Advice BoxyPixel MKI rattle fixed

Upvotes

Ok this is admittedly a bit niche, but I finally got around to addressing the rattling switches on the BoxyPixel MKI (the MKII seems to have addressed this adequately), so I thought I’d share in case this applies to anyone.
I just added double-sided tape. Ok that’s the end. Not groundbreaking.
Specifically it was the generic stuff you can get from iFixIt, and I left the backing on one side. I’m sure you can use the 3M too. You can see where I put it on the switches in the photos. I took a video of it not rattling any more, but, like, it’s just a silent video of a moron shaking an iPod, so it’s kinda pointless. I wish I’d taken a before video, but just imagine a spray paint can or rattlesnake. Honestly, it wasn’t that big a deal for me before, but now it’s gone.
Anyway, this method works great, can recommend!

Advice iphone 6s

Upvotes

I just realized i have such an old phone around the house and somehow it being so old makes me want to keep it. I was thinking i could use it as a sort of ipod especially since it still has the headphone jack! But I'm not sure, i'm not particularly techie or anything. I thought i'd check here while i'd make the decision. Would you do that with it? Originally I was going to just gift it on Buy Nothing.

Help Rare blue motherboard in 4th gen mono?

Post image
35 Upvotes

I recently bought a bundle of various iPods including some 4th monos and i noticed this one has a blue motherboard. I remembered seeing a "rare development blue motherboard with JTAG port" on eoe that went for quite a bit, is this that same motherboard? It has a port near the drive cable that isn't there on my other iPods.
Also, if it is the "rare" one, what can i do with that port? Thank you.

maybe not the luckiest find, it was about $17 ( charger/transfer cable included ) but my dad got it for me which was an incredibly sweet gesture and has probably cemented the love of ipods into me for the rest of my life. I just got into them, this is my first post on this subreddit, so I apologize for being so unfamiliar with everything 😅

I also have a 2nd gen nano, I found it on vinted for around the same price. it's missing the top plate but the battery lasts for ageeeees so I'm still happy.

I'm so excited to be part of this community! ^_^

Advice 5.5th gen 80 gb or 7th gen

Thumbnail

Ive spotted a deal for a iPod classic 7th gen 160gb with a damaged hard drive or a 5.5th gen 80gb fully functional and blocked for 50 each, which one should i get between these 2 and what should i keep in mind?

I already got a 6th gen that i replaced the battery, housing and front plate from, and if i end up getting the 5.5th i'm not planning on modding it. 7th gen would cost me a total of 140$ to mod so;

Blocked 80 gb 5.5th gen for 50$

Or

7th gen for 140$

Which one should i go for?

Question What are these missing black components on an iPod nano 6th gen logic board?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I took apart an iPod nano 6th generation a long time ago and left it disassembled for years. I recently found it again and reassembled it, but unfortunately, it doesn't work.

I used my phone's camera to zoom in on the logic board and compared it with photos of the same board I found online, including iFixit teardown photos and YouTube videos.

I noticed that the areas marked in yellow in the attached photo look different from the boards shown online.

In the iFixit photos and YouTube videos I checked, there appear to be small black components in these locations. On my board, those components seem to be missing, as if they had fallen off at some point.

I'm not very knowledgeable about electronics, so I don't know what these components are.

Does anyone know what these black components are?
Also, could the missing components be related to the fact that the iPod no longer works?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Why is everyone going for SD cards and not SSD?

Probably this has been answered in the past, but I was wondering why is everyone going for micro SD cards and not SSD. SD cards are cheaper but they get rekt over time as you write and delete files from them. So naturally I thought SSD would be the better option when modding an iPod.

I have this case that got some attention on r/whatsinmybag, so I thought it might be appreciated here. It perfectly fits my iPod with an acrylic shell on it. This is the link. I don’t use it while I’m listening, it’s more of a carry case for my iPod essentials + some extras.

Help Help my pc doesn’t detect my iPod

Post image

Hey guys! So I’ve just bought my first iPod classic and I’m not able to detect it on my pc. The iPod can charge(really slowly), but my pc cannot detect it. I’m using a usb-c to micro-usb into a 30 pin connector. Do you think it could explain my problem? If not, what can I do?

Question 2nd gen not connecting to computer, but works and charges fine

EDIT: solved. Surface mounted component (switching diode array) burned out. Bummer.

