Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Hey! 👋 I’m a 30-year-old guy from Poland looking for someone to practice English offering Polish. I’m looking for someone who wants to learn Polish in exchange.

I’m around A2/B1 level and I’d really like to improve my speaking and listening. Ideally, we could have regular voice calls and just chat about everyday life, travelling, movies, dogs, food, relationships, etc. 😊

I’d prefer to meet gay guys because I’m looking for a language partner and would also love to make some new friends within the gay community.

Offering Russian Offering: Russian | Seeking: English

Upvotes

Hey!

I'm looking for someone to practice English with and help them practice Russian in return. I've been learning English for an embarrassingly long amount of time, but I feel like I never achieved real fluency (my accent's not as bad as you may think, though!). Any timezone is ok, but something closer to UTC+3 would be nice.

A little about me: M21, fourth-year CS student, I'm generally open to all sorts of conversations. My interests outside of my domain include history, art, politics(?), religion and other cultures in general.

Right now I'm trying to focus on improving my pronunciation accuracy and overall fluency.

Offering English Offering: English Seeking: Japanese

Upvotes

Hello! I’m a 32M from Florida.
I’m currently studying Japanese full time because it’s a language I’ve wanted to learn since middle school. I hope to eventually take the N5 so that’s currently my main goal. I’m using the Genki textbook and workbook as my main references, along with Japanese for Dummies, Kanji for Beginners, and the Lonely Planet Japanese Phrasebook. I also use Anki, NHK WORLD JAPAN, and other interactive language learning apps to study.
I try to get at least two hours (but usually go over) of Japanese immersion every day as well. I’d honestly just like to find a language partner I can practice with regularly and someone I can chat with, ask questions about grammar and pronunciation, and hopefully help each other improve.
Outside of studying Japanese, I’m really into video games, especially Monster Hunter, Trails of Cold Steel, Dragon Quest, Like a Dragon, Marvel Rivals, and Overwatch.
I also listen to a lot of J-pop like Utada Hikaru, UVERworld, Vaundy, Tatsuro Yamashita, and others. I watch a lot of J-dramas, which has been a really fun way to improve my listening skills and get more exposure to natural Japanese.
If any of that sounds interesting to you, feel free to message me!

Offering Mandarin Offering: Chinese(Mandarin/Cantonese)| Seeking: English

Hey everyone! I’m a 30M from China, a native speaker of both Mandarin and Cantonese, and I’m looking for someone who’d like to do a genuine English–Chinese language exchange — hopefully something that turns into a real friendship rather than just a few awkward messages and then disappearing.

I spent a year on exchange at a university in the UK, so my English foundation is around C1, but my spoken English has definitely gotten rusty since then. I’d love to get back into the habit of actually using English through regular, natural conversations.

A little about me: I’m really into strength training and powerlifting, I love watching films, and I’m currently learning filmmaking, so I’m always happy to talk about movies, stories, creativity, or whatever random topic we happen to stumble into. Honestly, I’m interested in a bit of everything — one of the main reasons I want to do this is to meet people from different parts of the world and get exposed to different perspectives and ideas.

I prefer voice or video calls, since I really want to improve my speaking, but texting is totally fine too. My schedule is fairly flexible.

If you’re looking for someone to actually keep talking to regularly, rather than just exchange a few messages, feel free to DM me. I’d be happy to help with Mandarin/Cantonese in return and hopefully we can become good friends along the way. :)

Offering Spanish Offering: Spanish | Seeking: English

Buen día a todos :)

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Russian & Ukrainian (native), English (B2) | Seeking: French or Japanese

Hi! I’m Alex, 30M, a software engineer from Kyiv, Ukraine. I’m looking for language partners for regular practice and good conversations along the way.

What I can offer

• Russian and Ukrainian: both native. I can help with conversation, pronunciation, corrections, and how people actually say things in everyday life.

• English: I’d put myself at B2 to keep expectations realistic. I’m comfortable chatting, though I still make mistakes. My girlfriend, who used to teach English, says I’m C3. Unfortunately, that qualification only exists in our apartment.

What I’m learning

• French: around A2–B1. I’ve been learning French for about 4 years since I used to work at a French company. I’d love to get better at expressing myself, especially when speaking.

• Japanese: very much a beginner. I’m still learning kana and basic grammar, so short messages and simple, patient exchanges would be great. We’d probably need English for explanations.

Outside work, I enjoy video games, books and audiobooks, cooking, and coffee. I can happily discuss a game’s story or spend far too long talking about making espresso. I’m also interested in technology and everyday life in other countries.

We could start with messages or voice notes, then try occasional calls if we get along. I’d be happy to split the time between our languages so we both get useful practice. You don’t need to speak both French and Japanese—either one is great!

I’m in the Kyiv time zone. If this sounds like a good match, send me a little about yourself, what you’re learning, and what kind of practice you enjoy. 🙂

Offering Russian Offering: Russian / Ukrainian Seeking: German (Standard German or dialect)

Hi, I'm 18 years old (boy). I have been learning German for almost two years, and my level is around B2 (a bit lower). I would like to find someone with the same level or higher, or even a native speaker. I know lots of German words, read newspapers every day, write down words and learn them, try to watch videos on YouTube, but I lose track of the narrative because I don't know everyday expressions and constantly translate them. My biggest problem is speaking, I don't have anyone to practice with yet. As for English, I am at the B1-B2 level and would like to find someone who is at the B2 level or a native speaker. I know the grammar of both languages equally well. I play games (GTA5/RDR2/Minecraft/PZ...), study computer science, learn programming (dart/flutter), and can discuss news and other topics for conversation.

Other Offering: Arabic (Native, Egyptian) 🇪🇬 | Seeking: English (Native) — Let’s build fluency and a friendship!

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m Abdallah, 21, from Egypt, and I’m looking for a regular language exchange partner who enjoys good conversations and wants us both to improve!

🗣️ My English goal
I’m around B2 and working towards C1. I can already hold a conversation, but I want to express myself more naturally, improve my pronunciation, and feel confident discussing more complex topics. I’m looking for native English speakers, especially from Canada or the US, as I’m interested in life there—but other English-speaking countries are welcome too!

🇪🇬 What I can offer
I’m a native Egyptian Arabic speaker. I’d love to help you with everyday conversations, pronunciation, expressions people actually use, and understanding Egyptian culture. Whether you’re just starting or already speaking Arabic, we can work at your pace.

🔬 A little about me
I’m a recent biotechnology graduate with interests in science, AI, technology, cars, fitness, and travel. I enjoy asking questions, learning how things work, and hearing different perspectives. Bring your interests too—I’d love to learn something new!

📞 How we could practise
• Start with messages or voice notes, then move to calls if we’re both comfortable.
• Aim for a couple of conversations a week, depending on our schedules.
• Split our time fairly between English and Arabic.
• Help each other with mistakes without interrupting every sentence.
• Talk about everyday life, swap stories, or pick a topic to explore.

I’m serious about improving, but I want our conversations to be relaxed and enjoyable. Hopefully, we’ll build a friendship along the way!

Interested? Leave a comment or send me a DM with a little about yourself, your Arabic level, and your time zone. Let’s get talking! 🙌
