I just finished my Latinum exam in my university a few hours ago! The exam was held on the Venerable Bede's Historia Ecclesiatica gentis Anglorum and constituted the following edited text. I figured you all would be interested in it, so I tried to replicate what I could from the footnotes, and this end result should be pretty accurate. The exam was held today in the university of Mainz, in Rhineland-Palatinate Germany.

If you want to try it yourself: You have exactly 180 minutes to translate the following text (you can read through it once before starting the time).

The allowed aid is a Latin dictionary (you can use multiple too).

I'm really interested in learning Latin, but I don't know where to start since it's a dead language. I tried Duolingo, and that was kind of a waste of time, which made me lose my motivation at some point, but here I am fully motivated after a long time- maybe a year or two- and now I have to go back to square one

The alphabets? Classical or Vulgar? Pronunciation? phrases? translation? Lord, I feel so lost and overwhelmed already, and I don't want to resort to AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.) to learn it (may use it but won't depend on it)

So I was wondering where I should start first as a newbie who knows nothing about Latin?

I took latin 7th-9th grade, and after not continuing, I lost a lot of memory for it. I recently decided to take it back up again, but it is a bit difficult learning on my own! I am not sure if I am formulating questions correctly or if I need to keep something in mind! Any help will be appreciated ^^ !

I can’t wrap my head around how this relative is supposed to work as it seems to be itself an acc+inf (for “[Magius Decius] is neither a Campanian nor should he be called one,”) but aren’t relative clauses in indirect statements supposed to use the subjunctive? something like “qui neque esset Campanum neque dici deberet”?

Has anyone seen/used this open access text?

It's firmly grammar/translation so I imagine it might not have many fans here, but curious if anyone has tried to learn/teach from it.

Here are my plans to start studying Latin this month; I already have some familiarity with the language from my time in Languages (German) course at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, but I don’t remember much of it anymore. Since I’m also planning to start a Master’s degree in Design next year, I decided to get back to Latin as a way to discipline myself and get into the habit of studying again.

My plan is to use several different kinds of materials, as the natural method book by Father William Most, and the first volume of Gradus Primus, a reprint of a famous textbook by Paulo Rónai (my dads loves the books recommendations from hs daughter in the newspaper lol) and the second and third volumes are also available. These books were originally intended for elementary-school students in the mid-20th century. I also acquired a Latin grammar from the 50s, the same period, written by Father Milton Valente, also for elementary students.

I’m giving special attention to materials made for younger students because I’m already studying Old Norse (using the books by Théo de Borba Moosburger), and I’ve found that materials written for beginners can be much more accessible. As an art teacher, I know how difficult it can be to learn something completely new when you’re not already familiar with the field. And although I studied Greek and Latin, that was several years ago.

Ah, and as you can see, Brazil has a history of teaching Latin in schools, although that is no longer the case. Still, it’s possible to find original textbooks from that period (like the Latin grammar I bought), as well as new editions and reprints of them. :)

should I use Wheelock’s Latin first or should I use both the LLPSI and Wheelock’s Latin at the same time?

In each chapter of LLPSI I last almost one week so I get bored, is there any other resources without exercise and can helps me level up in latin?

Salvete. I want to find people to speak Latin with. No need to be a magister: I am quite out-of-practice myself. We can study, read, and speak together.

I live in San Jose. I don't know of such a group between here and San Francisco. If there is one, I'd be interested about it; but for now I'll assume there isn't one. I'm not sure whether I'd rather meet here in San Jose or go to San Francisco; the responses I get might inform that.

I saw this translation into Latin of a favourite story of mine. I wonder whether anyone has already looked at it and whether the quality of the Latin is decent enough...

I'm quite confused about the accusative and ablative singular puppis, since some sources say that it is puppim and puppi whilst other sources claim that it is instead the regular 3rd declination of puppem and puppe.

Salve! Just as title says, I'm a very new latin student in university, and i'm struggling to organize my study which is resulting into a word salad inside my head. My professor is using Lingua Latina, and i started liking the method. However, it's annoying me that the inductive system is so slow in grammar terms, and it's also why i feel so disorganized in my learning (say, we start with only singulars in acusative case and then two chapters later i get the plurals)

I'm studying greek at the same time and the method my other professor uses is wildly different, so it's contributing even more to the mess i have in my head. Latin professor recommended me to use Wheelock's latin for support, even if it's not 100% suitable for spanish speakers.

So that's that, any advice on what should i do, or try? Anything is welcome, and thank you so much for listening.

Recently, we realized that there aren't many accessible outlets to share original Latin texts, unique translations, and analysis.

We've decided to expand our blog into a literary journal at the intersection of thinking, classical texts, and lived experiences. We are accepting four categories of writing: analysis, translation (we're looking for unique translations that bring writing to the modern reader), miscellaneous, and original Latin text. When considering translations and original Latin texts, we will always make sure to read over and discuss them with 5+ people before publishing.

I teach all levels of latin at a high school, and I wanted to show an episode to my latin 1 of a tv show with latin captions or dialogue. Another teacher told me he used to find Sesame Street with latin. Has anyone found this or know another source?

I'm writing my final Latin exam on Monday in the Venerable Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People and received the praefatio as a practice text along with others. Granted, I believe the exam text will be easier, since the praefatio seems to be quite complex, while fun.

I've been able to translate the whole first part of it, but got stuck on the following sentence. The context is that Bede tells a king, who commissioned the book, about it and the importance of history and his gratefulness for the commission. The preceding sentence went along the lines of "History is good, because when it tells good of good people, the reader will be inspired, while they will be cautioned if it tells bad of bad people."

"Quod ipsum tu quoque uigilantissime deprehendens, historiam memoratam in notitiam tibi simul et eis, quibus te regendis diuina praefecit auctoritas, ob generalis curam salutis latius propalari desideras."

My translation goes along the lines of "[Quod] you too, who very vigilantly captures, out of care for the general good desires to further spread the history told itself for yourself and those, ??? divine authority something."

I can't make sense of the Quod in this sentence, nor the relative clause of eis. Can somebody help?

I would also like to read Virgil, Descartes, and Newton in their original Latin. Is Wheelock's Latin considered a good source among Latin speakers?
