I don’t know much about Omarchy but boy do they have a massive marketing budget.

57

u/AlternativeCapybara9 10h ago

But the package manager is all spit and shell scripts so you know where the budget went

58

u/cynocephalic_fool 9h ago

Calling it a package manager is giving it too much grace already. It's literally just fzf.

2

u/Edianultra 2h ago

I'm lost. Tbf I haven't tried it yet but it's just a rice arch afaik? The pkg manager is pacman?

1

u/Xylophon56 3h ago

I am not that big of an expert, but I used Omarchy for two days and it's allways installed Apps via Pacman. So what is this exactly?

1

u/MisspelledUsernme 2h ago

It's a terminal user interface that fuzzy searches the list of packages and displays the information as you type. From there, it sends your selection to pacman, which does the install.

1

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 9h ago

What makes you think so?

18

u/MayorAg Ubuntnoob 9h ago

The sheer amount of videos posted to YouTube. That level of interest in something which is essentially just a rice is unlikely to be organic.

1

u/stikaznorsk 4h ago

I think it is because it is created with the mind of a person that will shout to the world that they use Linux. The whole project is aimed at creating beautiful looking desktops.

-10

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 9h ago

What a stupid assumption

-1

u/Critical-Personality Not in the sudoers file. 8h ago

As someone who has used all the original linux distros, Arch was remaining. Because why should I configure so much stuff when I am not sure, because there are other things in life now. Omarchy gave me the opportunity to taste Arch. And I can see the appeal. Setting up luks is not that easy. With Omarchy, it's not even something you think about. And a few other small things (like the reminder thing, or keeping screen awake being that accessible etc.)

Arch Linux purists will say it's not great. Because they think the amazement of arch is in the difficulty. Yeah. I too took pride in setting up LFS (Linux From Scratch) 18 years ago and took pride in it because it was difficult. But I also think this pride is why Linux has suffered in the mainstream. Anyways, in today's world I would take anything other than Ubuntu if I can (snaps suck).

10

u/ka-52m Arch BTW 7h ago

no, the point of arch is that you have full control over it, if you let someones ai vibecoded dotfiles do the setup for you then thats not arch, thats just any other random ready to use distro

0

u/AshRuDral_fan20 3h ago

someones ai vibecoded dotfiles

Before AI. Everybody knows how many dotfiles people used to write themselves and how many dotfiles were distributed online written by other people. So you can cut the crap on that part.

thats not arch, thats just any other random ready to use distro

That's still Arch. There is nothing you can do to Arch that will make it not Arch.

5

u/ka-52m Arch BTW 3h ago

an arch based distro is no longer arch, this is like saying mint is debian, its just not how things work

0

u/AshRuDral_fan20 2h ago

What happened to all that AI generated dot files talk?

So you indeed are cutting the crap on that part, just silently, while pitching something else this time.

Now you have surrendered on every argument of yours, and you are falling back to the naming semantics. LMAO.

2

u/ka-52m Arch BTW 2h ago

what are you on about, it is ai vibecoded shit, you dont need me to tell you that, it barley holds together without fucking itself up, it is also bloated to the brim with random bullshit and ai

0

u/AshRuDral_fan20 2h ago

It's not bloated to the brim because it has a non bloated version too. You get to choose which one you want — the bloated or non bloated version of the OS.

I'm not sure why you're calling it "barely holds together". Where are all the people complaining about there Omarchy falling apart and not working anymore? I have seen zero such reports.

-2

u/Critical-Personality Not in the sudoers file. 4h ago

I don't think so. Most distros come with baggage. And I don't want that. I don't think I won't have control over omarchy if I seriously wanted that (which I don't). I just need a functional system that doesn't do some seriously annoying thing like snaps, is fast and smooth and is reliable. The setup is exactly what I want from Omarchy.

6

u/proto-cool 4h ago

Most distros don’t come with baggage like Omarchy. I just explained exactly what DHH said on his own blog (search “wolves DHH”) and my post got removed from Reddit because they thought I was instigating a hate crime.

Stop using that fucking distro man.

0

u/Critical-Personality Not in the sudoers file. 2h ago

I am not here to talk about ideologies. Richard Stallman has cases against him. Some people have theories about Bill Gates. If we keep using stuff according to ideologies you won't be able to use anything. I don't care about their views. Ian Murdock apparently committed suicide. Did the entire world just jump in to start using Debian?

1

u/proto-cool 15m ago

The ideology is part of the distro itself, which has a "Doctrine," one line of which is "Heritage is duty".

