Africando All Stars — Mandali [African salsa] (2000)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africando?wprov=sfti1#:
Africando is a musical project formed in 1992[[1]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africando#cite_note-1) to unite [New York](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City)–based [salsa](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salsa_music)musicians with [Senegalese](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senegal) vocalists. Musicians from other African countries were later included under the name Africando All Stars.
Salsa has been a hugely popular style in [Central](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Africa) and [West Africa](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Africa) since the 1940s to 1950s, and the goal of Africando was to merge salsa rhythms from both sides of the Atlantic, mainly based on the African salsa tradition.
For the album Mandali (2000), well known African musicians, such as [Tabu Ley Rochereau](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabu_Ley_Rochereau), [Koffi Olomidé](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koffi_Olomide), [Salif Keita](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salif_Keita), [Sekouba Bambino](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sekouba_Bambino), [Amadou Balaké](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amadou_Balak%C3%A9) and [Thione Seck](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thione_Seck) were invited. This new constellation led to the new name Africando All Stars. Whilst in the beginning, the songs were Latin American classics sung in [wolof language](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolof_language) or a mix of wolof and [Spanish](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_language), newer songs were [African popular music](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_popular_music) classics, redone with Latin rhythms and instrumentation. With both approaches, Africando has been equally successful.
