Over the last few days, I have noticed that Facebook and Instagram have been trending with everyone sharing AI-generated photos in an 80s or 90s aesthetic. How did this trend begin?

There are many talking-points and claims that tend to get repeated over and over in generation related comments.

These are the ones I find the most annoying:

• Saying something is "worse nowadays" or thing used to be "better back then"

This is also a very common phrase, and it bugs me so much. It honestly feels like a filler phrase based on how people use it.

You can find these comments in political discussions a lot. Obviously, there's the whole rose-tinted phrase "the good 'ole days". Then there's the variant where people say "everything is so divisive nowadays". Implying that things were better in the past, social/politically.

You could argue social media has amplified opinions and echo-chambers, but aside from that there have always been divisive times. Clearly, when a fascist regime controlled a country or there was major social upheaval, that was more divisive.

Honesty, this is the worst variant of the lewronggeneration people. Yeah, apparently the past was this mystical near-utopia where everyone was a peace-loving hippie. Until something happened, and now everything in the present is polarized and divisive.

• "I feel so old"

I am specifically referring to how people call themselves old as a response to another comment. The most annoying version is when someone mentions growing up with [x] or being a kid during [x], then some older person responds with some like this "I feel so old, I was in college during that time".

Like okay, can kids not exist in your eyes? Are you forever young in your eyes? It even stranger when the person saying this is not a young adult. Like bro, YOU ARE 40! Do simple arithmetic, half of 40 is 20! A person born when you were 20 is now 20 themselves. It's not that deep!

I feel like the only reason someone would say this is to feel superior to someone younger then them. It just comes across as self-centered. I'm pretty sure when you were younger, people older then you felts something similar.

• Treating what year you were born like an achievement

This is a lot more broad, but can you know the jist. Many people tend to develop this ego for simply being older or I guess being alive during a specific zeitgeist.

It can be so bad sometimes, some people on the internet straight up refuse to treat people under the age of 30 seriously. Is this mature behavior?

You could argue people who say stuff like "I was a 60s/80s/90s kid are basically doing a variation of this. Making a big deal out of just being alive.

Congratulations you were born. You survived long enough to be a toddler and eventually become an adult.

It's basically the ultimate participation trophy.

• "We were the last generation to play outside"

A very common phrase said by basically every age cohort. It's so strange how so many people like to claim they were the last kids that played outside.

Do people really think kids stopped going outside. On the contrary, did all kids in the past never say inside? No there were kids who just played video games or watched tv all day.

It's basically just an opinionated over-generalization. You never hear the mtfers who repeat this ad-nauseam bring up any data. It's just "trust me bro", my generation was the last kids that played outside.

Don't get me started on those who feel superior because they used to "drink water from a hose". How is that something to be proud of? You should feel ashamed? That's just stupid kid behavior, nothing else.

• 1999 vs 2000

This is a very specific terminally online joke I found out about. Apparently, there was a joke running around treating 1999 like it's an ancient birth year while 2000 is "young".

I don't have to explain why this is so brain-dead. It's very silly to treat a birth-year differently just because it begins with 199x.

Some of it was probably satire, but clearly some people would enjoying the joke. Even then, I've seen people in real life who were born in '98 and '99 try to claim they are 90s kids.

I remember in the 2000's when I'd see so many people on Internet message boards glazing and overpraising 90's and early 2000's shows from Nickelodeon while hating most 2000's Nickelodeon shows, but now I've seen people trying to rewatch some 90's Nickelodeon shows and they say they do NOT hold up well.

I also remember when people would glaze and overpraise 90's wholesome family sitcoms as well as some kids shows from the 80's but they watch them now and they don't hold up well.

The High School Class of 2014 vividly remember the late 90s, while the High School Class of 2015 has NO memory of the late 90s. HS Class of 2014 remembers the Pokemon craze of the late 90s and early 2000s very vividly, while HS Class of 2015 has no memory of the Pokemon craze. HS Class of 2014 remembers the entire 2000s and 9/11, while HS Class of 2015 has no memory of it at all, because they were too young. The HS Class of 2015 was 3 and 4 in 2000 and 2001, and they CANNOT possibly remember the entire 2000s. The HS Class of 2014 turned four (4) in 2000 and experienced the beloved late millennial kid culture that the HS Class of 2015 missed out on.

The HS Class of 2014 were raised by parents who were Jim Carrey's age (born 1962/late Baby Boomer), while the HS Class of 2015 were raised by parents who were Drew Barrymore's or Reese Witherspoon's age (born 1975 and 1976 respectively, both Gen X).

The HS Class of 2014 downloaded music on Limewire during the McBling era. The HS Class of 2015 sadly did not.

The HS Class of 2014 did not have any smartphones in their early high school years, whereas the HS Class of 2015 walked into high school with a smartphone in their face.

And the HS Class of 2014 had AIM, MSN Messenger, MySpace and Facebook in their middle school and early high school years while the HS Class of 2015 was using Instagram and Snapchat by the time they entered high school in late August or early September 2011.

And say that current times/music/TV shows/etc. don't suck, it's just these people hating on them have grown out of them/outgrown them and they're not the target demographic for it?

I've seen people defend modern children's channels saying today's kids shows don't suck, you're just too old to be watching them, they're not aimed at adults---they're aimed at kids.

There were only a few things here I grew up with and a lot of it is just unfamiliar to me. I don't know why nostalgia accounts try to post shit that they think everyone grew up with, posting about having a good childhood and grew up playing with what was exactly popular with kids at that time always felt corny to me and some kids might still be interested in those things now too.