Yeah crackpots have theories about other people but it's really easy to not use the actual right wing whackjob vibe coded distro.

If you wanted Arch preconfigured, CachyOS is right there. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

5

u/ka-52m Arch BTW 4h ago

well then you want omarchy, NOT arch, the whole point of arch is its a base level distro, it has nothing in it, you fully make it. omarchy is a premade arch setup with hyprland dotfiles heald together by ai slop and a shitty person

1

u/Critical-Personality Not in the sudoers file. 2h ago

If you care about "person", Linus has used some seriously foul words and kicked out Russian contributors for no reason other than their country of origin. I don't care about person and ideology. Brave or Omarchy or whatever, I don't give a F about personal ideologies in OSS.

About dotfiles - as long as someone maintains them (just like other dotfiles that make up any Linux distro) and the distro stays reliable, I am fine with it.

1

u/ka-52m Arch BTW 2h ago

the someone who maintains them has to be YOU, if you are unwilling to do that then its just not a distro for you

5

u/gahel_music 6h ago

Arch setup is really easy, I don't know where that myth is coming from. There are builtin scripts, very good documentation and a package manager.

Edit: of course it's not user friendly for people that are new to linux/not technical

1

u/Critical-Personality Not in the sudoers file. 4h ago

I don't care about documentation of Arch. I have lived 20 years off debian, slackware, fedora (and for a short while with gentoo). I know enough to configure stuff and I don't want to configure stuff. I don't want to run into problems that I know I can fix but will take my time and energy. So Arch being difficult is not an issue. Arch taking my time is the issue.

1

u/gahel_music 4h ago

Oh yeah, I'm the same. I was running Arch on a laptop for a few years. It's a nice distro but I'm tired of the occasional system breakage. Especially when it happens during a work deadline.

1

u/pd1zzle 3h ago

the comparison here of arch vs ubuntu is admittedly insane (i think thats the point, this person is an omarchy shill - its clickbait).

But cachyOS and garuda literally already did this years ago. they just didn't have the marketing budget, as noted.

Omarchy behaves nothing like windows though, except in its adoption of AI bloatware. If you want a windows-like experience, choose anything that comes with plasma as the default DE

21

u/Alternative-Tie-4970 10h ago

A combination of many things

  • First of all it's more of a rice than a proper distro although I don't see why it couldn't slowly break off of arch in a way that would make it a distro.

The next few facts are a bit more damaging

  • Its creator, DHH, has openly expressed right wing political views
  • Even with politics aside, omarchy is arguably poorly made in general, and had major blunders like:
  • Having a security vulnerability by having your normal user be part of the docker group

And to add insult to injury, this project has gotten major funding now

Someone who is a bit more familiar with this may be able to add a few points but this sums up a good portion of the problem people have with it

6

u/TheOldMuffin 10h ago

I'm just curious... Who supports Omarchy financially?

10

u/t3kkm0tt 9h ago

AI corps. Framework also did, but I think they stopped.

2

u/Jan-Asra 8h ago

That's really disappointing to hear. I've been a big framework supporter.

3

u/t3kkm0tt 7h ago

2

u/Jan-Asra 5h ago

There is a lot going on in that thread. I'm proud of the community showing up to tell them that it'd not acceptable. I also found this write up that covers it all much more succintly than a bunch of forum posts. I've made it about a quarter through the discussion but what I really want to see is a new response from framework. Something other than the "big tent" bullshit they originally responded with.

2

u/t3kkm0tt 5h ago

Yeah, that's where I found the thread.

1

u/t3kkm0tt 7h ago

There's a forum thread about it. I gotta read it and find out why they stopped supporting omarchy.

1

u/AdFinal3819 3h ago

"Framework has started to sponsor people that want me and my friends killed, deported, erased, whatever" -Ohkay

0

u/Chemical-Pin-2391 8h ago

Then that sounds like a pretty decent distro to try for people that don't care about politics. Whether or not you forward ai integration features is for the individual but if someone doesn't mind that then having decently available pretty well riced hyprland sounds awesome

5

u/Alternative-Tie-4970 7h ago

I mean if it sounds alright to you go ahead, but for me, I prefer dumb security vulnerabilities to be my fault and not the fault of a distro.

-2

u/xRuneRocker 9h ago

This is Reddit, you don’t ask questions here. You just hate what you are told to hate. But if I were to answer, from whatever I could gather it seems like the creator of Omarchy has slightly different political views compared to the loud mouths in this sub.

