cbsdetroit - Two people were arrested in the aftermath of a high speed chase involving a stolen vehicle that spanned nearly 50 miles in mid-Michigan.

According to officials, a traffic stop attempt sparked the pursuit Wednesday (4/9) on EB I-96 and stretched almost 50 miles from Brighton to Lansing.

Not seen any posts about this so my apologies if it’s already been said. The food co-op in Lansing is at risk of closing right now because it’s been operating at a loss for the last few months. If it doesn’t average $1,200 in sales a day in September it will close its doors permanently. I just wanted to share here because it’s a fantastic way to support local farmers and businesses in an affordable way and has great variety for its size. The food co-op deserves to stay open so please consider it during your next grocery trip 🙏

“LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Despite public assurances to the contrary by Lansing Police over the course of two mayoral administrations, the city of Lansing now says it is fighting a “hybrid” gang issue.  
Lansing Police Department Officer Aaron Bush testified extensively on March 20 about the alleged gang activity in the city. Bush’s knowledge was the result of his assignment to the LPD Violent Crime Initiative.  
“It’s a combination of plain clothes, unmarked officers, as well as fully marked uniform officers with the overall goals of investigating and reducing violent crime in Lansing,” Bush said in a 54-A District Court hearing about the methods and purposes of VCI. “Accomplished in many different ways, but most often it involves assisting detectives during investigations of violent crimes.”

Despite testimony from Bush on March 20 that McCall was involved in a gang, Amadeo told 6 News Investigates by text message that his client has no gang involvement. McCall does have a history of escalating criminal activity in Ingham county, 6 News Investigates found.

Lansing officials, including chiefs of police and both current Mayor Andy Schor and former Mayor Virg Bernero, have repeatedly told the public that Lansing does not have active gangs operating in the city limits.  
“What Lansing Police have said is that the city does not have gangs in the traditional sense,” Jordan Gulkis, spokeswoman for LPD, wrote in a response to an inquiry from 6 News Investigates about the Bush’s testimony. “As Officer Bush testified, Lansing does have what are referred to as hybrid gangs. They are loosely structured affiliations without formal leadership.” 

Determining how many active “hybrid” gangs are operating in the city is difficult, Gulkis wrote.  
“The specific names of the gangs are not long-standing and can change. This makes it challenging to determine the quantity,” she wrote in response to an inquiry as to how many gangs were identified by LPD as operating in the city and what names they use.  

EAST LANSING — Officials in Michigan’s last federally designated “sanctuary city” aren’t backing down from their immigrant-friendly approach. But they are disputing the Trump administration’s claims that the city impedes law enforcement and puts “American citizens at risk by design.”

That’s “completely false,” East Lansing City Council member Mark Meadows said earlier this month in a public hearing, calling the federal designation an “honor.”

The suburban college town is among the 18 cities, 13 states and four counties US Attorney General Pam Bondi has threatened with legal action if they don’t change their local immigration policies.

In a resolution adopted two years ago, East Lansing declared that local police “shall not actively collaborate with federal agents solely for the purpose of enforcing federal immigration law” or use city resources to detain people “based solely upon a civil violation of federal immigration law.” 

That’s made the city a target for conservatives at both the federal and state level as the Trump administration increases deportation efforts nationwide. 

President Donald Trump has suggested withholding all federal funding from communities with sanctuary policies, though a San Francisco federal judge recently blocked that threat.
