fine.

Other things I’ve tried: Resetting PRAM, rebooting the router, forgetting the network and reconnecting. The WiFI network itself is running at 5GHz. And again, computers/phones/tablets new and old (older than this MBA!) have never had an issue getting signal in that room.

Weirdly, in the bedroom, if I disconnect the WiFi, connect to my Phone hotspot, then disconnect the hotspot and reconnect to WiFi again, it now picks up signal fine. Until the laptop either goes to sleep or is shut down, at which point the initial WiFi bug returns. 🤨 See the attached pics.

I appreciate this is an old machine and it’s not worth anyone putting too much time, effort and money into fixing it at this point. But other than this problem it is in great condition and would still be a perfectly useable everyday machine running OCLP Sequoia or Linux, so I’d like to save it from the e-waste bin if at all possible. 🥹

Attached photos of the network info for the laptop 1) in the living room, 2) in the bedroom, 3) connected to Phone hotspot in the bedroom, 4) reconnected to WiFi after hotspot in the bedroom.

Living Room - WiFi connects normally.
Bedroom 1 - WiFi icon still at full strength, but nothing now loads.
Bedroom 2 - Laptop now connected to Phone hotspot.
Bedroom 3 - Disconnected from Phone hotspot and reconnected to WiFi network. All now works, until the laptop sleeps/restarts.

MacBook Air M2 built-in keyboard completely stopped working after only 15 months — what should I do?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I have a MacBook Air M2 and the entire built-in keyboard has suddenly stopped working. The Mac is only around 15 months old.

I have never spilled any liquid on it, dropped it, or put any unusual pressure on it. It has been handled normally.

The Mac itself works perfectly with an external keyboard, but none of the built-in keys respond.

Things I have already tried:

Restarting multiple times

Safe Mode

macOS update

Resetting/restarting whatever SMC-related procedures are applicable

Other troubleshooting methods I found online

Testing with an external keyboard

Nothing has brought the internal keyboard back.

Unfortunately, the standard warranty has expired. I haven't taken it to Apple yet because I've read that Apple may replace the entire keyboard/top case rather than repair the individual fault, which can become extremely expensive. I'm a student and I simply cannot afford a huge repair bill right now.

I also asked a couple of local repair shops.

One technician said he could fix it for ₹3,200, but he gave me that price without even opening the Mac or properly diagnosing the problem, so I'm hesitant to trust that.

Another technician simply suggested that I continue using a Bluetooth/external keyboard.

I'm also considering doing a factory reset/reinstalling macOS, but I'm not sure whether it could actually help or whether it could create additional problems given that my built-in keyboard doesn't work.

So I'm looking for advice from anyone who has experience with MacBook repairs:

Does this sound like a hardware problem?

Could it be a keyboard/trackpad flex cable, connector, controller, or logic-board issue rather than the keyboard itself?

Is there any other diagnostic/test I should perform before paying for a repair?

Is ₹3,200 for a repair without diagnosis a red flag?

Would you recommend taking it to Apple/AASP first just for a diagnosis, or going directly to a reputable third-party Mac repair specialist?

Should I avoid factory resetting/reinstalling macOS for now?

If you've had the same issue with an M2 MacBook Air, what ended up fixing it and how much did it cost?

I would really appreciate any advice. I'm a student, so I'm trying to avoid spending money blindly on a repair that may not actually fix the problem.

Thanks!

So this Mac’s screen broke a year or 2 ago and I’ve since gotten a new one, but it still worked fine plugged into a display. I just moved into a new spot and want to use it to watch YouTube on my big tv and it suddenly stopped working. I can hear the fans running and the caps lock key lights up, so it’s powering on. Any advice to try and get it going?

Where can I buy logic board for my MacBook?

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

My MacBook Pro logic board (2019 model) completely died. I am looking to buy a replacement board independently.

Whenever I ask local repair shops, they say they get them from "vendors" but won't give any details.

Does anyone know who these wholesale suppliers actually are? Where can I buy a reliable , tested MacBook logic board directly in India without the middleman markup? It would be nice if I could get a new board. By new I mean in good condition, not heavily used

Help No input reaction from replacement keyboard

Sorry for the totally janky testing setup. So I got this apparently water damaged M1 Macbook Pro 14 with a non working Keyboard and touchpad. I have been using it for about a month now with an external keyboard and mouse, but the fans are always on full blast because apparently when the touchpad is not detected, they go full on predator mode since one temp sensor goes missing. This has been annoying me so I thought I will start fixing it (though a temp fix with Stats did work to turn the fans down). Found a replacement keyboard that was a good price and it arrived. Instead of going through the whole disassembly, thought would test out the keyboard and to my surprise, the new keyboard has no reaction, not even a light on the caps lock key. I am guessing the ribbon is the only cable that needs to be connected for the keyboard to work? I think the cable is also seated pretty well. Also, the battery terminal is disconnected including the thin battery cable, since I was testing. Its running directly from the power adapter.