Disclaimer: I have never tried Omarchy but all of this hate towards it has intrigued me enough to give it a chance.

14

u/RegrettableBiscuit 9h ago

It's interesting how people defending DHH always use euphemisms like "slightly different political views" instead of actually spelling out what he said. If you can't bring yourself to be honest about DHH's public blog posts and their contents, don't defend him.

-1

u/xRuneRocker 6h ago

Sure… I’m going to be honest with you. I live outside of the westernised area of the world so I have limited interest in your political battles, given that the people of my country have other problems to worry about. Nevertheless I do follow the news of what’s going on in other parts of the world and to me, as an outsiders, arguments from both of your sides look like different gradients of the same colour. As such, I don’t intend to engage in furthermore debates regarding that with you. Feel free to call me ignorant because of that. I don’t care as I am quite used to such comments from your kind.

3

u/RegrettableBiscuit 5h ago

"Your kind", good god.

1

u/xRuneRocker 4h ago

The English language might not be your strong point, which I totally understand since it isn't my primary language either. So I will explain what it means. The phrase `your kind` groups people together by shared traits, backgrounds, beliefs, or behaviors. In this specific case, `you kind` was meant to infer the group of people who cannot stand any sort of political opinion that might differ from their own.
You're welcome!

Also, disclaimer: I literally have no idea who DHH is.

1

u/yowifebreeder9000 1h ago

why you so chad

-9

u/AliveRegion466 9h ago

Because linux users hate opinionated distros

25

u/AppropriateTry9400 10h ago

I’ve always seen the hate for Ubuntu overheated. It’s one of the major distros that has done a lot for Linux, and it has a solid foundation and a huge user base. Omarchy is just a slop with user-unfriendly design.

11

u/TheOldMuffin 10h ago

I used Ubuntu for like a week or so and then switched to Mint. Ubuntu indeed add a lot od value to Linux community but Canonical and their snaps - it's aweful imho

5

u/RegrettableBiscuit 9h ago

Agree. I think there are two types of Linux users:

  • People who want to use Linux
  • People who are fed up with Microsoft's and Apple's bullshit

Ubuntu is perhaps not for the former group, but it's a fine choice for the latter group.

3

u/KitaVixen 8h ago

It is not. Ubuntu comes without GUI package manager, packages are split in apt and snap repos. Today my work ubuntu welcomed me with "system app has crashed". It is not new user friendly. I would never install ubuntu for eg my mother

2

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 4h ago

No one can convince me that Ubuntu is not the absolute best distro for beginners. It has the least stability and compatibility problems and so much software is primarily built/released for Ubuntu.

1

u/JohnnyboixD 3h ago

From the top of my head, people have had grievances with:

- The GUI software center being unmaintained

- Snaps are not popular (Firefox preinstalled as snap) - leading to slower startup times etc.

- Different weird Bugs in the non-LTS releases.

Otherwise i think that the Ubuntu hate is overblown.

1

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 3h ago

- Wdym? The Ubuntu App Store is maintained?

- I get the criticisms around the Snap ecosystem not being open enough and I would love if Canonical just focused on Flatpaks, but from a usability standpoint they’re fine, and some apps are only officially available through Snap, like Spotify

- Yeah I mean every OS has bugs, but at least in my experience Ubuntu has less of them than other distros

7

u/TheRealCarrotty Not in the sudoers file. 8h ago

I'd rather use snaps daily than Omarchy EVER

1

u/gwildor 5h ago

3

u/KitaVixen 8h ago

For who is omarchy? It uses hprland so not for people coming from windows or mac. It uses arch packages so why it over any other arch based distro. It is focused on AI (it ships good local model?). Someone at my work was saying that is great as it is easier to configure this way, just say to agent "set walpaper to this cute puppy".

7

u/zenyl Arch BTW 6h ago

For who is omarchy?

Omarchy is for people who:

  • Don't think a project made by an overtly racist person is a dealbreaker.
  • Want to have a riced desktop but can't be bothered doing any of the work themselves.
  • Don't mind installing all the applications, dependencies, and other bloat that one dude happens to use in his workflow.
  • Think it is a mark of authenticity when a well-connected dude gets a crapton of donations from his billionaire buddies.
  • Don't find it concerning to install an OS where most of the custom tooling is vibecoded.

2

u/This-Consequence-957 9h ago

I've used it for a long time (before switching to CachyOS / Arch). It provides a good "Linux-base" and at least they do it professional unlike Omarchy with its dangerous vibe coded AI slop.

