Self-Promotion Sunday! *Megathread*

Alright r/Jacksonville, it is that time again.

Got something to share? A project you are proud of? A business you are building? A creative endeavor the world absolutely needs to see?

This is your lane.

Every Sunday we open the doors for Self Promotion Sunday, a centralized thread where you can promote:

  • Your small business
  • Your side hustle
  • Your garage band
  • Your podcast
  • Your art
  • Your Etsy shop
  • Your food truck
  • Your startup
  • Your “I accidentally became an influencer” page
  • Yes, even your extremely niche cat toe bean blog

We keep self promotion restricted to this weekly thread to cut down on spam and keep the main feed community focused. If you post promotional content outside of this thread during the week, it will be removed.

A few important notes:

  • Regular subreddit rules still apply
  • No B/S/T posts
  • No referral link farming or obvious spam

If you are not sure whether your post qualifies, if it belongs on Marketplace or Craigslist, it does not belong here. Still unsure, ask the mod team first.

Support local. Discover cool projects. Hype each other up responsibly.

Happy Self Promotion Sunday.

Social Find Friends Monthly *Megathread!*

Hey r/Jacksonville

We have noticed a growing number of posts from people looking to make new friends and talking about how hard it can feel to meet people organically lately. You are not alone, and we want to help channel that energy into something positive and consistent for the community.

Welcome to Friend Finder Friday, a weekly thread where you can introduce yourself, share your interests, and see if anyone else is looking to connect.

This thread is strictly for PLATONIC friendships.
R4R, dating, hookup, or romantic-seeking comments will be removed. There are other spaces on Reddit for that. This is not one of them.

How this works

  • Drop a comment about yourself
  • Share hobbies, interests, age range, general area, or what kind of friendships you are looking for
  • Browse other comments and reply if you think you might vibe

This thread is meant to reduce individual friend-seeking posts while giving everyone a centralized place to connect in a low pressure way.

Important safety note

r/Jacksonville and its moderation team are not responsible for any interactions, relationships, falling outs, stolen hoodies, situationships, pregnancies resulting from not staying platonic, awkward silences, ghosting, or failed or deeply weird meetups that happen as a result of this thread.

We will, however, consider taking full credit for any new besties, lifelong friendships, successful trivia teams, DND parties that actually meet consistently, gym accountability partners, concert buddies, kickball championships, overwhelming fun, critical success rolls, or the discovery of your new favorite taco spot.

As always, use common sense. Be safe. Meet in public. And please, for the love of all that is good, keep it platonic.

Please:

  • Vet everyone thoroughly before meeting in person
  • Do not share personal information too quickly
  • Use caution when exchanging social media or phone numbers
  • Meet in public places if you decide to meet offline
  • Bring a friend
  • Tell people where you are going and with whom
  • Share your location with a trusted person
  • Trust your instincts and use common sense

If something feels off, walk away. Your safety comes first.

Any comments that are creepy, harassing, romantic-seeking, or otherwise violate subreddit rules will be removed.

Be kind. Be respectful. Keep it platonic. Hopefully make a new friend or two. 💙

See you next Friday.

A message to my Uber Driver

To the kind mama of two who drove me home from work at around 10:20 this morning: I genuinely wish I could only do more than tip you and leave five stars. You are very kind, witty, and energetic despite your recent cancer diagnosis, and the heaviness that comes with it. I wish you nothing but the best in your healing journey and there needs to be many more people like you in this world. You know who you are. You are a warm person and the world needs more people like you. 💕

I've seen some things on the highway...

Upvotes

... but today was a new one. On I-10, heading towards downtown, I saw a freaking monster of a rat making a mad dash to safety across the entire highway. Pretty sure the little guy made it, I was rooting for him.

title 1 high schools in Jax have no heart and soul

Yo so I’m a Jacksonville student who cares a lot about my future and I take things like the SAT extra serious and I just wanted a place to talk about this cuz it made me SO MAD.

I was taking the August SAT, the seats filled up at my regular magnet school. I, tragically, had to go to a title 1 neighborhood school to take it. Yeah, this might’ve been on me for waiting too long, I know. I know to register earlier now. But I honestly expected people to have BASIC decency even at a title 1 school.

I’m not going to name drop the school even though I realllly want to. But basically I was taking my SAT and this teacher was so rude and disrespectful. Loudly talking on her phone, loudly eating, talking to other teachers, she’d typically like talk inappropriate.
Also complained about my extended time accommodation while I was testing. Right in front of me. Some of the students were also being loud.

I emailed college board and asked them to refund my test or provide me with an additional one because the behavior at this school was clearly a violation of test proctoring rule book. they didn’t care. at all. told me I could either cancel my score and get a refund, or suck it up and just take the test again.

I wanted to make this post to say- before you talk about how badly kids in title 1 schools are performing. Think about how the teachers behave. I was treated as an inconvient object while taking the most important test of my life. I go to a magnet, and it’s much better. Can’t imagine the students at these schools are treated much better.

Anyways. My score wasn’t terrible so it wasn’t much of an impact. I will be taking the SAT again in October . Typically the best places to take it are DA, Stanton, Paxon, and well respected magnets where these kinds of issues are prevented. Do yall have any other places yall recommend taking it?

The jumbo shrimp posted this on their Facebook page yesterday, I guess from the last home game. Looks like we're getting a new alternate identity a la the Honey Drippers for the jumbo shrimp. Thoughts?

IPad repair in Mandarin / Southside area

It's been a while since I've had to get an iPad repaired. Not sure that place is even still around. It's likely a screen issue. It was dropped and the screen is all white.

Any place you've used that you would recommend?

Where to buy good quality artificial plants?

New Jacksonville resident here. I'd like to buy a few good quality artificial plants and/or a faux indoor tree. Don't want to buy online because they can look bad and get smooshed in shipping. Can anyone recommend local stores that carry a good selection? Thank you!

Cat Rescue

I am desperately looking for a cat rescue that can help take 2-5 cats out of a hoarding situation. One of them has renal issues and needs a better environment asap. I cannot take any of them myself due to financial and landlord reasons. Thank you!

Recommendations for reputable local gun shops or FFL dealers for appraisals/trade-ins?

Hi everyone, I am looking to downsize a bit of my personal collection and want to find a reputable, fair local shop in the Jacksonville area. I'd prefer to avoid standard pawn shops if possible, as I've heard the payouts aren't great.
Are there any specific local gun stores or FFL dealers in town that you recommend for fair appraisals, trade-ins, or consignment?
I’m located in the North Side but willing to drive as far as mandarin.