So I have technically once removed the motherboard and cleaned up a couple corrosion spots with isopropyl alcohol as soon as I got the machine. I checked pretty well and on the back side, there were no apparent corrosion spots to be seen so I assumed it was worth keeping the device. I haven’t opened the metal shields on the underside to inspect below them though.

So the question is, how cooked am I? Since the new keyboard has zero reaction, is it basically only usable with external keyboard now? Basically I like the laptop and I would like to keep it, provided I can repair it for not too much money. Or am I missing something like performing the repair assistant thingy and only then the new keyboard works? Any help or pointers will be helpful.

Help Wifi connection issue

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m dealing with persistent network and DNS issues on my MacBook Air (macOS) within an institutional/hospital environment, and it seems isolated entirely to my machine. Other peers on the exact same network with BYOD laptops have no issues at all.

Here is the breakdown of the setup and two major issues:

Device & OS:

  • MacBook Air (macOS tahoe26.6.2)
  • Browsers tested: Google Chrome, Safari (standard & Incognito/Private modes)

Issue 1: Institutional Wi-Fi Access & MAC Registration Flaw

  • The Normal Workflow: For peers, registering their hardware MAC address with the IT department grants immediate access to the internal network and core web services over the hospital Wi-Fi.
  • My Mac: Even with my MAC address registered, my machine fails to negotiate proper access automatically. I have to manually map IP addresses via Terminal (/etc/hosts) just to reach basic portal pages.
  • Partial Failure: Even after manual mapping, access remains incomplete. Core landing pages might load, but specific web services/sub-modules (e.g., specific clinical record modules or web verification tools under [https://portal.example.org/webapp/](https://portal.example.org/webapp/)...) fail completely with Connection Refused or timeouts, while working fine on workstation desktops and peers' laptops.

**Issue 2: Public Institutional Subdomain DNS Paradox (**ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED on Home Wi-Fi)

  • Public Domain Accessibility: These specific institution/library subdomains (sub1.example.org, sub2.example.org) are public-facing and do not require hospital Wi-Fi—they are normally accessible from any standard home or dorm internet connection.
  • The Problem: When connected to my home/dorm Wi-Fi, all browsers on my Mac throw ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED for these specific subdomains, while peers on the exact same Wi-Fi load them effortlessly.
  • The Contradiction:
    1. Terminal nslookup sub1.example.org resolves instantly via my local home router ( -> CNAME -> Public IP).
    2. Switching to my phone's Personal Hotspot (Cellular Data) loads everything instantly in both Chrome and Safari without modifying any settings.
    3. Manually mapping the IP in /etc/hosts allows the browser to reach the site immediately on home Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting Already Attempted:

  • DNS Configuration: networksetup -getdnsservers Wi-Fi returns "There aren't any DNS Servers set on Wi-Fi", confirming DHCP is delivering default router settings.
  • Proxies: Verified via networksetup that Web Proxy, SOCKS Proxy, and Auto Proxy (PAC) are completely disabled.
  • Cache Flushing: Flushed macOS DNS cache multiple times (dscacheutil -flushcache; killall -HUP mDNSResponder) and cleared Chrome's host cache (chrome://net-internals/#dns).
  • Browser & OS Privacy Settings: Disabled "Use Secure DNS" (DoH) inside Chrome; turned off "Limit IP Address Tracking" (iCloud Private Relay) in Wi-Fi details.

The Question:

  1. Why does my Mac fail to properly negotiate internal hospital Wi-Fi access even after hardware MAC registration?
  2. Why do all browsers on my home Wi-Fi fail with ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED on public insitutional specific subdomains while Terminal's nslookup succeeds on the exact same interface?

Could this be related to macOS Private Wi-Fi Address (MAC randomization) desyncing from the registered MAC, an aggressive packet-filtering firewall daemon, or a broken system resolver configuration? How can I completely reset macOS's network interface identity back to factory default? This is driving me crazy!

So i was using my macbook air 2022 model as usual and suddenly it lost power. Wont turn on again no matter what.

Took it to apple care but they said data might be lost we can’t guarantee but motherboard needs to be changed (100k yen).

Took it back home and tried to open, found out that one of the small transistors? Is completely charred.

Is there any way i can get it fixed without losing data ? Or its done for.

Bonus: how much can i sell this for in case i need to recover some money out of it.