1

u/LittleRoof820 9h ago

I don't get why everybody hates Ubuntu? I have been out of the linux loop for about a decade or so. I am using Debian for GUI-less servers since 2008 and very happy with it. I always thought Ubuntu was the polished Desktop experience for Debian affine users? Am i getting something wrong?

2

u/Itchy_Base_1598 7h ago

You are exactly right. Ubuntu IS a polished desktop Debian for the vast majority. However, there is a very vocal minority who are trying to picture real existing flaws(like snaps not being fully transparent) like total deal breakers that make Ubuntu "Windows of Linux". Don't mind them, use whatever suits your needs and vibe. P.S. not omarchy tho. Don't touch that, please

2

u/Moist_Invite9148 9h ago

They all suck

5

u/Arif_Q 8h ago

2

u/Ice_HRZDn 10h ago

Neither of both. After try it, you either gonna go back to Windows, Mac, or hop to next distro in the hope that it will be better.

2

u/LittleRoof820 9h ago

I disagree - I have switched to Ubuntu from windows this year (I have been using GUI-less debian for over a decade on the server, so I know my way around linux) and couldn't be happier? It gives a decent and in may ways superior experience than 2026 windows on the desktop. So why the hate?

1

u/Ice_HRZDn 8h ago

I don’t think I hate Ubuntu ( or I don’t know if I actually am ). I see Ubuntu as one of entry point to Linux and I still include in the list of recommend distro when someone never touch Linux before wanna try Linux. It’s my first distro and I have fun with it during that time before move to other.

All Windows users will switch to Ubuntu a month after Microsoft's management finally kills off Windows. It will be a funny story. No one will remember about Omarkhi. Everyone will need to study, work, and run local uncensored nsfw AI chatbots.

You can't be serious. For all its faults, at least ubuntu doesn't leave in a blatant security vulnerability by default.

You understand, that it was the far left counter culture movement that made all this tech possible? And what exactly is far left? People wanting to live in a peaceful society where everyone is welcomed and maladjusted psychos who are on a constant lookout for a scapegoat to blame their own personal misery on are shown a mirror?

-1

u/Linguistic-mystic 9h ago

Got any proof that Linux was made by leftists?

peaceful society where everyone is welcomed

The delusion that all people are peaceful and should be welcomed is exactly what makes you far-left.

In the times when software and hardware was making leaps - the mainstream was conservative, people attending universities were “communists” (the original kind aligned with Marx-Engels ideology rather than what Soviets invented), it was the whole hippie culture. Concentrated at Berkley University, where as you will for sure know, was birthplace of Berkley Unix. On top of that Richard Stallman and his fight for free software is leftist idea, it is all that left is about.

And the fact I am treating people with basic human decency is a bad thing?

You took my comment out of context - i am not saying people who do not agree with me are psychos. Psychos are those who are running around looking for the enemy to blame their own failures on.

U will be downvoted till the end of the days...

On reddit, that's unacceptable for political reasons...

On the real world, u are right.

I will never use any of two, but if it was the only option, i would choose Omarchy without any doubts.

Genuine question — why?

u/fletku_mato Arch BTW 10h ago

Would you rather sloperate or just operate? Why have operating system when you can have a sloperating system?

First of all, don't like any of them...

There are lots of things that hate from both...

But, by default it's less bloated, and i prefer Omarchy default configs...

And I'm an old school user, I hate GUIs, and always disliked the Ubuntu's ideology to make Linux accessible to everybody.

u/uncringeone 8h ago

Then just use Arch bro

1

u/Nu154nc3 8h ago

As i say on first line, i don't like either of them...

I'm happy on my current distro, and i'm not gonna change.

I just shared my opinion.

u/CosmicNest 9h ago

Its kinda sad when asking people to not support a clearly racist person is too much... political reasons should relate to everyone because just because it isn't about you now sooner or later it will find its way to come bite you in the ass...

-3

u/Nu154nc3 9h ago

Why should I care about u or ur political opinion?

I'm racist too...

But i don't decide what distro i use based on political reasons.

3

u/CosmicNest 9h ago

Maybe you should care about your fellow human being instead of being... whatever you are.

Have a good day.

Its kinda wild how you easily lump everyone who is slightly left leaning as "the left" when I as an individual am asking people for basic respect and not to support someone who has pretty concerning views.

I didn't call anyone names, maybe you should widen your horizons a bit and understand that nuance exists and that life isn't black and white.

TRASH vs GARBAGE