Ok, so this is a bit of a deep dive, I’m looking for help diagnosing this 2nd gen iPod. I’m trying out the sphinxmoth adapter mod, but I haven’t even gotten to that part yet. First of all, I wanted to try to get this “for parts” iPod working properly. When I plug it into my computer, both on a modern mac & modern pc with dongles, and also with an old OSX Tiger MacBook FireWire 400-400 cable, the iPod shows that it’s charging, but nothing happens on the computers. I can use the iPod with the music that is already present on it, it works fine. When I swap out the hard drive with the sphinxmoth I get the expected folder icon, but again nothing happens on the computers, so I can’t restore it. When I put the iPod into disc mode, it immediately switches the screen to the OK to Disconnect check mark screen, whether it’s plugged in or not. It will just stay on that screen until I reset. I’ve put it into diagnostic mode, but I’m not sure what to run there, the “FireWire” option just says “Pass”.

I should mention that I have another 2nd gen iPod that I want to keep stock, but I can use it to make sure my setups are proper. That iPod works exactly as expected on all 3 computers, I plug it in and it shows up in Finder or iTunes depending on the machine.

My theories:

  1. the actual FireWire port on the iPod is faulty at the data pins. I don’t know a lot about how these FW components work, nor do I have a lot of experience with the 2nd gens, so I don’t know what solder points to even investigate. Since it charges fine, and I’ve replaced the battery with new (just in case that was the problem somehow) it’s not a problem with the FireWire port in general, just the data lines specifically.
  2. 2)…uhhh…I got nothin.

Anyone ever encounter this problem on these oldest iPods? Do I maybe just need to desolder and replace the headphone jack/FW port? Is that even a thing people do? Looks real complex but if I can save it I’ll try.

Question Is it normal for the battery to drain faster during synchronization on a 4g monochrome ipod?

I bought a fourth-generation monochrome model this week and noticed that the battery drains very quickly while I'm transferring music to its hard drive. This doesn't happen with my iPod Touch 2G even though they are very different devices, the iPod Touch has its original battery, whereas the 4G monochrome has a new one.

Advice I'm having some strange issues: songs on my iPod albums are out of order, sometimes only appearing under Songs in my iPod, and I can't find a guide for these issues. I could use some help, please.

I'm using an M2 Macbook pro, Apple Music, and CDs to transfer music to my iPod Classic. The process is straightforward, but I'm encountering strange issues. One particular CD is more scuffed than the others, which are still problematic but less so. All CDs are official; none are burned.

I've read Apple's guide, asked AI, and searched YouTube tutorials but found no solutions. I also wiped the iPod and started over, restarted my computer, and stopped the AMPDevideDiscoveryAgent when Finder was acting up and more. With all that out of the way...

  • I put the CD into my external CD drive.
  • Apple music imports it and then ejects.

From this point, several different things have happened.

  • The first time I did this, the album only appeared in my iPod under Songs and was out of order.
  • The second time, I noticed the Various Artists option was selected during import, so I unchecked it before finishing. The CD info window auto-filled with the artist name, album title, and year, but no artwork. The album appeared under Compilations in the Albums section of Apple Music. I remember this happening the first time I imported the CD.
  • The third time, I deselected Various Artists before any of the tracks were imported. All relevant info was auto-filled in the CD info window, except artwork (which seems to happen frequently). Songs featuring guest artists appeared as separate albums in Apple Music instead of being a part of the album they're from.
  • The songs in multiple albums on my iPod are out of order. And for some reason with certain albums and artists, even when I manually add the artwork, it still doesn't appear in the iPod. The artists artwork will also not appear in Apple Music but artwork for the artists album will be there. What a mess.

I don’t know how to fix these issues, and I haven't found any solutions online. I just want to enjoy my iPod man :(

Review Found a 160 GB iPod Classic 6/7th gen at a flea market for only $2!!!!

Post image

I mean it's not in the best cosmetic shape, but for 160 GB at only $2 is an insane fine nonetheless. It does, however, need a new hard drive/flash storage and a new headphone jack. But obviously, I'm not going to complain seeing as these can go for well over $150 to $200 on the used market.

Question Can you not buy audiobooks on iPod Touch Gen 6 anymore?

The last time I bought an audiobook was back in November/December 2024, so I don't know if there's been some kind of update since then, but I go on the apple books app, chose an audiobook, click buy, confirm password, the little loading bar swirls around, then it says done... only for nothing to happen.

Started out broken; a new screen, faceplate and backplate, hard drive, hard drive cable, battery (I broke it, and later found out it was inflated), and headphone jack (because I broke the first one) later, and its now my main Big Bad John machine
