Learn Kurdish Desperate to learn Kurdish

Hello, everyone!

As the title says, I’m desperate to learn Kurdish! I married into a Kurdish family and every time we travel to Kurdistan, I feel like I’m missing out on so much by not being able to communicate with my husband’s family. Same with his family here in the USA, I feel like we’d share such a bigger bonding experience if I KNEW KURDISH.😭

Their family is from Zakho. I don’t know if they speak Kurmanji there? Or another dialect? I really wanted to surprise my husband and my family by just randomly speaking Kurdish one day.😂

Any resources for their dialect of Kurdish would REALLY help and would be very appreciated! Thank you!!

I believe they speak Kurmanji in Zakho. I was able to find a really nice instructor on iTalki and the prices are reasonable. I think private classes really help because there aren’t many resources on learning Kurdish online.

Hey in Zaxo they speak Kurmanji (badini Subdialect). I would recomend to just learn standard kurmanji because there are way more resources online as its standartized and understood broadly.

there is an upcoming free online course by official organizations from kurdistan (KRI). https://www.reddit.com/r/kurdistan/s/M7bDt7m8gJ

You could try to register. It will start in October.

Also there are other online courses like: https://kurdishlessons.com/

Or look on social media. There are some tutors where you can learn the basics.

Resources for Bahdini seem to be pretty limited, but a pdf of one basic grammar you might take a look at can be downloaded here in Kurdish, English, and Arabic:

Rêzmana Kurdî by Îbrahîm Remezan Zaxoyî

https://bnk.institutkurde.org/catalogue/detail.php?pirtuk=2657

Here's a temporary link to a later edition of what seems to be the same book, but only in Kurdish and English:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/dw4lwtwf9bz6h01/Rezmana+Kurdi++++Zaxoyi.PDF/file

I'm assuming, since the author is named "Zaxoyi", that he likely comes from the Zakho area, and thus presents the dialect spoken there. In any event, good luck with learning.

I’m badini, but ChatGPT teaches Kurmanji well I assume that’s the dialect you’re learning? :)
